Depth Move Before Wednesday
Leafs need to drop a contract spot to have a 3rd goalie at all. I don't think Aube-Kubel or Mete are going to move the needle much when they've been uninspiring so far.

I don't think the Sens are interested, they could re-sign DeBrincat for longer than Marner's signed. Or trade DeBrincat for a legit top 4 RD. Keeping him over Marner gives them more options.

Toronto trade and different pairings
The leafs need to shed at least one contract spot to be able to sign a non-injured goalie in case one of Kallgren or Samsonov gets hurt. There’s literally nobody healthy behind them signed to play in the NHL. Even Kallgren was run over like the day before he got called up.
I think between McMann, Steeves(ish) and especially Holmberg they’ve got a 4C in there somewhere, HOPEFULLY a 3C. And there’s Gaudette as the backup backup backup option.
Wouldn’t mind Kerfoot + Anderson for Kapanen. I think it fills a need for speed on the leaf’s shutdown line, and for the pens a desire for a rental 3C + to push over Carter to the wing.

How much does it cost exactly to acquire Bo Horvat as a rental
Isn’t Pinto lighting it up right now? There’s Giroux too. Pretty sure 2C is covered. I would think (if the sens stay hot and make the playoffs) that D depth is probably the biggest concern, especially on the right side. That’s a good problem to have.
Honestly, a one year 3C rental is probably the best bang for the buck trade that makes sense - if Norris comes back early, you’ve got C depth.

Exploring Options with Chicago
I think the Leafs are set on D. They've got Brodie-Liljegren on the right and Rielly-Sandin on the left, with Muzzin (when healthy), Giordano, Kral, Mete, and Dahlstrom fighting for 3LD and Holl, Mete, Benn, and maaaaaaayyyybe Villeneuve fighting for the 3RD. When Niemela comes along in a few years they're even deeper.

I'm not 100% up to date on the Sens' situation, but from what I understand so far, Zub is pretty much their Brodie in terms of defensive effectiveness. They're not moving him.

Massive Chicago Trade All In
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Because he's the second coming of McDavid? No offense man, but Knies is highly overrated in Toronto because he's their top or one of their top prospects (some would argue Robertson is better). Knies isn't even ranked in the top 50 prospects by Button, Wheeler or Pronman this summer (all had Robertson ahead of him) so let's be realistic on who he is and isn't. But hey, swap out Robertson instead, they both can work for Chicago I'm betting.</div></div>
The best value for the Leafs is the performance per cap dollar - Patty Kane is definitely a superstar, game changing winger, but the Leafs have no shortage of high-end talent in Matthews, Marner, Tavares, and Nylander. Robertson and Knies are important in that they provide surplus value over the span of their ELC's. Knies isn't even signed yet and if he can provide just 50% of what Leafs fans are hoping he turns out to be for 3 years that's more years of competitiveness with this core. The most frustrating part of this team isn't the GM going for the big fish, or the lack of skill - it's the inconsistency in effort. It's not something the GM or perhaps even coach can necessarily fix, but I'm interested to see how they address it this year.
I think there's a limit of 3 contracts you can retain on, too. There's bound to be teams with more cap space fighting for a playoff spot that won't require the Blackhawks to use up all of their slots.

The ask for Kerfoot would probably be a 3rd as well. Leafs need to move a few million so Engvall or Kerfoot are probably available. Depends on the needs once Norris is back - Engvall's a quicker penalty killing winger but Kerfoot's a swiss army knife and can play almost every position.

How Much For Timo Meier
I think I'd be interested to see what Robertson and Knies can contribute before trading multiple futures and prospects. This also frees up the extra cap to fill out the rest of the roster for when guys like Kerfoot, Engvall, and Kampf move on.
It's probably not sustainable to be spending under 3 million for your goaltending.

I think the only moveable player without protections to worry about is Engvall.
It's also waaaay too early to be judging Sandin on the right without the backup plan in Holl. I'd rather not start the season with zero natural RD.

Thoughts on these lines with a fully healthy lineup
I'm dubious with Sandin on the right, but we'll see how it goes.
I think I'd prefer to have Holl on the third pair at 2 million than Engvall at 2.25 on the fourth line, especially if Sandin doesn't work out on the right (or Giordano or Muzzin get injured).
There's also Zach Aston-Reese who could provide more value than Engvall at a sub 1 million cap hit, at least defensively. While I like Engvall a lot, I think the defensive nature of Kampf's line and the readiness of waiver ineligible pieces in Steeves, Holmberg, and McMann make Engvall more replaceable.
I think Kerfoot being the 3C makes more sense than Tavares, especially minutes-wise.

Robertson and Dobson
You have no cap left for Stützle’s, Zub’s, and Sanderson’s next contracts, or a potential D upgrade to fix the top 4 or potentially add at the deadline.
As it is you’re going to have a timing problem with Giroux’s second and third years with the young RFA’s next contracts.
If DeBrincat or Robertson (doubtful but really nice) is the future you’re going to have to decide which one of Batherson, Stützle, Norris, Tkachuk, or Giroux is out the door. There’s too many high cap guys and the sens need to even out their roster. Or pray that league min and ELC defence corps can over-perform.

Leafs cant keep Kerfoot
Given Kerfoot's actually kinda good at C, gotta imagine Engvall's in the discussion for trades as well. His PK'ing can be replaced with Zach Aston-Reese at less than half the cost, and his value's never been higher.
Also don't think Simmonds can crack this year's Leaf's roster, even as an extra - McMann, Steeves, Malgin, and Holmberg all look ready to steal a spot when fully healthy. Gaudette is injured as well, and I think Steeves has mostly been a RW or LW in the NHL.

I didn't attempt to add picks or prospects to even it out. I know Norris isn't as good as Lindholm yet, but he's 23 and signed long-term and just came off of a 0.82p/game season on the Senators. I was looking through different Calgary fans' posts and it looks like they're re-signing Weegar at 6 million and thought having 3 expensive RD wouldn't be an ideal use of their cap when Huberdeau's extension kicks in.

Also gotta remember that no team issued him an offer sheet that he signed. Sandin has zero leverage as an RFA, under 90 NHL games, and was offered his QO for 1 year that's less than that number.
The comparable players like Anderson, Liljegren, and Durzi all got less money than 1.8 and so will he (barring a major trade).

Running a 20-man roster can only go on for so long with Muzzin and Giordano probably being load managed this year.

Ottawa might be able to make it to the playoffs if they were in a worse division - the Atlantic is a bloodbath. I don't think they're getting a wildcard with Tampa - Toronto - Florida soaking up the top 3 spots and the Bruins, Sabres, and Red Wings competing for a wildcard spot. I also thought I heard people talking about how Chychrun is better on the left, and the Sens are fully stocked on LD. I also don't see how they could afford to keep Zub if Chyrchun is making 4.6 long-term (unless they move a significant player).

Sandin for CMM
Not commenting on value (because it's more than fair), but organizationally there's a need for a cost-controlled second pairing d-man in 2 years when Matthews re-signs. Brodie, Muzzin, and Giordano are all done and there's going to be a need for Sandin's services in that position behind Rielly.
