Problem is to get DeMelo signed.

Absolutely not. Real solid bottom pair guy though who is physical and limits dangerous chances.

I think of Turcotte like Kakko in a way….both have been underwhelming in their own way and both teams would only be selling low which doesn’t help
Brannstrom could be interesting but they don’t need give up assets or overpay a bottom pair defenseman when Jones has been fine

Cost and availability
Pierre-Luc DuBois is unavailable for reasons of state and the top 6 is untouchable, but the rest of the forwards including Turcotte should be on the table. That being said, in addition to all the points accurately made by my esteemed friend <a href="/users/PuckLuck_77" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@PuckLuck_77</a>, Turcotte is the forward most likely to turn DuBois back into an actual NHL centerman again, either by playing with him directly or else moving up to LW on Anze Kopitar's line to free up Quinton Byfield or Adrian Kempe to play with PLD. Plus, his cap hit will remain low even though he's coming off his ELC and Los Angeles certainly needs the cap space.
The ideal trade would be Turcotte and our 2024 first for Gabe Perreault, but I don't see you getting gulled into that. We don't need defense prospects (on either side) and your goalie pool doesn't impress. I don't really see a fit here because we need a specific type of young player, not a draft pick or two.

Turcotte is weird. Probably would take a 2nd for the Kings to move, but idek if they do that because to get a young player with his upside isn't easy. Obvioulsy not getting a 1st but I don't see him getting moved

I wouldn't call Kakko a bust yet. Just underachieving for his draft position. There's still time for him to put everything together.

Whats the difference between early Nichushkin and Kakko
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>Kakko is as good defensively, but that's where the similarities end. Nichushkin is a very good, borderline elite, mobility skater whereas Kakko is not and is arguably well below average. Neither are great shooters, but Nichushkin is much better at creating a high volume of shot rates and is a better puck handler and playmaker. Also has better size and is a better puck battler. Kakko isn't going to develop more size and speed at his age. He might refine some of his other offensive skills, but he's a bust so far. 3rd line wingers are a dime a dozen so if that is all he ends up being, that's a bad #2 overall pick.</div></div>
Sounds like you’re comparing Kakko to Nichushkin now rather than his early career where he had equally ugly stats lol
if all Kakko has to do is improve his skating and shooting volume, then he’ll easily become good over time. Players develop their speed all the time lol Laffy looks day and night different compared to last year

Yakapov's Numbers through 4 seasons:
2012–13 Edmonton Oilers NHL 48 17 14 31
2013–14 Edmonton Oilers NHL 63 11 13 24
2014–15 Edmonton Oilers NHL 81 14 19 33
2015–16 Edmonton Oilers NHL 60 8 15 23
Total Points through 4 seasons: 111
Compared to Kakkos:
2019–20 New York Rangers NHL 66 10 13 23
2020–21 New York Rangers NHL 48 9 8 17
2021–22 New York Rangers NHL 43 7 11 18
2022–23 New York Rangers NHL 82 18 22 40
Total Points through 4 seasons: 98
Edit: Lets not forget to mention he has 14 points this year... on pace for his worst season yet</div></div>
This kind of stat watching is part of what makes it so difficult to have a real conversation about Kakko’s contribution at the NHL level. You are comparing him to Yakupov on point production alone when Kakko’s freshman and sophomore seasons were cut short due to Covid, on top of that Yakupov had zero positional awareness and was always chasing the play, whereas Kakko has established himself as being very defensively responsible.
Yakupov’s rookie season was cut short due to the lockout, but he was able to remain conditioned by playing in the KHL.

When Drai asks out
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>Not a knock on you guys. I just find it funny how 1st round picks go from untouchable status to dart throws and back to untouchable all the time on here. Some people just value them as sure thing NHL players in year 1. Those picks would take 3-5 years to bring any real contributions most likely.</div></div>
Top 5 picks typically become NHLers pretty damned fast, 5-12 takes a bit longer, but highly skilled. After about 15 or so, it's middle/bottom 6 upside, and likelihood of being an NHLer, ever, drops from there.
Our position is for a guy like Zegras, a clearly talented top 6 forward already, a collection of middle 6 pieces doesn't replace what he brings, nor does it interest us, because our prospect cupboards are brimming with those kinds of players already.
But yes, I do share your amusement when contenders proclaim their 1st round pick as off limits as if it will help them at all in the next 3-5 years.

THIS. Drury has no reason to give up Kakko for anything less than a massive overpayment. He doesn't cost much and he's a very serviceable NHLer that still has upside-- he's only 23 years old.

I’ve been against all trades of the younger kids, except Kakko who it depends what they get back
I’m still against giving Igor a massive contract that will kill their cap space
But I’m a big fan of KAM and Schneider. Not a big fan of Trouba or anyone else that can’t skate
