save the season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TerreriStepper</b></div><div>See this is where I'm curious about your thoughts regarding Lindy. To me, if we are talking about Seig and Hamilton of last season (which I believe is who they are, I just cannot accept that they forgot how to play defense), then I'd agree. Even with one additional dman you could run out
Seig - Nemec
L Hughes - Marino
Grzelcyk - Hamilton
Bahl
At their peak guys like Seigenthaler and Marino were able to carry that. Currently though they don't quite seem there. To me I tie that in with many players regressing, which I further tie into the coaching.
Even then, with the amount that L Hughes and Nemec need, if the goal were to go all in, I'd be tempted to add a higher end player just for that top pairing. Even one year from now, L Hughes + Marino may be that, but if we are going "all in" on this season? I'd say you'd need someone a bit more established.
That said, I generally agree with you.</div></div>
I think Lindy should be fired ASAP.
Seems like he wants the devils to play a much less controlled game. Instead of holding the puck, fire it into the general area of the front of the net. Less skating involved (which is our strength). I also hate the stupid power play drop pass more than anything. The only thing that makes it even remotely viable is Jack and Bratt’s ridiculous talent. But having 4 of our guys and 4 of their guys all lined up on the blueline and hoping Jack or Bratt can find a way through is dumb. And stops everyone else from moving while they wait at the blueline.

save the season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TerreriStepper</b></div><div>Yah that makes sense also. my thinking with Tanev was to add a shutdown guy responsible enough to play a first pairing and help get a handle on the mistakes rookies like Hughes will make. Otherwise it's hard to assemble a proper first pair. I think if we could tie L Hughes and Nemec to solid responsble guys, add in a guy like Hamilton to feast on third pairing competition, while cycling in the remaining Seigs, Marino, Miller types, all while playing a more disciplined defensive game, then - while perhaps not world beating - you'd still have a "strong enough" defensive unit, playing in front of a high end goaltender. Together, my thought is that this would be able to weather the storm, enough to allow our world-beating offense to do it's thing. If Ulmark hits his stride, the defense can focus on minimizing mistakes and nailing their coverage, then I think the offense could carry us quite far.
If you imagine this roster a little bit into the future, with a more mature L Hughes and Nemec, I would call them contenders. I would call the defense one of their strengths. The tricky part is their current inexperience.</div></div>
I like miller enough
Hughes,Nemec,Veteran Quality LD,Marino,Bahl,Miller (Bahl+Miller replaced by Siegs and Hamilton come playoff time)
But our PK is lacking, especially without McLeod who was our best in that area.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TerreriStepper</b></div><div>Yah, I mean. In a playoff context, that is an amazing forward core, a elite top six and a great bottom six to boot. Also great goaltending. But the defense is still shaky (they'll be great in time, L Hughes and S Nemec will be studs, but for now they are still very young). My goal was to at least buttress that up with two solid shutdown guys. Then, if Hamilton comes back, with Seigs, it's actually not bad depth wise, it's just lacking maturity in the top four. But could the massive improvement in goaltending help that, and ultimately allow the offense to lead the way?
Depends. I'd prefer if all of this happened with a different coach. Once Nemec and L Hughes fully develop though, I could see this being a contender all the way.</div></div>
It would be something…and at least another trip to 2nd round would help development of young guys.

If healthy going in with that Dcore, goaltending I can trust, and the forwards. I’d pick us over any team in the east.

Yeah if someone offers you a 1st I’d have to think NJD taps out and says thanks for the consideration, and if that offer is out there I would take it as Anaheim.
Depending on the situation and what other moves are in store NJD might be able to swing the balance over a similar offer slightly by needing less/no retention

The open question is pretty simple. Boston has found a formula that is very successful and frankly I could see them just run it back next year as well. I think they are showing that the fears about their center position were overblown.
That said, a deal for a young center / winger might be interesting

Two Trades
Beyond the logistics of the trade, if Ullmark were traded in-conference, which is far less of an issue than in-division, I would prefer him to Jersey than elsewhere. I have the least issues with Jersey of any Eastern conference team (I refuse to have a 2nd favorite team, just degrees of dislike being less for some teams than others lol), so it would be easiest to see him succeed with them if or when he's moved

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vancity2196</b></div><div>I think NJ would keep Toffoli.</div></div>
I think it depends how they look at the TDL. If they are out of a PO spot toffoli is most likely moveable as he is a ufa and probably gets around 6-7 mill. Kuzemko gives them an extra year at a cheaper contract with less commitment than toffoli’s extension.
Especially with mercer and holtz coming up they might not want to commit to an older winger again like they did with palat

Desmith wouldnt be traded for a 3rd because then Van doesnt have a back up goalie obviously lol.

Toffoli is a better all around player the Kuzemko. Vanecek hasn’t performed as well as demko but you can really slot anyone behind demko and be okay for the most part as demko can play 60 games.
Personally I think this is a pretty solid deal.

Take this team serious and make a push NOW
You know a trade is around fair value when it really makes u think about it
thats acc one of the better Ullmark to NJD trades ive seen:
Ullmarks only got the 1.5 years remaining on his deal
Holtz is a huge piece for BOS
taking retained Vanecek back to help make the cap work makes sense (although it makes Bostons goalie situation much worse)
3rd is a decent throw in
there are some concerns with that deal (as there always is), but its definitely not heavily favouring one side
Bruins have Pasta and (hopefully) Lysell to fill the top 2RW slots for the long run, so perhaps if Bruins look to trade a goalie, they target someone other than Holtz to help with the top 6

Take this team serious and make a push NOW
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TerreriStepper</b></div><div>Here's another way to look at it: if the picks + VV dump didn't work, if the Panthers, Wild, and Preds all balked, what would your next offer be? Or what if the Oilers and Canes start a bidding war? Like, how high would you be willing to go to get a goalie, in lieu of just standing pat? I used to be way more conservative about this, but lately I'm more convinced that we need to do something, and fairly soon. I suppose it isn't the worst thing in the world to punt on this season in the hopes that Nico Daws can be a sort of stop gap guy, after all they will get a lot of maturation from L Hughes and Nemec so that alone will improve the team... But even that is pushing it, and I really do balk at the idea of this team missing the playoffs after last years historic run and the expectations that fans rightfully have after 10 years of building.
Like you said, I can't claim to have an idea what goes on in these GM's offices. But I hope we can expect something soon. I'd hate to see this current iteration of the team wasted on something like poor goaltending. It seems like a sin, and yet, we've seen it happen to others...</div></div>
Personally I have like 15 guys I’d be open to. I’d see the market. If absolutely nobody can be had at a reasonable price that I initially offered, then I’d see what the prices are. Either take the most reasonable one or go through each guy from my top target down to my last improving each of my initial offer slightly. I’d still no then repeat with another increase.
If the goalie market turns out to be ridiculous like some claim, I’d reluctantly pay it.

Toffoli wouldn’t be to chi.
No retention on both Mrazek and Dickinson.
I value Mrazek at 3 mill Dickinson at 4 mill. I’d say both of those are quite generous estimations. So I’m paying a 2nd for 2 players worth 7 million making 7.5 million dollars.

I’d offer 1st+2nd+Vanacek+Clarke if it came down to it. Hopefully less, maybe a tiny bit higher. But 3 years of relatively cheap play on a guy I like.
1st+3rd in value to get Gus
3rd+Clarke to dump Vanacek
(I’m valuing a 2nd=3rd+3rd in this to show the split of value)
Most of my offers for goalies will center around a 1st+dumping vanacek+ secondary pieces depending on the goalies age/cap/skill

Spencer Knight is why Florida could trade Stolarz. Imo he’s gotta come back to the show at some point instead of wasting away in the AHL. And then it’s either run 3 goalies, trade Stolarz or waive him for nothing.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TerreriStepper</b></div><div>Well I posted my previous response before seeing this. My points about Gibson remain. Some of your other proposals, I think the other teams balk, they will find other buyers willing to give up more.
I do agree that guys like Knight are prime targets, but what is your trade proposal for him? It's going to cost a lot I'd imagine. They don't need to trade him.
One team you didn't mention is Nashville. I think between Saros and Askarov, something's got to give. They are good enough to be competing for the playoffs but obviously have needs. Interestingly, they seem to be keen on retaining Saros (wouldn't be my move if I were them, but whatever), so perhaps a move for Askarov could be in the books? We have the pieces ....</div></div>
I’d be down to go after Askarov long term option alongside a Mrazek stopgap. But no idea if he’d hit the market. and prospect/younger goalies are way harder to gauge value on.
Knight is so difficult to judge.
He’s played in the past at a quality NHL level, still just 22, boatloads of potential.
But he’s also in the AHL right now on a win now team, is likely stuck behind Bob, and has a pretty hefty cap hit for a backup.
I’d offer a 1st+3rd. Maybe that’s way too high, maybe not enough, maybe just right. Just so many factors surrounding knight

I also might just be off on my evaluation but I’ve watched a lot of both goalies over the past couple years(watched a lot of goalie play lately for obvious reasons) and I just feel like I’d rather have Gus.
