People are seeing that they are going to buyout Hayes. If they retain half his contract, they actually take on less cap the next 3 years and dont have any of his buyout cap hit the 3 years after his contract expires.

Keefe just try it once
Reilly's strengths are his breakout passes and rushing the puck out the zone. Hes not that great and making plays when hes down low, seems like all he does is throw pucks on net at bad angles when hes not at the blue line when hes in the offensive zone so I just dont see how he would do well as a forward.

Insider Scoop
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RazWild</b></div><div>D-Man like him? How's that.
Is he more physical? Nope. Dumba leads him in hits and H/60. About the only thing Gavrikov does over Dumba is block more shots. Which is commendable, but doesn't necessarily make him the better defenseman or mean that he's better suited for the Playoffs.
+/- is typically a pretty useless stat, but it speaks volumes when both D-men are a -2 this year but Dumba is a +8 over the last three years while Gavrikov is a -17 over that same timespan. Especially when Gavrikov is supposed to be a shutdown defenseman. Reportedly.
Dumba's defensive metrics are better than Gavrikov over the last three years while being the more productive defenseman. And at full retention, like he is here, he only costs $200k more than Gavrikov.
So tell me again how a defenseman whose style is predicated on positional play and blocking shots vs a defenseman whose defense is built on being physical, tough, gritty, and plays with an edge while still being a offensive contributor is better for playoff hockey?</div></div>
Dumba has been on a playoff team where he doesn't even take on the tough assignments while Gavrikov has been on a team thats been pretty garbage the last 3 years so yeah +/- is a pretty stupid thing to bring up. +/- is only really useful to compare players if they're on the same team. Also, Dumba throwing useless hits doesn't make him better in the playoffs LOL. He looks like a headless chicken running around in the defensive zone, at least Gavrikov is a player you can use in a shut down role. Dumba isn't. At full retention on both, Dumba costs 1.6m more. Just watch Dumba will go for a 2nd or not be traded cause nobody is willing to give up good assets for Dumba.

Why is Gavrikov worth a 1st and Dumba isn't? Dumba is and has been the better player for not just this year but for the last three combined. This isn't up for debate. It's recorded fact.
Educate yourself... here's their literal comparison. Notice how Dumba edges out Gavrikov in just about every category?
https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/frozenpool_compare.php?players%5B%5D=3947&players%5B%5D=5005&period=2022-2023%3AR%3A99
If Gavrikov is worth a 1st. So is Dumba, especially if he comes retained.</div></div>
Because dmen like Gavrikov help you win in the playoffs, he also costs half as much.

Bruh, the only defencemen better that was available last year was Chiarot and the draft was weaker. This year theres far more options and the draft is stronger. You're just but hurt cause you dont want to accept the truth. How am I hating on Dumba or the Wild by saying Dumba is only worth a 2nd lol? If I was the Leafs and was gonna trade a 1st id trade it for Gavrikov, or if I was gonna trade Knies + a 1st id trade it for Chychrun. Not a guy like Dumba that doesn't improve the team at all. The guy is only good offensively and he hasn't even been good at that this year.

He passed on Kucherov once (Namestnikov), Point three times (DeAngelo, Masin, McLeod), and Cirelli three times (Stephens, Spencer, Yan).
He might be the luckiest GM in the league with that drafting record. He also picked Koekkoek before Vasilevsky in 2012, though Vasi being the first G off the board is a fantastic pick.</div></div>
Yeah lol the Lightning have been pretty garbage drafting with early picks, their mid round picks have been whats built them to where they are and I highly doubt Yzerman is the one scouting those guys consistently. Out of Koekkoek, Vasilevsky, Drouin, DeAngelo, Howden, Stephens, Cal and Nolan Foote only Vasilevsky turned out good. I think he gets credit for getting guys like Stamkos and Hedman to below value deals tho, he held firm on Stamkos when he tried to sign for more. But even that, if he had the leverage of being in Tampa. If he was in Detroit he probably wouldn't have the leverage to get those guys to sign for cheap. It wasn't until Botteril came in and made trades for guys like Goodrow and Coleman that helped them break through, and even guys like Paul and Hagel look like they may help them be a dynasty. Yzerman could never identify guys like that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>iAce</b></div><div>That is your opinion. Reaves has been spectacular for us since joining the Wild. I was worried he would take a ton of unnecessary penalties and not contribute much else. He has been very solid in the minutes he has gotten and knows his role. While Knies looks like a hell of a prospect, he is still a prospect. Lafreniere was supposed to be a can't miss prospect but here we are. I don't value your draft picks because they are at the bottom of the round every year. Last year it was pick 25. I think it will be lower if they can make smart trades. Lastly, retaining was the other piece to the equation which you are missing. If you like Dumba his cap hit will most likely come down from the 6 million we gave him. At the end of the day this is all hypothetical but Knies and a 2nd isn't too far off for both those players and retention.</div></div>
Id rather let Knies have a chance and end up as nothing than risk him becoming a solid player for Minny if all we're getting is Matt Dumba and Reaves lol. Reaves isn't better than Dryden Hunt or ZAR so I dont know where you think hes gonna play in Toronto
