<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>He is not a need.

First, look at our cap in two years once Hughes and Nemec get their big deals.

Second, he doesn’t fill a position we need to fill. We need a dman, a 3C, a bottom-sized or two, and a goalie.

Third, while he adds attributes we are looking for (compete, physicality) it’s the combination of those things plus offense that makes him so expensive. We have the offense, we can acquire competitiveness and physicality more cheaply.

Fourth, we don’t want to destroy our depth in one deal for one guy. We had a ton of injuries this year, and lack of depth (and experience) was an issue for us at times.

Fifth, we are not trying to build a top-heavy team with a handful of big-$$ guys and a bunch of extras. We already have Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Meier, Hamilton at $7m+…and eventually Luke and Nemec too. There won’t be room left.

Sixth, giving up Nemec isn’t worth it. He is our best defensive dman right now, barely 20 years old. Good chance he is a top-20 dman before his ELC runs out.

Seventh, depending on what happens with that 1st, it could be used or traded for an important asset going forward. We would then be left with little ammo to fill our actual holes (that we need to fill)

Eight, people forget we were a 112-point team last year. While we probably weren’t that good of a team then, we also aren’t as bad as a team now as our record indicates.

Ninth, he is a winger. A darn good one that leaves his impact on the game, but still a winger. There are only so many minutes to go around. We were already having a tough time getting Meier power play minutes or rotating Mercer into top-6. Adding another big ticket one would ultimately depress the value and impact of all of them.

Tenth, the reality of today’s NHL is that cheap wingers will always be available in off-season.</div></div>

You can literally roll:

Tkachuk - Hughes - Bratt
Meier - Hischier - Mercer
Gritsyuk - Helenius - Hameenaho

Sieg - Hamilton
Hughes - Marino
Vilen - Casey

You’re absolutely on drugs if you don’t take this lineip

Can Jersey fans stop pretending that Mercer has the same value as Swayman?

I’d offer Ullmark and our 2025 first for Mercer, but would fully expect Jersey to say no and counter. There are probably half a dozen possible trades that could work for Ullmark.

I don’t believe Sweeney even engages in discussions for Swayman especially now. Unless the objective is to stop discussions and have them focus on other teams, the continued mention of Swayman likely isn’t going to create a positive outcome</div></div>

At deadline, Sweeney (or third team) tried pulling NJD into three-way deal with Ullmark. Fitzy instead asked about Swayman and was told to pound sand. I'm glad he asked.

For me, as a fan, I think an unsigned Swayman for an unsigned Mercer is a reasonable price....considering one of those guys went through arbitration last year, was expected to extend in January, and has spoken publicly about how hurtful a process that was. The other is expected to entertain team-friendly deal.

Only me.

Once Swayman extends, I don't think Mercer-for-Swayman would be much of an option. Until then, probably fair game...

The most realistic is probably 2025 pick for Ullmark (done after July 1st).
