Trying to make it work
Pay Marner a reasonable salary and it works just fine...
And you can have anywhere from 20-23 players on your active roster

Couturier is a good player on a good contract but I would rather have an elite player who makes more. Marner had 94 points as a 21 year old, It's not crazy to think he might exceed those numbers as he progresses. Couturier is likely as good as he'll ever be.
It's easier to find cap relief than it is to acquire elite level talent

its not going to get ugly They all know where the number is going to be. They are only allowed to be 10% over in the summer and can't put Horton and Clarkson on LTIR until the season starts. Its all to work under the cap situation.
You silly guys still read every Marner post that comes out to the media keeps posting them

Leafs are forced to overpay marner on a bridge deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Laudan</b></div><div>Your crystal ball is broken honey.....</div></div>
Lol you think it will be much different. They don't want to give Marner 4 or 5 years because they can potentially lose Marner in the same period to free agency as Matthews and Nylander (there is always a risk you'll lose them as an UFA). Now they are thinking about 3/6/7 years. Marner's agent reportedly asked for 3x10M. They'll try to sign a 3 year deal so they have all the power. All he has to do after signing 3 years is refusing another extension, file for arbitration and he'll have the UFA status within 5 seasons from now, just as Matthews and Nylander. Which is exactly the situation Marner wants and what Toronto wants to avoid

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sammy1414</b></div><div>Why wouldn't Ottawa accept this trade? they would have a no.1 center for 2 years at 6mil</div></div>
because he actually makes 6m in money, OTT only takes players that make less than their cap hit, OTT is NOT an NHL franchise, they a farm team for the rest of the NHL now.

About $750K in cap space :)

Would be a nice right defence addition for Leafs. The fairness depends upon what is the upside for Bracco which is still a little foggy.

Actually a 4 year deal is worst case scenario. Walks him right to UFA. Will be 2-3 bridge or 6-8 if they can get him long term

Dubas grows a pair and Marner holds out and then re-signs at 9mil in 2020
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BigDog91</b></div><div>Why did jets have to trade trouba for nothing. Why do oilers have to trade jesse puljujärvi. Eric Lindros. A team will not waste a year of player of that caliber when they could get assets for him.</div></div>
This is where the Nylander Dubas assumptions come in. Nylander wanted 8+ on a bridge deal, Dubas wanted 6.6 x 6. They settled on the last day for Dubas' term and 300k more than he wanted. The Jets traded trouba because of their cap crunch, and how he spoke out about how he didn't want to be there for 3+ years. They realized he would leave as a UFA. he had to be moved to retain some value. Pulujarvi has yet to be traded and the oilers made it clear they won't accept anything less that what they believe is fair value.
If Marner doesn't sign by training camp, he won't play this year. The leafs can't afford a pro rated contract. But if you look at his agent Darren ferris, he has a history of sitting out till training camp and then signing for very close to what the team wants.
If the leafs were going to pay Marner 10+ on a short deal, he would be signed now. he's getting 10+ at 6 years+, 4 and 5 years are all but off the table, and 8-9.5 at 2-3 years.
Marner is no more valuable than Aho, and if Dubas proved anything by the Nylander negotiation, he isn't afraid to hold out so that he doesn't sign a player friendly deal.
The leafs would sit out with Marner because there likely isn't deals coming in that would be worth it. The leafs have a window of about 6-8 years where they can contend. Marner sitting out a full season would be far more detrimental to his career than the leafs run. He wouldn't sit out.

That's not how waivers works. Buffalo doesn't get out of Sobotka's contract because no one else wants him.
