Well I posted my previous response before seeing this. My points about Gibson remain. Some of your other proposals, I think the other teams balk, they will find other buyers willing to give up more.

I do agree that guys like Knight are prime targets, but what is your trade proposal for him? It's going to cost a lot I'd imagine. They don't need to trade him.

One team you didn't mention is Nashville. I think between Saros and Askarov, something's got to give. They are good enough to be competing for the playoffs but obviously have needs. Interestingly, they seem to be keen on retaining Saros (wouldn't be my move if I were them, but whatever), so perhaps a move for Askarov could be in the books? We have the pieces ....

That’s an 18 goal difference. Imagine where we’d be with half a goal per game better goaltending. And he’s dirt cheap when they bring up knight and have to protect him from waivers.

Even if he plays net 0 goaltending that’s still a large upgrade.

Vanacek has been horrific I am not saying we don’t need a goalie. I’m saying there’s enough options out there that we don’t need to overpay for one.

Holtz is a part of the long term future. This is a long term plan.

OK Fair enough, those are good points. If we can get that, I'm game. I would *HATE* to lose Holtz, he is a gem of a player and the last thing you want to give up. But we are at the point where we need a proven solution in net.

Personally I still would not want Gibson at 4. They'd need to retain the full half. And that is still a HUGE overpayment. The problem with Gibson is that he may very well end up just as bad as what we have, only now we've given up all of our trade chips - then what?

The Stolarz stats are much more intriguing. What are we giving up for him, in your opinion?

In terms of goalie there’s a number of options.

I’d offer a 1st+2nd+Vanacek for Ullmark now. Not holtz and no retention.

Or I’d go after Filip Gustafsson with a bigger offer than for Ullmark.

Or jarry, Gibson retained, Markstrom retained, etc etc.

If legit starting goalies are not available at reasonable rates I move down.

Use the dougie LTIR space on a guy like Mrazek. Go after a Stolarz or a Nedjelkovic or a vejmelka.</div></div>

I'm just focusing on your goalie proposals here. If those actually move the needle for teams, and they go for it, great. Of course, bargain them down as much as you can. We certainly got Meier for less than what Sharks fans on here were projecting.

But overall I think you need to flesh out these ideas. A LOT. The way you describe it, this is some minor need, where we can bring in a guy like Ullmark for practically nothing and all is well. Goaltending is our #1 Achilles heal, it is a MAJOR issue, you'd have to be blind not to see that. You are claiming we can just throw some pennies on the sidewalk and pick up a decent goalie? Well I hope Edmonton and Carolina don't hear about this!

In truth, we desperately need a goalie in a market where there are many bidders and very few sellers. Again, clarify your points - How much are we giving up to get Gibson "retained"? How much retained? And will he really be enough of an improvement? How much for Stolarz? We are burning seasons here, with no clear solution in sight, and you seem very happy to mock everyone else's honest attempt at a solution.

Please, flesh out some actual solutions, what we are giving up, what we are getting, why the other team would accept that deal, what our fallback options are... And run your solutions through other teams fans to see if they would actually accept it - that's what this site is for! Anyone can say "well I'll give you Toffoli and a third for Sorokin", the challenge is crafting a real proposal that provides both teams with what they need. This is a critical issue for the Devils, it isn't something you can just handwave out of existence by naming a bunch of run-through goalies that we will apparently obtain for Christmas leftovers and picks.

Thinking about it a bit more, if we're at the table and the clock is running down, and the deal is Holtz + 2nd for Ullmark take it or leave it, I'd probably pull the trigger. We'd still have a 1st and 3rd to work with, and I have to imagine some creative GM work could shuffle Vitek around without costing too much.

The thing Devils fans need to get is that, with Ullmark, we are getting way more than league average goaltending; we're getting a high end, established goaltender that may even be able to paper over some of our defensive deficiencies (at least to an extent). With him, we may not need a Hanifin of Chychrun, maybe just shore up the defense with a Tanev or something and call it a day. With the offensive power we have, Ullmark could very well be the missing piece that gives us two very solid swings at contention - and to me, that's how the devils have to start thinking. It allows us to compete in the immediate term and buy some time to figure the long term goaltending situation. All of this is better than just sticking with the status quo, where we score 5 goals but let in 6, and end up missing the playoffs (with no clear solution for next season either!)

It hurts to give up a guy like Holtz, but it may be the type of gamble you make if you want to reach that next level. Curious to know your thoughts, coming from a team that has been a perennial contender. Always respect the Bruins, they have been relevant for longer than any team I can recall, always in the mix, seemingly never rebuilding.

The pleasure's all mine, I love brainstorming these things with fans of other teams. It's obviously just for fun, not like the GM's are listening! It's a fun exercise though to see how a deal could be reached that would at least nominally benefit both sides. To me this seems so close.

I'd happily do Holtz + 2nd, done and dusted, provided it is this season and before the trade deadline. I think where it gets tricky, though, is that we then need to move Vitek, just for cap reasons, so that would be another pick to surrender to a team like San Jose or Anaheim to take that contract. Then we need to find another rental to replace Holtz, and meanwhile we probably should shore up our defense with an additional piece, just to make this whole run worth the while... My thinking was that, with Ullmark, we could salvage the season and make a playoff run, and then next season we'd have the whole package and really make a serious run for it. There are probably moves that can be made though, I just can't visualize it at the moment.

I'd still prefer any of the above to Gibson, fwiw

Yah that makes sense. Interestingly, the Devils GM has stated before that he doesn't really make goalie trades in-season. But I think that is the problem - this is a move that only makes sense in season, when it could salvage the current season and then be built upon next season. As odd as it might seem, I think this trade evaporates the minute it becomes an offseason deal. At that point you are acquiring a rental for one season. Still worth pursuing, but not at the expense of a player like Holtz. Maybe a first and some minor prospect?

Bummer though, at first this seemed like an exciting trade possibility. But I definitely appreciate the feedback, that was the whole point of the post. File another one under "too good to be true"

Thanks, that was what I was going for - it seems like something could be brewing here that would actually work out for both teams. Nothing is ever perfect, but all things considered, my thinking was that it would be a net positive for both teams. Then again, perhaps those final details are what would end up torpedoing the whole thing. Shame though, I'd really hope something could be worked out.

All valid points, I appreciate the feedback. It does seem like Holtz + 2nd is the formula most B's fans agree upon. It's tricky though, because the Devils would need to fit all this into their cap and then find another destination for Vitek, and then would have that much less leftover to compensate for the loss of Holtz.

I just hate to give up on this trade concept, as it seems like these teams could make a mutually beneficial trade. Again, appreciate the feedback, curious if you can imagine any creative options that would seal the deal (I'm drawing a blank haha)...

Well the point is he brings offensive production and can be had at little cost to us in the next two years, during which we could afford such a contract. Sharangovich - Haula - Palat is ok I guess, but it returns us to a very mediocre bottom six that doesn't generate much production.

As I said, I get where you are coming from. But these things go both ways. If you just return with what you had in net and on the bottom six, minus tatar, who is filling those spots? More rookies?

Bratt - Hughes - Mercer
Meier - Hischier - Palat/Holtz?
Sharangovich - Haula - Palat/Holtz?
Boqvist - Mcleod - Bastian

That's a very so-so bottom six. and it relies on Holtz taking the next step, otherwise, that RW side - woof. I'm not even sure who takes the spot. And I'm not sure that Palat should be a shoe-in for a top six role as is. And in your hypo, are we returning with Schmid / Vanacek? I'm not dead set against it, actually I'm rooting for him to be that guy, but if he isn't, again - woof.

Now that the team is in their competitive window, every year will count. Especially while Luke and Nemec are on ELC's. It can't just be year over year of waiting out.

Very interesting feedback! As for Blackwood, I don't think he will be able to command much at all. He's a great candidate for a backup but doesn't really have any leverage so that was my thinking - give you guys a solid backup option that will also come in cheap and has upside.

If Sharangovich were substituted for say Boqvist, and the 3rd was changed to a 2nd, would that still work? If not, what do you think it would take if something else needed to be subbed for Sharangovich?

And yah I did see his comments. But then again, you never know with the way these guys address the media. He may be open to the idea of coming to a contender at this point in his career especially if the goal was to make a run for it here and now. And the cap space plus some assets could give the canucks some breathing room and a chance to regroup.

The point of the exercise was to push the chips in for the next two years. Whether or not it is advisable is up for debate. But it isn't that crazy either. As to why make the move for brock, he is an upgrade over sharangovich and more specifically, adds some scoring production to the bottom six, which I think is important. I don't think we're giving up all that much to be honest.

It's rolling the dice somewhat, but in sports sometimes you need to do that. And with how this team is constructed, nothing I'm describing would be all that detrimental to our future, as we have still have a great core for years to come. But looking at that lineup - forwards, defense, and goaltending - it seems to be a contender on paper at least.

I mean, add/substitute within reason. I'll throw in a 24 2nd maybe. But the centerpiece is Holtz &amp; 23 1st. Those are two big pieces and I'm not sure who is going to top it.

EDIT - updated it a bit. Added a 24' 2nd instead of the 4th, included Stillman. Probably not a huge difference, but again, a 7'th overall (with connection to Eklund), a 1st in a deep draft, and two solid prospects (Stillman was a 1st round pick, Walsh has decent NHL potential), and a second round pick, is pretty good overall. Meier is obviously going to attract plenty of attention but his contract will limit the potential buyers. I'm trying to be fair.
