Revised JT Miller Deal
I think this is fair value for Miller. Hes gonna walk from Van at the end of next year. So instead of that happening they get younger cheaper top 6 guy + a good prospect + 1st and 2nd. Pens get an elite forward to play with Malkin

Not bad, but not enough...Poulin doesn;t look like a good bet, two years of retention and VAN adds a 4th?
Kapanen, Poulin and 2022 1st AND 2023 2nd for JT Miller and 2.6mil retention for 2 years is probably closer to the ask,
and if I'm PIT I have to think (with 4 of my top 7 forwards and my number 1 dman: Malkin, Carter, Letang, Rust, Rodriguez as UFAs and ZAR and all the depth guys) its close to a now or never season.

Maybe without the retention but definitely not retaining on Miller unless you're getting a ridiculous haul.

hmm, tough one, but I think I'd do it. I'd still prefer a Fiala type back. But with how the team is playing I think hes off the table.

Hypothetical Scenario - Discussion over Trade Values
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TraeYoung</b></div><div>Good points all around. I think people tend to ignore fits and team trends on here as well. For example, as a Pens fan, I know that any deal involving these guys has to have salary going the other way. Calgary almost traded for Jason Zucker a few years ago and he fits their fast forechecking system. Just an example of how that works</div></div>
Yes definitely, but I think youre undervaluing most of these CGY players.
As another poster said, look at what Ristolinen got Buffalo. In draft picks estimate: Tanev and his good contract I think gets a 1st and a 2nd, Lindholm gets 2 1sts and a bit more, Hanifan gets a late 1st and 3rd and Tkachuk, even as an expensive RFA gets 3-4 1sts in a second.

Hypothetical Scenario - Discussion over Trade Values
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TraeYoung</b></div><div>Yeah I think what makes this tough and part of why I’m asking it on the open forums is because these players, more so Tkachuk and Lindholm are quality assets, especially if they had salary retained for a contender.
Sometimes, it’s easier to ask what they’re worth in picks to get a value understanding there. So say Tanev is worth a 2nd, whether that’s true or not, then I know I can trade him for a 2nd or for a player that may also be worth that price. Tkachuk is interesting for me since he’d need to be resigned and most teams that’d want him couldn’t do say a 8x9.</div></div>
True, but equivalent players is easier than picks IMO.
Very hard to develop so many players at once and its difficult to see returns in trade for quality assets, and its no return for the fans to trade high level players now for futures 3 yrs down the line.
Hard to get equivalent, sometimes its just better fits or addressing multiple needs.
In the example above, tkachuk and hanifan would be the better of the two players, but they are all similar age and the key would be whether frost can fill a need a center and zamula could develop.
I would think that IF CGY moves any of those players: Hanifan is probably first and Tkachuk second, but Tanev and Lindholm are valuable assets on good contracts.
In seperate deals as mentioned above, marner and sanheim are not equivalent replacements, but the addition of say a Frost and Zamula (if they develop) builds a better team. Any of those CGY players are worth a lot in trade

Much like the assets the Leafs have, they are worth more individually then as a package.
Elias Lindholm would fetch an incredible package. Imagine him with a team like the Avalanche.
Based off of last season, Tanev would fetch a solid package as well.
I just don't know about Hanafin... He reminds me of Kotkaniemi in that he is a real good player, but just can't seem to find his role.
Tkachuk I am not touching on as on this site you can propose a realistic trade and you will have people jumping all over you either way that he's not worth Zemgus Girgensons or he is worth Auston Matthews.

Hypothetical Scenario - Discussion over Trade Values
I would think Tanev is probably the first one to be moved in this situation due to his relatively high market value and low likelihood of being involved in the long-term picture for the franchise. He's been one of the most efficient defensive defensemen in the last two seasons on a team-friendly rate for his services, can play top-pairing minutes, on a reasonable deal for the next two years after this season, and his right-shot status would boost his trade value. The return would probably be a 1st rounder and a C-level prospect or a couple of mid-round picks attached to a B-level prospect to a team in need of a second pairing or first pairing d-man like the Flyers (has the prospect pool to make the former work and the only RHD they have under contract for next season on their active roster concurrently is Ryan Ellis).

I dont know what you'd get excatly, but you'd need semi-equivalent replacements, both in position, production, salary:
Say Tkachuk to TOR for Marner: very different players, but does Marner's offense offset Tkachuk's "grit"
Lindholm and Hanifan to PHI for Farabee and Sanheim and a solid center prospect like Frost or Foerster
Tanev and a 2nd (?) to CGY for Brodie
If Im PHI: I offer RW Koneckny (60+ pts, young and signed long term at 5.5mil), LD Sanheim (young, 20+ minutes a night LD), center prospect Morgan Frost (now healthy and getting to game speed), defensive prospect Egor Zamula (great size and strength, just started 2nd season in AHL, looks like a bluechip) for Tkachuk and Hanifan.
Hanifan is better than Sanheim and Tkachuk is better than Koneckny, but the two high level prospects and maybe a 1st gets it done.

both teams kinda benefit; letting the blackhawks try to extend their dynasty. but, from the oilers side, I'm assuming that taylor hall would not have been traded for adam larsson in 2016 then, giving the oilers a pretty solid roster.

I don't think I'll spend too much time doing your work for you, but here's a couple off the top of my head:
-Martin Jones for SJ's first and Sean Kuraly (Who was considered a solid prospect at the time).
-Frederik Andersen for TOR's 1st (Sam Steel) and 2nd (Maxime Comtoissssss!!!!!)

I can see us retaining up to 50% because we're at the bottom of the food (=salary) chain and we could take Matheson back for laughs, but then you're talking about your 2022 first and Legare plus, and (a) I don't know what the "plus" would be, and (b) I think that such a price is more than you want to pay. And that's IF we wanted to trade him and he wanted to go, both of which I highly doubt.

I think that we'd want more for Dustin Brown than a bottom-6 RW, a taxi-squad LW and an over-the-horizon third. As you so accurately note, he's one of the league leaders in power-play goals, and net-front presence is a valuable commodity no matter what the age of the player.

Addressing needs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TraeYoung</b></div><div>Unfortunately for me, you’re right in everything you said lol. I had the idea of trading for Brown at the start of the year before he popped off so that doesn’t help his value for other teams haha. I can imagine he wants to and may deserve to retire In LA but I hope we could drink the juice and fall in love with the idea of another cup run, whether it’s realistic with this team or not.
In regards to Bowman, it’s funny because I was reading today about Zadorov to do some research before this and it’s been pointed out that historically Bowman doesn’t move guys he trades for so quick because he loves them no matter why. However with Zadorov being a pending free agent and rumors of his agent maybe wanting a significant raise, I’d hope he’d consider it. Thanks for the comment and discussion!</div></div>
If there is one thing that Bowman absolutely, unequivocally excels at... It is doubling down on a stupid move. David Rundblad anyone? Saad pissed away for Zads after taking the wash on Panarin? And acting like it was both necessary and a good idea at the time? Bowman's idea generator is his own worst enemy...
Agents chat a lot of **** because that's the job. For most of the season, Zads has been really bad. But he's been having his best games in the sweater lately, so the question is was he just taking some time to get up to Jeremy's system, or is he going to revert back to slow, out of position, and kinda dumb. If he continues to improve, and takes the longer "Connor Murphy" road to stability, I'm fine with giving him a long term contract for a decent raise. But if he wants more than 5.5/year, he can pound sand.

Well, if it comes to it, we'll protect 8 skaters. He's better than any of our forwards that that we'd potentially expose by protecting him. Trading him certainly makes expansion easier, but I'm not losing any sleep if we lose someone like Greenway to keep Dumba.

Discussion - Valuing Jets Prospects for Defensive Help
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arafay</b></div><div>Not much tbh. I would really be after Dumba. I’d want a big guy with shutdown capabilities who can also move the puck. Dumba doesn’t cross of 2 of those boxes to me. Therefore, he isn’t worth the price to the jets. However, if he was what we are looking for (ie if he had more size and was better in his own end), I’d consider parting with Samberg for him. However, I’d only consider it. My package would likely be: Stanley, harkins, and a 1st at most. Maybe the fact that he’s not what we are looking for is clouding my view there.</div></div>
You are 100% right that Dumba is not a shut down guy. He is, however, much better in his own end than is to believed from how people talk about him. Part of his lack in production after coming back from injury last year was because of a greater focus on play in his own end. This year he has really rounded out his game while remaining an offensive threat.
If MIN asked for a 1st, Vesalainen, and Copp/Lowry, what more would need to come back to WPG?
