Fair enough - would Monahan instead of Gaudreau be more appealing?
If so - I think it would be more straight across - no draft picks. Or I might argue the Wild may have to throw in a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Gaudreau is in his last year - basically a rental. Most likely going to free agency
Meanwhile Dumba is locked up for 3 years and is a top 3 Right shot Defenseman.
I concede that if the contracts were of equal length - I would drop the picks.

Maybe Kylington/Bennett instead along with a 1st and 3rd?
Thats a pretty good package.
I agree it would be expensive, but if the rumours are true his name is being floated in trade talks!!
I think he would be a great add.

I think this would be a serious overpayment. Brodie should fetch a 1st, 2nd and late pick - or a 1st and a couple 3rds at least! Top 4 D-men are more valuable than rental wingers. Bennett, despite slow development, would still get late 1st or 2nd, by 'top prospect' I assume you mean a 1st rounder, and a mid round pick . . . for one year of Simmonds. That is a lot of assets for a rental.
In my opinion, Brodie alone would be an overpayment!

Thanks for feedback - I read on TSN that "Simmonds is on the Block". In the article it says Hextall, during an interview, noted that cap space was a factor and that there was some young guys in need of new contracts (Provorov and Konecny specifically mentioned). The article noted Simmonds name was not mentioned when Hextall discussed future key signings leading to speculation that Simmonds on the block. While I agree Philly would most likely be interested in adding a top player via free agency and trade - that addition doesn't necessarily have to come from trading away Simmonds. My offer of Dube, (or another FWD prospect like Mangiapane or Foo), Kylington, and Bennett, gives them young, decent, controllable assets in return for a rental. If Simmonds had more term - I agree he could fetch more, but as a one year rental I think my offer is more than fair. Each of the 3 prospects could likely get late 1sts or 2nds for sure and are close to NHL. As I mentioned in the description - CGY could add a pick on the condition of an extension. Philly frees up cap space for free agent splash and stocks some prospects! CGY gets the right-shot RW they need and a pick that they need.

1 trade + 2 signings = Flames fixed
Would love to get Stone! but Hamilton is a #1 defenseman and getting better every year - there are not many 'realistic' players I would trade him for.
While I think Stone is in their long term plans - I think Ott would listen to any offer that included getting rid of Ryan.
How about Stone/Ryan for Brodie/Brouwer/Prospect(Dube/Kylington/Mangiapane)? Maybe also a late pick to seal it?
Sens get a #3 D-man that can play either side, a solid prospect, and a RW replacing Ryan's massive contract with a shorter less expensive contract.
That Ryan contract is BAD!

Fla and NYI trade
Fox is going back to Harvard for another year . . . and has not necessarily committed to playing for CGY in the future.
If we can flip him for a mid to late 1st then the timelines for getting that player into the lineup are not that delayed.
Then how about Bjugstad for Bennett and Dube?
I agree CGY window is opening quickly - so getting an established 1st line RW in exchange for Bennett and a guy who hasn't yet cracked the lineup makes sense.
If CGY waited for possible breakouts by Bennett and Dube - that may take a couple years!
I'm all for giving Brodie a chance to rebound after last year - having him clicking gives the Flames a better opportunity to win than handing minutes over to a rookie . However if the price is right, and coaches were confident enough in young D-men, I would take the picks.

Chi trade?
Fair enough - I agree Kane is the most unlikely of the core to go.
However everyone plays the 'would be cool' game. Both of you commenting here that my idea will never happen - have created teams depicting scenarios where Chicago get John Tavares - another long term +$10 mill player.
How likely is that!!!
But aside from that - as for my cost:
Brodie should fetch a 1st and a 2nd, or a 1st and a couple 3rds.
Bennett - despite his slower development should still command a late 1st or a couple 2nds.
Kylington - is developing well and would command the 2nd (he was drafted at) plus more - probably another 2nd.
So if CGY offered 2x1sts, 2x2nds, and 2x3rds, Chi would listen.
Now you can argue that Chi would not be interested in this combo of players, but I stand by the approximate value of the package.
Thanks

Overhaul
Good ideas, but I think in every instance CGY could do a little better.
1) Hamilton would get you Nylander, a 4th, and a 1st!
2) Stone - could probably fetch a 2nd or 3rd
3) Skinner - don't mind the deal - as long as Skinner agreed to an extension before the deal was done. A 1 year rental is not enough. Car would also need to throw in a late pick.
4) Rights to Fox - should get a late 1st back.
5) While I personally wouldn't do the deal for Ryan - I would make Ottawa at least take Brouwer's contract back as well.

Flames - Det Cap Trouble
Thanks for the comment
This is the article I was basing my idea on:
<a href="http://thehockeywriters.com/red-wings-facing-significant-salary-cap-issues/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://thehockeywriters.com/red-wings-facing-significant-salary-cap-issues/</a>
Even with LTIR used on Franzen, Detroit is right up against the cap ceiling with Athanasiou still to sign.
I'm not saying Detroit couldn't trade with other teams, but trading a $4 million backup on a rebuilding team is a good way to free up some space.
Maybe what I was asking for was a bit too rich, but I think CGY could replenish a pick or two by looking at something like this.

Exactly how I feel. I like the idea of Bennett on the wing in the top 6 (RW on top line or LW with Backlund and Frolik). Jankowski deserves a shot in the lineup too. I'm hoping Lazar is having a good offseason and gets his game back on track. Even if one or two of these guys get their games going it would go a long way to making them a true contender. Look forward to seeing guys like Foo and Mangiapane get some time and eventually Dube.
I like the idea of rotating the 6th D-man among their top prospects - Kulak, Andersson, Kylington and Valimaki to give them all a taste.

And, this is why the Wild still have cap problems...
I assumed Granlund was higher priority than Niederreiter and would get the longer term, but I could be wrong?? As a Flames fan, the player I would most covet from the Wild would be RW Coyle. Because you are asking for Cap Relief, the only returns CGY could offer would be in the form of prospects like Jankowski, Shinkaruk, Kylington. Do you think a package of Ferland, Kylington, and Goalie M. McDonald would be enough?
Ennis too expensive for Flames, maybe Zucker - but wouldn't be enough of upgrade from what we've got. Would love Granlund, but can't fit him into Flames Cap as well.

Flames - trade with WPG
@KS42SL -
2017 - Marcus Johansson (26) traded for a 2nd and 3rd.
2017 - Panarin traded for Saad - just for cost certainty.
2016 - Taylor Hall (24 at time) trade for Larsson - a 23 yo with 2.5 NHL years and 37 points but a controllable contract.
2015 - Kessel (27 at time) and a 2nd traded for essentially Kapanen, a 1st and 3rd.
My point is for even a top 30 yo winger with 2 years left (1 year left if trade deadline deal as I suggested) on a team that will likely make some changes, the return I suggested isn't as illogical as you suggest.
You can argue maybe a mid round draft pick or another prospect should be added.
As for your Gaudreau comparison - Gaudreau (23 yo on a long term contract) is not an accurate comparable to 30 yo Wheeler on short deal. IMO Ellis>Rittich, Ferland>>Khaira, Kylington>>>>Simpson. WPG, depending on how Trouba gets handled may be looking for young controllable D prospects ready for NHL as soon as next year.

Flames - trade with WPG
@ LazarBeams - I know it's tight, but like I said in the description - assuming CGY in the playoff mix and WPG out, would be a great pickup for a playoff run. When I look at WPGs roster, and next years off season, some of their younger players will be looking for raises, and likely one of Little or Wheeler may be moved. When I look at what Ferland and Versteeg produced last year and what they signed for, I don't think Bennett is underpaid - he has yet to show his potential. Maybe a 2-year deal instead of 3. Kulak - same thing, only has 30 NHL games under his belt - can't see him making more than what I signed him for.

Trade with Flames..
I'm pretty sure the Flames would make this deal. I think if the leafs offered a 5th rounder - they would take it. There is an almost 0% chance Wideman is a Flame next year (expiring contract), and he is currently 6th-8th on depth chart with a cap hit of >$5 million. I would be shocked if they didn't take this trade.

Expansion Draft Eligbility
I think it would be cool to be able to see which players currently qualify to be selected by the new Vegas team (ie. experience requirements, contract details etc).
I know the official requirements have been established, but trying to establish which (roster and non-roster) players have met the requirements (even on our favourite teams), is difficult for us fans to figure out easily.
I think it would be interesting to see in both the 'Daily Cap Tracker' pages, as well as in the 'Armchair-GM' section.
