(OTT / NYR) - Brassard for Zibanejad
The Senators were bridging all their players at this time. I suspect they were trying to win before 2018-19 when many of their key RFA deals would expire. If they did not make this trade, Zibanejad leaves as a UFA. He didn't breakout as a superstar until what would have been his final season under contract with the Senators. That same season, the Senators received a 1st round pick and two B/C type prospects for Matt Duchene. Matt Duchene was on pace for nearly 100 points. It is unlikely that Zibanejad would have returned much more than that.
Ultimately, it is astounding that the Senators were in such a bad spot due to Melnyk's budget that trading away Zibanejad before he broke out wouldn't have changed things one bit. The odds of the Senators signing him to the same mid-term extension the Rangers did was pretty low. He would have been gone as a UFA anyways. The same as Stone, Karlsson, Hoffman, Duchene, etc.

(OTT / NYR) - Brassard for Zibanejad
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>carbonxe</b></div><div>I love coming back to this trade and wondering who the 9 people are who not only thought this wasn't one of the worst trades of all time, but thought Ottawa won the trade.</div></div>
I don’t think this ever looked like a good trade for Ottawa, especially with the draft picks included (I had forgotten about that – I remembered it as one-for-one), but if you look at what the two players had done up to that point, and the fact that Ottawa’s management still thought they had a chance to be a contender (apparently they were right about that, for one year), it doesn’t look as lopsided as it does today. Even so, when you consider his age and the upward trajectory that Zibanejad was on, it didn’t seem to make sense to let him go for a guy six years older. The only motivation I could think of for Ottawa was that Brassard was signed for 3 more years, but even if Zibanejad wanted out, they could have got two more years out of him before he could walk.

(TOR/STL) - Joshua for future considerations
Dakota Joshua looks like a decent prospect. He put up decent numbers which translates some potential to becoming a bottom 6 guy. Depending on what the condition is, but I say the Blues get an easy win here.

Carolina Hurricanes signed Joel Nyström (2 Years / $925,000 AAV)
Very smooth skating defenseman, and has such a elite shot, and is yet another right-handed dman to get signed. He has a euro clause, which isn't surprising since he already signed a 2 year extension (through 25-26), with Farjestad BK, and he should come over to NA in the 25-26 season. He's not the biggest dmen at 5'11", but he skates so well, and got first pairing RD minutes most of the season in the SHL. Improved his point totals, and did good in the Champions league, not bad for a 7th round pick that was an overager. Should be in NA for the 25-26 as a 23 year old, and might not take him long to reach the NHL, we'll have to see. Also his rights were set to expire in June 2025, so despite us burning a year of his contract (pretty much), good to have him signed already before then.

At 100 games played dmen are still developing. We'll see.</div></div>
You do realize that he played the #1LD role the entire season and ended with playing 25 min a game and had the highest DPS on the team including veterans like Seth Jones and Connor Murphy. They eye test proved it too. Went up against the hardest opponent's night in night out and he played well.
Let's rephrase this from the MTL perspective. How pissed off were you when Caufield got his contract? He had what...120 games under his belt vs 97. They're both 2019 draftees. Being a defensive Dman is effort based, where scoring can be hit or miss. $4.6M per when the cap is increasing the way it will be is amazing.

What was the rush to sign him long-term???? Sorry but this guy is a 3rd pairing dman. Hate the risk to this.</div></div>
I mean, look at players like John Marino, Mikey Anderson, Rasmus Andersson, Jakob Chychrun, Brett Pesce, Mattias Samuelsson, etc all have gotten this type of deal and excelled, Nikita Zaitsev is about the only player who has gotten this type of contract and not done well. Vlasic had a really good year and Chicago has all the cap space in the world, when they'll be competing, they'll be glad to have a solid top 4D under 5mil

(NSH/TBL) - Jeannot for Foote, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
At the time of this trade, I didn’t realize that Jeannot was a pending RFA. I was thinking this was another Hagel trade. That one looked like an overpay until you realized that the value in that trade was in Hagel’s contract – two more years at only $1.5M and then still a RFA after that. This was not the same thing at all, because Jeannot had no contract after the 2023 playoff run. They acquired him for an unknown number of years at an unknown cap hit. I think it looks better now that they’ve signed him for two more years, and if he bounces back to anywhere close to his old form he will be underpaid for those two years (though still not quite the bargain Hagel’s contract is), but it was risky clearing the cupboard for somebody who could have been awarded a higher AAV and a shorter term in arbitration.
The right question to ask when you’re evaluating this trade is not whether Tampa Bay will probably get more out of Jeannot than they would have got out of those draft picks if they had kept them, but whether they could have got more out of those picks by using them in different trades instead of burning them all on Jeannot. It’s all about the opportunity cost.

I understand trading to get depth for a playoff run, but in that case, you trade a midlevel pick.
Christ, Toronto traded a 3rd for Luke Schenn and Luke Schenn clearly had a bigger impact on the series.

Injuries happen. Whatever.
My issue with getting Jeannot:
JBB went against what worked previous years. Goodrow, Coleman, Hagel, and Paul were all having career years when we traded for them. Jeannot was having his worst year and we still paid a premium for him.
I don't mind spending assets at the deadline, but JBB's hubris got the better of him here.

(CGY/PHI/VGK) - Hanifin for for Miromanov, 2024 5th (VGK), 2025 1st (VGK), 2025 3rd (VGK)
They say this “circumvention” rule is fair because all teams can use it, but that’s not true. Teams can use it only if they happen to have injuries that take them to the end of the regular season.
LTIR exists to enable teams to replace players who have serious injuries. That makes sense, but they should never be able to turn it into an advantage. That incents teams to try to get their players hurt, provided they can time it right. I don’t think any team would do that intentionally, but a rule that creates such a possibility is morally wrong.
One way to solve this problem would be to say that if a player is on LTIR at end of the regular season, he can’t come back for the playoffs. However, the NHL isn’t just competition, it’s also entertainment. They don’t want their best players sitting in the press box if they’re capable of playing. The real problem is that the salary cap doesn’t count in the playoffs. They may have decided on that because it’s very difficult to clear cap space after the trade deadline, since you can’t trade away players. I think the rule should be that your team can be over the cap during the playoffs, but under no circumstances can the players you dress for a game have a combined cap hit that’s above the cap. That way you can bring back your injured players, but you can’t stack the team around them with all the extra players you brought in to replace them. Or you could if you could find some other way to take money out of the lineup. Basically, you’d probably have to scratch your most overpaid players rather than your weakest players. Such a team would still have an advantage over a team that’s cap compliant, but not as much as now, when they can dress whomever they want even if they’re way over the cap.

Vegas Golden Knights signed Noah Hanifin (8 Years / $7,350,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Random2152</b></div><div>This contract is a pretty good example on how tax advantage is much smaller than most people think given his offer in CGY was for 7.5. Like yeah it totally exists but it isnt really anything to get antsy about and claim it to be a massive factor. 0.15M is roughly the gap.</div></div>
This doesn't make sense. The tax advantage is substantial and much more than $150k.
The difference for Hanifin each year making $7.35M in Vegas vs. Calgary is $640k take home:
Vegas (taxed at 38.9% from https://www.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=7350000&from=year&region=Nevada): $7.35M -> $4.49M take home
Calgary (taxed at 47.6% from https://ca.talent.com/tax-calculator?salary=7350000&from=year&region=Alberta): $7.35M -> $3.85M take home
If Hanafin stays all 8 years in Vegas, the total take home difference between signing in Vegas vs. Calgary is $5.12M. This would mean Hanafin would have to play over 9 years in Calgary to take home the same earnings as he does in 8 years in Vegas.

Solid pickup for the Panthers, the come up of this kid over the last season is such a great story. Was sort of a nobody, then just randomly became his teams best defenseman. He's got a giant frame and is a free prospect, not much to complain about. Great for the Panthers, I am a very big fan of this very big player.
