<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Because Nylander plays a position where they are at their best much sooner then D men, Pesce and Nylander are incredibly similar in terms of skill and Pesce got 19 points in 60 games, he was injured, he could easily have hit 25 and he's only getting better, and for a product of Auston Matthews, I'd be taking that if I'm Toronto. Pesce is so good and the fact your disrespecting him like this is funny.....</div></div>

I'm not saying he isn't good. He's a fine player. A guy that can pair with Rielly and not be a liability. All great things.

Here is the thing though and its where Carolina fans always get silly, Pesce is a defensive defenceman. They just don't make near as much money as two way players or offensive players. This is a fact in this league. So everyone on here keeps saying defence are worth more than Nylander, and that is true when talking about #1 defenceman. Pesce is not a #1 defenceman, on his team he's 3rd on the depth chart at the highest, some may argue he's also behind Faulk because Faulk plays a 2 way game and puts up points.

This isn't a knock on Pesce, its just the reality of the situation. On top of that, the Canes once again are in need of scoring and they need scoring way more than TO needs defence. Toronto has the 2nd best goal differential in the league and are 4th best in GA/G. They are 2nd in the conference and are doing all of this without Nylander and Matthews. If you look at all the chatter out there and all the potential deals, adding Nylander is the biggest addition anyone is going to make. It should just be TO because too many people out here think they are going to get him for a steal, and after the Hall trade, that isn't going to happen.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ODOG67</b></div><div>I have all kinds of time for intelligent, respectful feedback like this. Well articulated...

Boeser is awesome. But, Price remains not only the best goalie in the game, but among the top 5-7 players, irrespective of position. He'll steal you a round, and will do so for the next 6 years. Wingers won't steal you a series. Horvat-Boeser isn't Toews-Kane. Probably not even Matthews-Nylander. What this trade brings MTL is much needed depth and balance and an even more desperately-needed change of representation in key positions. Patches is a fine player. I dont think he is captain material. MTL needs a major shakeup from the head office to ice level, and you dont get anything close to franchise skill without moving a franchise goalie. Does the move make VAN less potent in the top 6? absolutely, it does, until their young guys like Petersson make the jump. When they do, they'd be perennial contenders with CP31 in goal.</div></div>

Let me preface this by saying, if this happened, I'd be jumping for joy. And Im a Habs fan.

Once again, you are banking on a team that hasn't been good the past little while, to trade its two best players right now who are also young, to set up everything on the back of a player(s) who haven't played an NHL game yet (Pettersson and others) on the whim that the best goalie in the world is still at his best for the next 6 years? It doesn't matter what <em>you</em> think, convincing someone to do what you asking is going to be a tough sell. (That's coming from someone who knows the Habs players well and their abilities)

Hey, anything is possible, I guess. You won't get that benefit on here though. On CF, we deal in absolutes. Because we are professionals....... and Sith lords. :laugh

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NickC1988</b></div><div>Stupid concept that's actually never done. Goalies don't get drafted until late 1st round for a reason. Skaters are more valuable than goaltenders.</div></div>

While there are a number of factors for it, the conclusion is correct. Skaters are more valuable than goaltenders, speaking in general terms related to drafting.

It's far more economical to draft skaters and trade skaters and/or picks for goaltenders once they have established themselves.
You can't develop 10 goaltenders and hope one of them works out, because you only have 4 or 5 positions where they will gain significant development experience and playing time. The other 5 guys are essentially just standing around and taking up space, because they won't become viable without playing time at a higher level of competition.

It's far more difficult to evaluate a goaltender or project their development, so regardless of how well you scout them, the odds of them becoming what you expect are significantly lower. Thusly, the odds of completely blowing a 1st round pick are higher. You don't take risks with 1st round picks. Smart drafting means maximizing your odds of turning your high picks into NHLers.

Spending one 1st round pick on a goaltender that was drafted and developed somewhat already, is the best way to turn a 1st into an NHL starter. Since goaltending positions are limited, potential starters become available fairly regularly.

That said, an elite and established starter is worth more than a skater of similar value.

As for building from the net out, that IS a viable strategy that is used all the time. You just don't start that process by drafting a goaltender in the first round. Once you have acquired a sufficient starter through other means, you can absolutely build outwards from him.
