Yeah you say that every time. ...we get it. The team is not the point. Could be any team. The point is getting that contract off the books.

I figure with the financial state the league, and world, is in right now, Anaheim would be a team wanting to shed actual dollars. Toronto would have no problem having Kesler on LTIR for two seasons.

Chevy was doing pretty well with that, but I was hoping for a gamble on laine before he plays himself out of town. I think leafs had some decent deals this off season, cost of the stars are going to be interesting down the stretch, but I think this team could come together with a bruiser or two at deadline. Easier to buy veteran role players than the stars that are signed up to take ownership of squad</div></div>
Yeah I was 75% convinced Laine was gonna get dealt for help on D before he eventually signed. It seemed like a break-up was coming. Crazy how the Jets went from having the strongest right side D in the league to what it became in such a short period of time.

Leafs would be better off trading Nylander for futures let's say a the equivalent of 1st and second rounder. Having Korshov promoted to play wing, Engvall looks centre for Leafs next year. Then taking that Nylander money and signing a modest UFA or two to play defence along with LIljegren.</div></div>
I figure Doughty will be $8.5M worthy for at least 3 or 4 more years, especially if re-invigorated by joining a Cup-conteding team.....which is what the Leafs need according to their window. After that, all bets are off. They would figure it out from there. Trading Nylander for futures wouldn't fit if they're trying to win now.

Yup. Just like Chicago. Both teams took chances and were able to strike while their iron was hot. Leafs gotta hope for the same thing. Boom or bust I guess. Windows don't stay open as long as they used to with these inflated salaries.

They have enough good pieces that would speed up a rebuild if done properly.....gotta sell now though. No use waiting. Kopitar might be the only one to stick around.

Definitely long...but no way Leafs could do it without some kind of significant retention. Maybe $2M? I don't think the Kings would have a problem signing their kids, even with that retention. Especially if Brown, Carter, Quick and Toffoli are gone too.

Figured with Nylander and Liljegren included, the 2nd makes up for the lack of a 1st.

Anything south of 9.5 is a good deal for us imo

Simple if Marner would just famping sign
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I know folks like to blame the GMs or teams, but Marner is not a holdout. Marner is free to sign with any team in the NHL, for any team, in any league in the world. So while it's on the Leafs somewhat to sign Marner, it's up to Marner to find a team to sign him. What looked bad on Dubas last year, wasn't that Nylander wasn't signed in August, it's Dubas overpaid Nylander in November.</div></div>
It was only an overpayment because Nylander didn't produce. I think he will be closer to earning that number this year and beyond. Also, according to reports, they were only about $300k - $500k apart which is not that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things. Dubas would have been **** on more if he didn't sign Nylander for a measley $300k.

Marner was a 69 point player before he got a super star center. Tavares is a top 5 c in the game. Aho on the other line is the only star on his line (only forward star in his organization).
Aho is worth more</div></div>
Pisses me off that the speculation is that the other RFAs are waiting on Marner when Aho and Meier should have set the bar already.

Of course it's too much....but he WILL get too much no matter what. The thing nobody is talking about is that Matthews' deal is what messed everything up. He's making way too much, especially to walk into UFA status so soon.

Not sure that's the perception across the league, but it's debatable I guess. Speculation is Boeser is looking for around $7M per, so I think it's a good fit for Toronto.

Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jack_</b></div><div>many gm's value what zaitsev brings to the table. he is a solid player, just not the way babs uses him. look at his first season when he was put in an offensive role and got 30-40ish points. next season and the season after is when they will need bracco. he will be a good playmaker able to run the 2nd powerplay on a cheap contract. he can play both sides like most wingers on the leafs now so it doesnt matter if he is a rw, he will be a good player on his elc which is what cup contenders need. the leafs dont need toughness to give up assets for toughness, they could get their players to play tougher but look at how well they played lastnight.</div></div>
Well according to reports, they've tried to unload Zaitsev for a while with no takers. He was good in year 1, but hasn't come close to that since. We can keep Bracco, but to offload Z, you'd have to give up a high pick or a mid round pick plus a Timashov or a Holl, for example. That has to happen if we want to sign our RFA next year.
You keep mentioning last night, a game which they lost, but you don't notice they don't hit? If not for Freddie, it would be worse. We need a D that can cover the slot and move bodies out of the danger areas.
