Babcock wtf
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>blowing_the_zone</b></div><div>I agree with you, Goulet - the line up choices can baffle me sometimes. As do some of his systems... Babs will do Babs things, and that's tolerable when they're winning, but witnessing this last run leaves me scratching my head.. the players get critized all the time when things aren't going well, by the media, the fanbase and Babcock himself. Babcock shouldn't be beyond reproach .
The things that stand out and bother me are a) his rhetoric about how players need to constantly adapt their game (should hold true for Babcock too.. change up the systems, the break outs, the PP - good god, it sucks right now! and with all that talent..), b) the obvious double standard that exists for different players over the last two years (i.e. Hyman, Brown, Marleau, Hainsey, Lindholm can do no wrong.. Johnsson, Kappy, Nylander, Dermot, Sparks and others look afraid to make mistakes).. c) his compulsive desire to line match, and then being out played at that game by other coaches, and d) ice time allocation amongst players... I don't think Matthews is even in the top 40 for centremen icetime per game across the league??
I became a fan of Babs when he took a bottom placed sqaud, dressed like 9 rookies the next year, let them play to their strengths, and took him to the playoffs.. now?? I don't know, but if the leafs bow out in the 1st round again this year I expect Babcock to have his feet held to the fire.. not suggesting he gets fired, but he needs to stop offloading all the responsibility onto his players, show he can adapt pre game and in game, , and be held held accountable for the outcome..</div></div>
Babs isn't perfect but he's not at all what you say here. He does for sure adapt and change, he does have players he likes more than others but it mainly because their compete level is where it should be. The #1 issue with this squad is they don't have a high enough compete level all the time. They play like winning is just going to happen and give 75% effort. Sure Babs deserves some blame for that but really if this team gets better at playing hard. They'll be much better.

I’d rather see hainsey and zaitsev swapped. Let hainsey be the stay at home guy for Gardiner and let Dermott and Zaitsev build chemistry as 2-way dmen that are capable of reading each other when one decides to pinch

If Bettman allowed the Oilers to swap only 5 players for completing their needs
If Bettman allows something like this, it is not going to be for the Oilers. The NHL basically gift wrapped McDavid for the OIlers even though they didn't deserve him. Then they proceed to butt fumble several times and decide to f*** up their team with the best player in the world. This team literally should get no sympathy whatsoever.

Even if Nylander doesn't play this year, the Leafs are probably worse this year making this trade, and definitely worse in the future.

Some of those teams "saved by the cap" also employ the same amount of voting members of NHLPA. The NHLPA also wants to protect and have as many members as possible. Losing franchises does not serve the NHLPA well and it doesn't serve the owners of the NHL teams that just must have been disbanded.

Leafs by Nov 28th if nylander wont be able to be signed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>linehan10</b></div><div>If you’re buying UFA years, you gotta go higher. It’s not a foreign concept, for its common in today’s NHL. If Dubas is so hell bent on getting these guys at his lower number than what they’re actually worth, guys are gonna sit out. It’s not worth it for Nylander to play for $40m when he could get $60m from a handful of teams.</div></div>
But the Dubas (actually it's MLSE) isn't hell bent at getting these guys at lower number, it's not paying a hometown premium. Heck. any team could sign Nylander for an inflated 8m a year for five years and just give up a modest 1st, 2nd and 3rd in compensation, but no team wants to pay Nylander 8m, probably few teams think he's worth 7m. IMO it's a phoney issue that the Leafs are being cheap in their negotiations, and it's unrealistic to think other teams want to overpay either. Now I know "what he's worth is subjective" to us and real GMs, but there is no benefit to the Leafs to lowball Nylander and have him sit for two month or even one year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>There was a report from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star the other day. Saying Dubas's original plan was to trade for a "game changing" RHD. But given the situation now they are unable to find that and will simply be settling for "cost control" on a trade. They have asked teams to submit offers on who is available. I think a trade is coming soon. By the end of the week if there is going to be one.I can't imagine teams will go out on a limb with no time to work it out. It would be interesting to know if Nylander has already started talking about contracts with other teams. If that's the case it would be pretty hard for Toronto to low ball him an offer.
At the end of the day it looks like bringing in JT cost Toronto JVR and Nylander. I'm not sure that was a win for Toronto.</div></div>
This is ridiculous, never a plan to trade nylander. The plan was always to draft and develop. Bozak and jvr had to leave. To piss poor on defence. The Tavares signing is sure looking like a great move right now. Regardless of his contract the leafs should not overpay nylander. It’s just not a winning formula in cap era nhl.

So what was talked about in Geneva
Nylander might have a issue with the Leafs regarding term and money. But I think the Leafs offer is not much different than what almost all NHL teams would offer Nylander. So Nylander's destinations for bigger bucks isn't that large, then the Leafs have to make deal with that team.
Sorry Willy, save this term and $$$ leverage when you're a UFA. Teams like you as player but you're 20g 40a guy.....that gets about 6.5m long term, less in a bridge.

Nylander
Yeah I don't think I'd make that trade, I don't see Larson as that far ahead of Zaitsev. Maybe Brown and Zaitsev for Larsson would work but not a 1st as well. Its an upgrade but it's a tad steep. The other problem with the trade is it still leaves you with having to ice Hainsey. I think an addition should be made but to take him out of the top pair not replacing Zaitsev.
Zaitsev has been good so far this season, he's not a problem on the team. Gardiner giving drop passes to the opposition when he's skating out of his own zone is a bigger problem than Zaitsev.

Next Year Salary Problems
Every Leaf hater on this site. Toronto can't afford their stars.
SEE! (Proceeds to give them insane contracts)
No one ever has said Nylander will be getting 9 million a season, the speculative reports out there that are based off nothing but media guys trying to create buzz has him asking for 8.5 tops which the team is not going to give him. So how about you trim about 2 million off that one.
I'd say Marner at 8.5 is a tad high as well, I think he'll go around 7.5-8.5 tops. So trim half a mill off that one as well.
Matthews wants to win, and he wants to be the best player in the league, he isn't going to go all premadona and demand 12 million, he'll get right around Tavares money so take a million off that as well.
Now you have an additional 3.5 million to work with.
Now that those guys are signed lets look at the holes that are left to fill.
The team is losing 2 defenceman this off season in Hainsey and Gardiner. Both will be replaced with Marlies. Rosen, Borgman, Sandin and Dermott will either move higher in the linup or into the lineup. Liljegren I think will make the club next season as well and Ozhiganov will be playing 3rd pairing minutes so he'll likely be open to a 1 or 2 year bridge deal to show us what he can do higher up the depth chart. So the defence is taken care of without spending much money at all. Will it be elite? Not likely but it won't be terrible, in fact Liljegren instead of Hainsey is likely a huge upgrade.
What other holes are their?
The 4th line? We are still looking at around 5-6 million left to spend. A centre will be around a million dollars and I don't care who it is. Kapanen and Johnsson will likely be offered 1 year bridge deals or one of them may get a Hyman style contract and you end up with about a million or so and a full roster. Its not ideal but if its really not good, then the next year is fine once Marleau is off the books.
So you are welcome, it can be done and it'll be awesome.

Duchene, Stone, and Karlsson Return (Melnyk sells)
Why not? Actually despite the hate for Melynk, I don't think he tried to squeeze his players on contracts. It costs a team about 140m to run it's team. So whether you spend 68m or 82m salaries next year, it doesn't really affect Melynk's bottom line. And a good team, paying customers and playoffs means more revenue for the owner.
Like any business, good even highly paid employees make the owners money
