This wasn't an opinion thing. This was what were the lines people were playing on in group A, B, C today. Only "opinion" was that say not listing the willman-engaras-thompson line as one of the four lines. I just went with
Hischier
Hughes
Haula
McLeod
And whoever they had on their line.
It is simply to look back on later to see how close/far off cause I think it is interesting.
And I would say Holtz is more than in the mix today. He was put on a like with Meier and Hischier and by any account I could find it looks like they made Timo play on the left.

Forced trades
If Calgary wanted Haula and he was willing to go there he could have done so during free agency. Trading a player after signing them before a game is even played (barring sign and trade type things where the player is aware before signing) is a good way to get a very bad reputation with players. It isn't in the devils interest to do that.
The devils don't seem to be the ideal trade partner for a top pairing defenseman. I don't think they would give up that much for him and I think another team with less top end defenseman probably would give up more than they would.

Signed Palat the year before, got Meier, everyone locked up long term and Mercer is valued higher.
Holtz isn't a bottom 6 guy and no spots available for him in the top 6 for the forseeable future, unless injuries
And I forgot they also traded for Toffoli</div></div>
These are all different players that do different things. The closest would be Toffoli and then Mercer as far as role. But Toffoli is a rental. He is here for a good time not necessarily a long time. If Holtz shows up they can just let him go in free agency.
Holtz is a scoring winger. If everything works out perfectly he goes into the top six with Bratt, Meier, and potentially Mercer. Mercer could also play center but he is capped as a devil there at 3C most likely and that's its own debate in which is higher values 3C or top 6 winger. Especially if the devils break convention down a bit and just run 3 good lines.
That's best case for Holtz. Would it be the end of the world if he was middle 6? Not really.
As far as the team being high on him, supposedly he had a talk with management and this is a make or break year for him. Which isn't "high" but also isn't "low/trade". It's unlikely they trade him before the season.

Mercer Extension 2024-25
Like most are saying it's looking more like $7M for comparables today.
With the hyper inflation that is expected with the cap, that could easily be $8-$8.5 if the deal isn't done soon. The cap is artificially deflated due to COVID. If the game does not grow at all and there is no monetary inflation in the next 2-3 years it STILL would go up by $10 million in that time. It's at $83.5M and projects to $93M in 2 years. Start slapping a $1M on these estimates in the $6+ range.

Palat is lowkey getting overpaid but its okay
Palat and Dougie are fairly often quoted as the contracts that didn't take a "buy in" discount. The argument usually is that the later really good contracts wouldn't have come without them on the team.
That is an unprovable rabbit hole I'm not going down here.
Palat was injured. He is a solid defense first player who can play on any of the lines when needed. Defense just doesn't show up on the stat sheets as well.
And as much as some people hate "intangible" talk, the first goal in game seven in the rangers series last season goes down stat wise as an assist for palat. In reality it was him wanting it more than two opponents in a game seven by himself and then unselfishly giving up a very high danger shot to give McLeod an even better one. There is value in a player like that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pens1991</b></div><div>Honestly isn't too bad of a team. However, I kind of view the Zucker and Stecher signings as TDL targets for contenders, and same with the Durzi trade. Wouldn't be shcoked if they trade Boyd and sanford as well.</div></div>
In that same vein, could not the signings be more TDL fodder?
If their stats are good, maybe a Tomas Tatar or Matt Dumba fetches some draft picks or prospects at the TDL.
I don't think Suter has the same appeal but he is also the cheapest. $1.5M for a 4th line center isn't breaking the bank.
Dumba is yet another defenseman and he could probably be wooed if promised to try to trade him at the deadline. Buyers at the deadline are contenders. It's like picking a winning horse halfway through the race.
Tatar is the oldest of the bunch. Maybe better as a short contract. Though again with the money thing, if the Yotes have to hang on to him for a year or two .... Is $3.75 really that much for a second line winger? You gotta pay someone.
Unless there is a developmental wing that could better use the time investment. Gunther maybe? Is his development that stunted in 3rd vs 2nd?

A goalie and some gridiron dmen
The Bahl deal is sneakily good. It's too good for someone who plays hockey to pass up since any game could be their last.
At the same time if he gets no better than he is it is almost certainly still cheaper than what they would have to pay at market rate if they did say 1 year stints at a time while the cap goes up.
So it's a bad deal if he gets LTIRetired (not for the cap but for the rich guy who just bought a football team and has his insuarance premium go up). But it is a good deal if he gets literally any better.
Paying $2.35M for a shutdown 2nd line defenseman in 3+ years would probably be insane. Honestly that's a good deal for probably $4M this year.
Is 2nd line shutdown defensive defenseman within his skill ceiling? I think so.

Speaking of Nosek, looks like you started this ACGM before the trade. He exists as a devil now.

That's the other team called Mercer Extension Optimistic. Except still at $8m there.
With an artificially deflated flat cap over the past couple seasons due to escrow I am assuming the agents are going to start expecting more money as it goes up $4M-$5M each year for a bit. $8M being the new $7M.
Either way this is worst case using the Boldy and Caufield comps and that inflation. Worst case scenario.

Pegged the contract as about average of Boldy and Caufield. Feels like Mercer fits in there. With inflation of the cap looming they looks like $8M to me.
Even a Boeser/Konecny/Guentzel comparison is more like $5.5M-$6M AAV. So upping for inflation more like $7M
A $3M-$5M super team friendly deal would obviously be great. That's bring in a Toffoli level player extra money. I try to err conservatively.

Hellebuyck
If this gets done it's Vanacek (only cause devils can't afford both contracts) and a second round pick and no prospect.
Which is why I don't think it gets done when it it's where the front office wants to go.
They aren't trading for Connor Hellebuyck. People aren't slaves. The devils don't get to own him. They are trading for the $6M expiring contract of Connor Hellebuyck. Who will be a UFA and then by all indication want a raise to $9M-$10M. A goalie.
With those aspirations, Hellebuyck is almost certainly going to want to test free agency a year from now. So the only benefit of the trade is one year of service at a price that pins the team to the cap and forces them to roll 22 players on the roster.
If this was like the penguins or capitals, trying to get one last year or so out of the face of the franchise for a decade, maybe they would be tempted for the overpay.
I say let someone else overpay or let Winnipeg be Calgary next year losing all it's good players in free agency. Either works out better for the devils.
If they want to do 50% retained for a not first pick and a prospect I would be more interested. But that won't let them keep their pride. And honestly, someone probably is going to pay too much.

Secondly, why on earth would we want Samsonov?! He’s no upgrade on Vitek or Schmid.
Third, Minnesota has 8M in cap space what makes you think they don’t match an offer sheet?</div></div>
Obviously it would just be for the conditions of the second.
If you feel Swaymanis a first round pick better than Samsonov then you are entitled to that. They are within 1% of each other on save percentage and win percentage. I guess he is 2 years older and saved 6 goals less above expected in the regular season?
I imagine your $8m number for Minnisota came from the home page here? That's for a 16 man roster I think.
I took the lines off daily faceoff, made an armchair GM team and put Merrill, Lettering, and Swaney as their scratches leaving goalie #2 empty. I signed their other RFA's to their QOs. This is conservative as Duhaime has an arbitration case. This assumes he outright loses.
Cap Space: $3,368,079
I guess they could get an extra ~$1M running a 22 man roster but that is still only halfway to $8M.

Lot of talk here about the 1st not being enough.
If the devils trade san Jose to get back their second it would cost what? Their third and next year's second?
With our 2nd back for the amount of money you are offering in that contract to Swayman after you get his rights you could probably just offer sheet Swayman, Samsonov, or Gustavsson.
Swayman would be the hardest to get. They might match and pray Frederic doesn't win much in arbitration. The Wild don't have that much and leafs have negative that much money. They have to make a trade already and having to match that offer sheet would put them in a very low leverage position.
I'm also not a fan of the 22 man roster but that is besides the point.

As funny as it was that they had to play with a short roster last year I don't think so little of the rangers front office that they would carry 22. That's just wishful thinking. Glad you converted either way though. It was a good thought.
With a full 23 I had them at $2.2M actually. The site had them at $2.3. The difference was the healthy scratch defenseman. I had Pajuniemi and capfriendly lists Harpur. It's in the weeds either way. Forcing the Rangers to pay Lafreniere $2m+
