Agreed. I think Hajek is a bum. Tampa fleeced ya giving us him and Howden.

I put him in that spot to represent the CBO. He’s not injured, unfortunately and as much as his game suggests. So we would be paying Toronto Hajek and the picks for Dermott and to buyout Smith for us.

I traded Murray to Vegas and I think I gave him the same exact contract. Was politely notified that my numbers were not close. After a down year where he lost his starting job and without an increase in salary cap, I think $4.5 isn’t bad for him. A team would have to be a little crazy or foolishly optimistic to commit more to him without seeing improvement.

I wouldn’t do it. I would rather see where Lundkvist, Kravstov and Kakko are at 1-2 years from now and address deficiencies from positions of strength at that point, as I don’t see us as legitimate Cup contenders next season anyway. I think we get caught up in over analyzing 19 and 20 years olds and forget that McDavid is a generational talent. Most guys aren’t showing you what they’re really going to be until their 3-5th years pro.

I wouldn’t say untouchable but I don’t think the organization sees Kapanen as someone who makes us more of a Cup contender in the next 5 years than we already are, or with the addition of Lundkvist and other potential trade options we have at our disposal. It’s also doubtful the Leafs pursue this trade as Nils is no sure thing to be NHL ready next season anyway and their window is now.

It’s not the worst proposal I’ve seen - Dermott is a known commodity whereas Nils hasn’t done anything at the pro level in North America. However, he’s probably rated as our second best prospect in the system right now and we aren’t in a position where we need to make a deal. We also have a ton of depth at LHD in the system also, so this is unlikely for those reasons, along with the issue of already having to protect Trouba, DeAngelo and Lindgren from Seattle.

Ah yeah I started this before Zub signed and forgot to go back and add. I would definitely only have one of those guys, in that case. Probably someone shorter term for when Brannstrom is ready - didn’t look like a lock quite yet.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gregb569</b></div><div>Why wouldn't NYR just OS Cirelli instead and save assets?</div></div>
Offer sheet depends on Cirelli actually agreeing to sign it, which he might not want to do. Also costs us 3 draft picks next year, which isn’t the end of the world, but in my proposal we actually unload two guys that I think the organization should want to move. Howden sucks but the coaching staff loves him and Lias might actually have a future as a bottom 6 forward if he can get his head and ass wired back together properly but right now he’s the black sheep of the organization. Jones is emerging as a nice 2nd or 3rd pairing LHD (some call him the left handed Adam Fox which I am the first to be very cautious of buying that kind of hype) but it’s a position of strength in the organization. Also if we make a trade vs an offer sheet, we could possibly have more leverage in negotiation if the organization prefers trying to bridge Cirelli vs going long term. Obviously he would never sign a bridge style offer sheet, but once we own his rights, we have more leverage.
Tampa might prefer to take back known assets (two former first round picks and an emerging prospect) rather than 3 draft picks for Cirelli - given their cap crunch they obviously don’t want to lose the guy but might decide it’s the best outcome in a bad situation.

I think we talked about this when I posted my Boston team. He’s got good AHL numbers, and I thought I saw something about him ruffling some feathers in their system with some comments he made about not getting a chance. We could use some depth/middle six wings and it seems like a low enough cost to take the chance. We got a 3rd from Boston for Holden a couple years ago so just returning the favor...

We would protect:
Panarin
Zibanejad
Kreider
Cirelli
Chytil
Buchnevich
Gauthier
Trouba
DeAngelo
Lindgren or Dermott
Georgiev
Seattle probably takes Lindgren/Dermott or Lemieux. Not a huge loss with our depth of LHD in the system.

I revisited the trade that supposedly almost happened at the deadline. Without a CBO it might not be as likely but multiple sources had this one at the finish line before Lou got cold feet. I don’t think the Isles can afford it, myself. They’re going to have to move out some of their bottom 6 guys making $3+m and dump Boychuk just to pay Barzal and Pulock

The LD is already " bad " and you want to play Gardiner on his off-side when he can't even defend on his strong side...
The CAR trade is one-sided for NJ.

I started this before Elvis got his extension. Blackwood is rfa without arbitration, so I had him lower. He will get more than I did above, I agree.
They have defense prospects and didn’t want to block them. I could see them take on a guy like Gardiner. The trade seems lopsided but I actually proposed it from a Carolina side as a way for them to save some cap space and they would probably be happy to move out Gardiner.
Yeah, I hate the devils but I didn’t try to be “biased” but I also didn’t pour hours into every one of these. Calm down, hoss.
Because they’re way under the cap I didn’t do a CBO but Schneider is the guy if they use it.

I didn’t think Granlund staying there was an option. He wasn’t very good in Nashville, was he?
The Evolving hockey guys have Toffoli over $6m for 5 years and over $6.5m for 7. Not saying Nashville is obligated to sign him, but it could be a fit.

They can have Howden. Any bum off the scrap heap can give us what he does. I’m more concerned with what we do at 3C in this scenario...also, as much as I want to see Strome traded vs extended, I think the cost here is steep. Perhaps Strome plus the Carolina pick for Ehlers or add Howden and one of Copp, Appleton or Lowry.

I don’t disagree about the defensemen - they could be in the market for a cheap 3rd pairing guy.
Ferland was highly sought after not that long ago. Had some injuries but for the right team he could still be a solid player. It may be just my personal opinion, but either you’re a good or great player and you’re worth a 1st round pick, you’re a decent hockey player and you’re worth a 2nd or you’re a roster player and you’re worth a 3rd or lower. Anything after the 2nd round is a lot of luck and low odds of success so that’s just where I break on draft pick trade values.

Assuming they stay where they are in the draft order (7-9) who do you think they are targeting? Is there a particular position of need? Seems like Lafreniere, Byfield, Stutzle and Drysdale are gone in the top 5. Next group sounds like Holtz, Rossi, Perfetti and Raymond. I would like the Rangers to find a way to get Rossi but I don’t see it happening.
