Another Meier deal

Created by: TerreriStepper
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 26, 2023
Published: Jan. 27, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Graves gets extra cash vs term because we can't go past the 3 year mark given the need to extend L Hughs and Nemec (just two years or so until Palat and Hamilton get off the books). But he makes a pretty similar amount he would otherwise, give or take, plus gets to keep his family in the same place for the next 3 years and play for a competitor.

Is that a 23 TDL deal for Rico, or an off-season deal?

Off-season (preferably around the draft though, otherwise if a pure 24 TDL rental then the offer may go down a piece or two. But that's nit picking.)

The value is okay, but we would rather get a better prospect in place of Walsh and Smith

I mean, add/substitute within reason. I'll throw in a 24 2nd maybe. But the centerpiece is Holtz & 23 1st. Those are two big pieces and I'm not sure who is going to top it.

EDIT - updated it a bit. Added a 24' 2nd instead of the 4th, included Stillman. Probably not a huge difference, but again, a 7'th overall (with connection to Eklund), a 1st in a deep draft, and two solid prospects (Stillman was a 1st round pick, Walsh has decent NHL potential), and a second round pick, is pretty good overall. Meier is obviously going to attract plenty of attention but his contract will limit the potential buyers. I'm trying to be fair.

Yeah I get it. Really just hinges on what the sharks see Holtz as going forward. Him being healthy scratched all year doesnt make me super confident but I did like him draft year

I'd take it. Walsh is a pretty good piece if not great. Holtz opposite Eklund for the next ten years is a very tempting thought. Sharks are slim on contracts spots though so maybe subtract Stillman.

I don't like any of the moves here.

Meier is fantastic but the trade you suggest here is an unprecedented overpayment for a guy like him, to say nothing of the 10m QO poison pill attached.
There are hardly any comparables that would put Meier's return anywhere north of Holtz + 2nd rd pick.

As much as I love Rico, I don't see the point in throwing a guy like Shakir away for one year of an aging 3C.
Would much rather just keep the assets and play Boqvist as 3C.

Signing Graves to that contract is really not a good idea, there are plenty of equivalent LHD that can be had in FA for roughly half that amount (Gustafsson, Walman, Orlov to name a few).

I am of the believe that any package that includes Holtz is not offered by NJD. The picks and other pieces, sure, if that is what they want.

But in terms of prospects....Hughes, Nemec, Holtz aren't going anywhere.
