<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dgibb10</b></div><div>I think Lindy should be fired ASAP.
Seems like he wants the devils to play a much less controlled game. Instead of holding the puck, fire it into the general area of the front of the net. Less skating involved (which is our strength). I also hate the stupid power play drop pass more than anything. The only thing that makes it even remotely viable is Jack and Bratt’s ridiculous talent. But having 4 of our guys and 4 of their guys all lined up on the blueline and hoping Jack or Bratt can find a way through is dumb. And stops everyone else from moving while they wait at the blueline.</div></div>
From your lips to God's ears, brother. That's why I am tempted to say that if we address goaltending in a big way, plus maybe some depth here and there, then any coach worth his salt should be able to make that team a contender. There is just too much talent.

See this is where I'm curious about your thoughts regarding Lindy. To me, if we are talking about Seig and Hamilton of last season (which I believe is who they are, I just cannot accept that they forgot how to play defense), then I'd agree. Even with one additional dman you could run out
Seig - Nemec
L Hughes - Marino
Grzelcyk - Hamilton
Bahl
At their peak guys like Seigenthaler and Marino were able to carry that. Currently though they don't quite seem there. To me I tie that in with many players regressing, which I further tie into the coaching.
Even then, with the amount that L Hughes and Nemec need, if the goal were to go all in, I'd be tempted to add a higher end player just for that top pairing. Even one year from now, L Hughes + Marino may be that, but if we are going "all in" on this season? I'd say you'd need someone a bit more established.
That said, I generally agree with you.

Jake Evans, Trenin come to mind</div></div>
Yah that makes sense also. my thinking with Tanev was to add a shutdown guy responsible enough to play a first pairing and help get a handle on the mistakes rookies like Hughes will make. Otherwise it's hard to assemble a proper first pair. I think if we could tie L Hughes and Nemec to solid responsble guys, add in a guy like Hamilton to feast on third pairing competition, while cycling in the remaining Seigs, Marino, Miller types, all while playing a more disciplined defensive game, then - while perhaps not world beating - you'd still have a "strong enough" defensive unit, playing in front of a high end goaltender. Together, my thought is that this would be able to weather the storm, enough to allow our world-beating offense to do it's thing. If Ulmark hits his stride, the defense can focus on minimizing mistakes and nailing their coverage, then I think the offense could carry us quite far.
If you imagine this roster a little bit into the future, with a more mature L Hughes and Nemec, I would call them contenders. I would call the defense one of their strengths. The tricky part is their current inexperience.

Yah, I mean. In a playoff context, that is an amazing forward core, a elite top six and a great bottom six to boot. Also great goaltending. But the defense is still shaky (they'll be great in time, L Hughes and S Nemec will be studs, but for now they are still very young). My goal was to at least buttress that up with two solid shutdown guys. Then, if Hamilton comes back, with Seigs, it's actually not bad depth wise, it's just lacking maturity in the top four. But could the massive improvement in goaltending help that, and ultimately allow the offense to lead the way?
Depends. I'd prefer if all of this happened with a different coach. Once Nemec and L Hughes fully develop though, I could see this being a contender all the way.

yah that's fair, this was mostly for fun. I was basing it off some other trade proposals I've seen Boston making on here. The thought being that you would be freeing up 7 million or so in additional cap space, while also gaining a 1'st and 3rd, which could be bundled up with some other assets to make a big trade, maybe for a guy like Chychrun or something. Schmid is obviously a downgrade but an acceptable backup, and if you prefer an in house backup would still likely be worth something to another team as a trade chip. We could also put Toffoli in the mix?
But yah I hear you, I don't expect Boston to make any moves like this. Maybe in the offseason? Cheers

Cap space is easily manufactured for competing teams looking to win right now. Other teams will take bad contracts off the books for stray picks. Virtually everyone will tell you that the goalie market is absurd right now.
But, again, virtually everyone will tell you many things, and they don't all turn out to be true. I'm looking forward to revisiting this after the trade deadline! We'll see who was right and who was wrong.

In all honesty, I look forward to seeing whether your predictions come true, given that you've staked your entire position on it. If you are correct, then modern hockey writers are garbage. And if that is the determinative factor, I'd wager you are probably correct...

My thinking was that if VAN wanted to add some top six talent for a run, they would be willing to move what is essentially a backup goalie on a rental contract. Especially if they could get a decent replacement in Vanacek.
But I can also see the logic of just staying pat. The way Vancouver has been this year, I'm tempted to say, if it isn't broke, don't fix it... But it's also something of an anomaly for them, and even with their success I wonder how far into the playoffs they can really go. Again though I wouldn't fault them for just keeping the band together.
(obviously Kuzmenko was just a side part to facilitate the DeSmith deal, I don't think any team is going to make a player-for-player trade for him, though maybe someone would take a risk on him for a 3rd or something, if Van was willing to retain).
Thanks!

And if that happens, we reap the rewards. I'm not suggesting to make the trade now, I'm trying to see if it is a possibility, to canvass all of our options.
What if the deadline comes and none of the options that you are suggesting (ie the goalies you listed for a 3rd) are available? In that event, where it's the option I am presenting vs standing pat, what do you do then?
Again, I'm casting these nets to get a sense of all of the options available to us. Also, by February, a lot of games will have passed, we could be out of a playoff spot. I'm not necessarily taking a stand one way or another but it's worth considering all facets, including what it would take to salvage this season and make the playoffs.

As I said, if we can get a guy comparable to DeSmith for a 3rd, then pull the trigger. This is the backup plan if that doesn't work out. Everything I have read is that the goalie market is fairly absurd. Now, that doesn't mean anything exactly, and these writers frequently get things wrong.
But again, as I already said multiple times: I'm just trying to to get a sense of how VAN would respond to this, and consider how it would work out on both sides. If there is a way to get a comparable goalie for something as easy as a mid round pick, go for it. I haven't seen anything on this site that suggests that it is possible though.
I guess time will tell!

Again, the retention from VV is based on a third party team handling it, for some late round pick. Thus, when VAN retains, it isn't a hit, it's just a wash. Meanwhile for us, we get that extra 1 mil off of Kuzy's salary. So it doesn't hurt Vancouver at all, but does help NJ because it helps facilitate the deal. Win / Win, in that sccenario. From the Devils side, that is the point of this, to alleviate next years cap hit. it isn't counterintuitive at all!
And TT retention is for this year, where we have cap space due to LTIR anyway.

Backup goalies, no matter how they’ve been playing, go for mid round picks historically</div></div>
It isn't about what is available historically, it's about the market right now. I've already posed questions you haven't answered: why does Vancouver do this? Just because it's more than what they gave? So what? And who replaces DeSmith?? They still need a backup. Why would a team that is looking to make a serious run give up a good backup goalie for a 3rd? You can't just look at past actions, you have to look at why this would make sense for the other team.

Yah of course, you can ignore the salary retention stuff. I should have been more clear. The retention on Kuzy is based on the idea that we run this trade through a 3rd party team (I mention Chicago) to have them retain the same 1 mil on VV. Both Kuzy and VV have 1 more year after this, so for you guys, the retention is basically a wash. It's just a way to help the devils deal with the cap hit of Kuzy next year. I tried to design it in a way that wouldn't really hurt Vancouver.
But yes, I'd take what you are offering. I'm mostly looking at the overall trade, so fine to put aside the retention aspects of it.

Fair enough, but why? In TT you get a guy on a 30 goal pace vs a guy with a higher cap hit who may not even hit 20 goals by the seasons end and has another year on his contract, at which point he becomes a UFA anyway? My understanding was that Nucks fans were souring on that deal. If not, then my bad.
Regarding DeSmith, I get it he is a good backup, and if you think Toffoli is not an improvement over Kuzmenko than I guess it wouldn't make sense. But it seems TT is a clear improvement, meanwhile there isn't that much of a drop-off between DeSmith and VV, in the sense that we are talking about a backup goalie, who probably won't be playing in the playoffs or anything.
But I appreciate the feedback, as that's what I wanted: a sense of whether DeSmith is available (Kuzmenko I see as almost a liability to take on)

Here's another way to look at it: if the picks + VV dump didn't work, if the Panthers, Wild, and Preds all balked, what would your next offer be? Or what if the Oilers and Canes start a bidding war? Like, how high would you be willing to go to get a goalie, in lieu of just standing pat? I used to be way more conservative about this, but lately I'm more convinced that we need to do something, and fairly soon. I suppose it isn't the worst thing in the world to punt on this season in the hopes that Nico Daws can be a sort of stop gap guy, after all they will get a lot of maturation from L Hughes and Nemec so that alone will improve the team... But even that is pushing it, and I really do balk at the idea of this team missing the playoffs after last years historic run and the expectations that fans rightfully have after 10 years of building.
Like you said, I can't claim to have an idea what goes on in these GM's offices. But I hope we can expect something soon. I'd hate to see this current iteration of the team wasted on something like poor goaltending. It seems like a sin, and yet, we've seen it happen to others...

OK, well, I admit that is pretty sound. I'm on the Gustavsson train if you think it's possible at the price point you are quoting. How realistic do you think it is though? I guess your logic makes enough sense, with Wallstedt, and the overall shape of that team, you can make the case for it. Have you seen much success here from Wild fans?
I think it's something like that, or something like Askarov or Knight... But I think you may be undervaluing those players. A lot of those teams don't have to make a trade, and again, there are more teams than just the Devils that need a goalie, and that has to drive up the asking price. What I like about Ullmark is that it is a known quantity, and possibly something we could have now at the (admittedly high) price point. I agree with your logic I am just not sure how realistic it is. Like you, I would prefer to give up picks and dump VV's contract, and I also think we really only need league average goaltending so we don't necessarily need vezina caliber guys (many SC winners have got there on average goalies).
It's tricky. I can definitely appreciate your insights though. From your lips to Fitzy's ears, brother.
