There might have been a center need before the Jackets decided to extend Roslovic, but they're pretty set for the year now with Rosy, Boone, Sillinger, Kuraly, Johnson and Danforth able to play there. If picks and Tex are on the table now it would be for a clear 1C that they could lock up for at least 6-7 years.

I agree, that's way too much for Columbus to pay.

Dube for Texier is pretty close, Monahan is worth at least the 3rd and 6th. Valimaki is worth more than a 2nd but the 2nd is probably early so it's likely not far off. I understand Columbus not wanting to do the trade but it's not a good trade for Calgary either

With so many teams needing to dump cap and so few buyers, a closer deal would be Monahan and Dube for a 7th. And you gotta find a team that M NTC would waive for

When the Flames trade Monahan, let’s come back to this. Monahan + Dube for a 7th….good heavens.

There are plenty of teams with cap space who would be delighted to pickup Monahan, retain 50% (for one year, not multiple years), and flip him to a playoff team for a 3rd rounder and more.

Monahan and Dube for a 7th. Good grief.

Sorry you don't appreciate the NHL cap situation. Teams in this case the Columbus could spend 6m on a UFA, instead of Monahan. Think you're dreaming that teams would be delighted to pickup Monahan.

Like I said — we can revisit this after Treliving has trade Monahan.

OK. And we can revisit when Gaudreau leaves as UFA and Tkachuk doesn't resign with Flames and likely is UFA in summer of 2023.

Hard to see this trade working out.

I see the idea and it could work if CBJ want to have Johnson and Chinakov in the AHL and bet on Monahan in the interim. The problem is that it's a marketplace and they might as well go for someone else who could serve the same purpose at the cap hit.

CBJ would prefer Zadorov (if he's available at the right price in FA) or Gudbranson because they may want size/stability and or punching over Valimaki's potential. We have Bean at a similar spot right now, Carlsson and Christiansen looking fringe, and Svozil and Knazko coming in a couple of years on the left side. Personally, I'd just stick with Carlsson.

Dube seems pretty good, but I don't know that I see the swap for Texier. I think Calgary will be pretty dissapointed in him as a C, he hasn't looked good there for CBJ. He likes to slow the game down a lot, and I liked it a bit, but he needs a lot more time to adjust as his execution wasn't flawless or dangerous. It's possible that Calgary's teammates or system will simply work better as it seemed like he didn't have a lot of support or chemistry until put in a different role in Columbus.

Neither of those are "likely" at all.

Thinking it costs assets let alone a good middle 6 NHLer like Dube to move Monahan is asinine. It didn't cost Vegas anything to move Nate Schmidt when there were otherwise literally illegally over the offseason 10% buffer.

Tex isn’t on the board for this. I’d be willing to offer a 4th to CGY to grant them cap relief and take on the ghost of Monahan.

And I know, “but he could be flipped for picks!”

That’s contingent on Monahan (a) regaining his form from three years ago; (b) not getting injured; and, (c) someone willing to take on his cap hit, even after retention. Been awhile since any of those three really seemed to be on the board for him.

Really not sure why I see so many CGY fans clinging onto Monahan as some extensively valuable trade piece, when his perception is more akin to an anchor.

Dube seems, idk, at best comparable to Tex? Either way, I’d rather have him. JK does nothing for us - we don’t need more LD.

"Neither are likely at all". Really? Gaudreau is just what three weeks from being a UFA. He and Calgary have had weeks after the regular season to sign a contract.

Ok and? Until he actually hits IFA he's still most likely to come back

Sorry for calling your comment out for not being realistic and hurting your feelings.

45000 posts on this site…!!! I’m sure some of them are going to be bad. This site has been live for 7 years. So you’re averaging 18 posts PER DAY, assuming you don’t take a day off (which it appears you don’t). For 7 straight years!

…Any teams reached out to hire you yet based on your hot takes? Might be time to take a vacation if not.

You didn't hurt my feelings. But I'm always amazed though that some many homer fans just can't imagine their own players leaving as UFAs, but think signing other teams UFAs are OK.

We were discussing CGY trading Monahan / Dube and the valuation of those specific players. Not about the Gaudreau or Tkachuk situations, or any UFA/RFA for that matter.

But on that note:

Yes, there’s above a 0% chance that Gaudreau goes to UFA and finds a higher AAV than CGY offers and he signs elsewhere. But there’s also a high chance that he stays with CGY.

+ Yes there’s above a 0% chance that Tkachuk signs his QO for $9M x 1 year and then leaves CGY. But there’s also a high chance that he stays with CGY.

That’s how UFA/RFA works. Players earn the right to decide.

As someone who closely follows CGY, and based on the progress of these two players and the progress of the team, I think that it’s above 50% chance that they stay. And CGY can make the money work with 1-2 trades.
