<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>biased_leafs_fan</b></div><div>AND HABS FANS WANTED BOURQUE + A 1ST 😂😂😂😂</div></div>
Fans of other teams (certainly not the Red Wings) were demanding the 1st overall pick to be attached to Petry.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>As a Habs fan I agree with you about Barrie, it is the same thing that we Habs fans have been arguing relentlessly about Petry LOL.</div></div>
Not nearly the same thing. Petry is 4 years older and appears to have lost a step, and is on pace to score just 20 points this season if he plays all remaining games. Plus he's making $6.25M for 3 more years ($20M cash owed), at which point he'll be 37.
Barrie is scoring at a point-per-game clip right now and is on pace to finish with 42 - more than twice Petry's scoring pace. He's only 30 and has 2 more years left at $4.5M ($9.5M owed). Very different situations.
Petry also has significant signing bonuses that make any potential buyout very painful.

This summer
People don't appreciate retention for multiple years enough. It's a limited resource (3 per team), and the potential return value added for rentals alone, normally exceeds what the proposal offers.
$2.2M is roughly the value of a 3rd round pick. For three years, that's three 3rds.
Dvorak was just acquired for a 1st and a 2nd. Montreal isn't about to flip him at a significant loss after one below average, issue-plagued season.
Even if Montreal did decide to cut bait, they aren't going to move him at 50% retained for a pair of 3rds.
Pitlick is likely matched at that price.
A free 3rd isn't a bad return for a waiver pickup, but he's shown enough to suggest he can be a contributor at the NHL level and have a positive impact on the team.
Even then, you're better off proposing a trade than going the offer sheet route.
If Montreal is ready to let him go, he won't be that difficult to acquire. If they want to keep him, you're not offering enough to change their mind.

Ship as sailed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shire</b></div><div>For an RFA with insane defensive stats and a great transition game while on a mediocre team who is liked by pretty much every coach hes been with and who can play up and down the lineup with almost anyone. Yes a 1st and a 3rd is more than fair for him. If he was 3 years younger for the same stats he probably would've gotten more than Hagel.</div></div>
Hagel shooting 23% is somehow sustainable and he's done so for less than a season. i get his contract is great but that was the definition was selling high. Lehkonen is a better player in any large sample size. They are quite comparable. Makes me laugh when ppl dont get that this is the market. very few decent young middle 6 forwards with team control available with a low AVV, Hagel and Lehkonen are those forwards which creates an inflated market

If the Panthers knew that Giroux would only waive his NMC for Florida
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Shire</b></div><div>Main reason I believe this is a fair trade that could learn in Philly's favour is because of the fact that the 1st rounder is far away. Florida could potentially not be a good team in 3-4 years since a lot of their core players will need significant pay raises by then, so theres an actual chance that the 2024/25 pick could be near the top 10.</div></div>
Interesting point. I tend to think of future firsts as having less value, but I suppose that if you are comparing it to the very late first that this years pick will be (which the Sabres own), suppose it could be better to have a pick in the future. Also, as a gm you run the risk of acquiring future assets that the guy who replaces you gets to spend. I don't think it's a bad trade, especially since the door is still left open for giroux to return to Philly.

Habs laugh at you considering Chiarot and Lehkonen are 1st rounders each at minimum</div></div>
I'd say this is actually close depending on how Gorton feels about Chytil.
While I consider 1sts to be on the high end of a Chiarot or Lehkonen return, I'd be willing to forego the chance of a 1st for Lundkvist since he's closer to ready and fills a need.
I wouldn't do the same for Chytil, but considering the likelihood of two 1sts is slim and there's a 3rd added (a better pick than we'd expect for Kulak), I think it is more or less in line value wise with what we might actually get in separate trades.
