<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TampaBayLightning22</b></div><div>Detroit passes, You're not getting rid of Sean Monahan without at least attaching a 3rd round pick to him. He's coming back from double hip surgeries in consecutive years his value isn't that high right now.
And you're not getting Filip Forsberg any cheaper than the Matthew Tkachuk deal Forsberg will cost at least $9,500,000 x 7 years on the open market. He wants more than $8,000,000 per to remain in Nashville he's not taking less from Calgary.</div></div>
My sarcasm here is that Monahan is still a good player. He’s going to come back healthier and stronger than the past 2 years have shown. And a team that plays him in the Top 6 will increase his value substantially from today’s level.
+ “We shall see”: I don’t think CGY is going to add picks to “dump his cap”, in spite of Capfriendly popular opinion.
+ The Forsberg AAV comment could well be true. He could end up starting with a 9, but my hope here is that Team Sweden (aka Calgary Flames) is an interesting landing spot for him, assuming Johnny gets a bigger bag elsewhere.

Not a lot more, but definitely more.
This offer is the equivalent of: 1st + 1st (Zary) + 2nd (Dube) + 2nd (Valimaki) + 2nd
VAN gets 2 young players for the active roster, plus Connor Zary. A very young package, plus 2 extra picks. And for a guy who only has 1 year term left. I think it would be subject to Miller signing an extension with CGY, but this is a great package for where VAN is currently in their build for a playoff team.

That D core ain’t bad at all.
Overpay for Forsberg IMO. I think he’ll end up around $8-8.5M x 7 years. But that doesn’t change what you’re presenting here — just adds another $1-1.5M in cap space to this team. I’d certainly be interested in signing with CAR if I was Forsberg.

Monahan is not dead. And not dead cap. Everyone thinks CGY will have to pay to move him, but that’s not the case. CGY isn’t doing this deal.
I’m also going to go out on a limb here and suggest there’s no chance Letang is signing a 2-year deal in BUF of all places. If he leaves PIT, it will be for a 4-year deal to a team that might make playoffs. BUF isn’t that destination yet.

We were discussing CGY trading Monahan / Dube and the valuation of those specific players. Not about the Gaudreau or Tkachuk situations, or any UFA/RFA for that matter.
But on that note:
Yes, there’s above a 0% chance that Gaudreau goes to UFA and finds a higher AAV than CGY offers and he signs elsewhere. But there’s also a high chance that he stays with CGY.
+ Yes there’s above a 0% chance that Tkachuk signs his QO for $9M x 1 year and then leaves CGY. But there’s also a high chance that he stays with CGY.
That’s how UFA/RFA works. Players earn the right to decide.
As someone who closely follows CGY, and based on the progress of these two players and the progress of the team, I think that it’s above 50% chance that they stay. And CGY can make the money work with 1-2 trades.

When the Flames trade Monahan, let’s come back to this. Monahan + Dube for a 7th….good heavens.
There are plenty of teams with cap space who would be delighted to pickup Monahan, retain 50% (for one year, not multiple years), and flip him to a playoff team for a 3rd rounder and more.
Monahan and Dube for a 7th. Good grief.

Not at all desperate to trade Tkachuk. He’s a rare major impact player. Just looking at some creative options here.
Seems like by this post and other Flames post, they are getting desperate to trade Tkachuk as it looks like he may be gone as a UFA in 2023.</div></div>

I’d like to see Zadorov with Tanev. I think they would pair pretty well and be really tough to play against. Zadorov is better at moving the puck up ice than a lot of people give him credit for. And a better skater than most credit him for.

I have a very difficult time seeing Jarnkrok signed for almost double what Mangiapane signs for in this post. Will be, and should be, the other way around. And Mangiapane will almost certainly come in for $4-5.5M range, depending on term.

Could see Treliving pushing hard for a Toffoli contract for Mang. They are linemates + Toffoli put up a number of 20+ goal seasons before he signed that deal. $4.25M x 3+ years would work well for CGY, of course.
Bjorkstrand also had more scoring under his belt before getting that $5.4M. It will definitely be used as a comparable this summer. Fingers crossed Treliving gets Mang extended for 3+ years at a good price.

Keeping the gang together
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>"Keeping the gang together". Well you didn't. Doubt if Lucic is going to waive to lousy team in what might be his final NHL season. And why would teams trade for Monahan? Best thing for the Flames, cap wise, is Monahan stays on LTIR for an extended period.</div></div>
Treliving has said with Monahan’s surgery ASAP that he will have plenty of time to get healthy before next season. So a long stint on LTIR won’t last into next season.
That said, I think everyone who believes that no teams in the league would pay to acquire Monahan are wrong. He’s a low risk reclamation project worth the gamble. CGY needs to move his contract to keep Gaudreau and Tkachuk going forward, especially if all UFA/RFA players are signed with reasonable (ie. Smart) term.
I think Monahan for a 3rd round pick to take him and his salary is a reasonable deal. And I think we’ll find out this summer what Treliving is able to pull off on that trade. I could be wrong and CGY gets pinched to move him, but I’m leaning towards CGY getting something back.
Maybe destinations: CLB, BOS, ANA (acquire, help him score a bit, then eat salary and trade to contender at TDL for asset), etc.
Who knows. All I know is that CGY isn’t going to let Gaudreau or Tkachuk leave. It can be done.

OTT would need to add a 2nd rounder to that deal, and even then, I don’t think Treliving would do that deal during the season. Off-season — probably worth considering.

I would bet $10 that Monahan could find 30 goals playing with Kyrou and Thomas. He’s putting up solid PPP when he’s on the ice with CGY’s best players on the man advantage.
He’s not a good enough skater to drive play on his own in the bottom 6, and that’s a big reason his production has fallen off a cliff.

Agreed.
JT Miller is the answer for me.
Giroux would be a great fit, but I’d rather pay for Miller than Giroux.
Hertl would be a good fit, but I’d rather pay for Miller.
Scheifele probably isn’t actually available.
Who are your top targets for CGY? Treliving has to do something after losing out on Eichel, who returns to VGK’s lineup soon. CGY has the cap space, has assets to work with, has real needs, and has a great system going with Sutter. Have to add, and have to add something big.

Disregard the NTCs
There’s like 5 first round picks worth of value in this deal before you even consider Monahan and Backlund value.
Valimaki, Pelletier, Wolf are all worth a 1st. Then you’ve got 2 more 1st rounders. Then Monahan, Backlund, and a 2nd chucked in.
Way too much here. And by doing this, you’re pushing Kylington down to 3rd pairing duty, when he’s shown he deserves top 4 minutes.
Not the right deal for CGY. And yes, that’s without considering the NTCs.

That’s a very underwhelming package going back to VGK for those calibre of players. VGK could get quite a bit more back, especially if they traded each guy individually. That said, I agree with the above — highly unlikely VGK is thinking about trading Stephenson anytime soon.
