If Doug didnt panic after the cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheEarthmaster</b></div><div>The only time Pietrangelo ever anything remotely resembling that he "wanted" to leave was in the quotes right after he signed with Vegas where was like "yeah when I didn't have a contract four weeks before UFA I began to like the idea of leaving". They had OVER a year to give him another contract before then (extra time they uniquely had because of the COVID pause) and all they did was extend Faulk at market rate, extend Scandella at market rate (when they didn't even know what the cap would be), and dick Pierangelo around on contract structure. I'm not doing revisionist history on what is arguably the biggest reason the Blues' contention window shut.
You would have kept Dunn by exposing Krug, and you probably would have been able to keep both. You almost certainly lose Tarasenko in that case, maybe Walman if Seattle liked his upside.
If you shed three very different styles of defenseman and all three go on to be better on three different teams and the natural reaction is "well they never could have been that here" then you likely have a player development problem.</div></div>
I like what you've done here. I think that id also bring Barbashev back.
With regards to Petro, I believe that you're absolutely correct. Armstrong brought Faulk over within weeks of winning the Cup because he was not going to get a deal done with Petro. The message was loud and clear. There were not enough minutes or dollars to support 3 high end RHD and Parayko wasn't going anywhere. Petro, and his agent, knew they were getting jerked around, got pissed off and left. DA appears to have made a feeble attempt to mend the fence and extend Petro when Faulk had a poor showing in his first year with the Blues. But it was too little, too late.
Giving Dunn away for nothing was utter folly. They should have left Krug unprotected. Seattle was not going to take that terrible contract off your hands anyway.
Nice job.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lsendel3</b></div><div>I keep seeing Buch to Buffalo. I keep seeing incredible overpays. My question, legitimately, is how did his trade value triple/quadruple from his last year in NY (RFA signing rights, 25 years old, coming off near a ppg the year prior and a really good up and coming player in 19/20. He was traded for a second and a warm body. Now, age 29, with one year left to UFA, he’s worth firsts, top prospects, ++. I guess I don’t see it, I know he’s played a little more center and that increases his value, and I know his output is up. It’s like there’s some pluses and minuses from his earlier trade.</div></div>
He’s an established PPG two way winger. The trade even if he didn’t develop further was bad for the Rangers.
Tell me this, why did Sean Monahan get traded with a 1st just do dump him and then get traded for a 1st at this deadline? Prices change. Situations change. I don’t think Buffalo would move a Kulich. But I also think they have to move out some of these kids. They’re stuck in cycle of wasting away high end talents because they don’t have structure or veterans in place that teach guys to play the right way, and more specifically teach them to play a two-way brand.
Youth being the end all be all in value is the biggest fallacy tossed around here. It’s situational, and having years of control to keep down a salary is beneficial. But potential is rarely met, and yet it’s valued by fans way too highly.

Boston was my thought too…Grz expiring and Sweeney has soft spot for undersized dmen (once being one himself).
Minnesota could also be an option…they need an offensive dman. Maybe Carolina if Deangelo and Skjei are gone.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>Stevie Wonder is typically not interested on small Dmen. Setting that aside, I'd like to note that an expectation of not winning anything is not a reason to sneeze at extra cap space if the right player or players are available. One doesn't necessarily have to be contending to splurge on an excellent player. That's how you get to contending. I'm not saying that player has already presented himself, but with the cap rising greatly the next few years, a Krug buyout gets more palatable at a certain tipping point amount of retention. I'm not an economics expert, so I can not tell you what that dollar figure is, but I am fairly sure it's well below 4M.</div></div>
I would rather have the retention over the buy-out because this team probably isn't doing anything meaningful until 26-27. You still have the cap space to splurge this coming year as your forward core should be cheap with a bunch of guys on ELCs. The cheap buyout year is wasted on a team that probably won't be to the cap ceiling anyway. Then you're stuck paying him 2m+ until 29-30 when this team could be making multiple runs. I would rather eat more money upfront and not impact too much of the future, especially if the Blues retain 2.5m the earliest window in 26-27 would be cheaper to have the retention than buyout.

I know you chose Detroit for the hometown part but obviously, as you stated, we don't have a use for him. Also just thinking in general, as a lot of teams have young left-handed defensemen coming up, they would likely gravitate towards younger options. Maybe if a team like Pittsburgh, who only has a few years of competitiveness left (at least in their minds), might be interested in him. I honestly think they play out a few more years and hope that he gets to the point where they can LTIRetire him, or else buy him out with 2-3 years left. This team is at an interesting transition point, they should really focus on getting younger and gaining high end pieces for the future.

Don't want Hellebuyck. It'll cost to much to get him and since 2010, only 3 Vezina winning goalies have won the cup. Thomas, Vasilevsky ( twice ) and Holtby. Goaltending in the playoffs is wacky. Once a goalie gets on a run in the playoffs ( doesn't matter who it is, like Adin Hill for instance ) they can help you win a cup. I'd rather just keep and hopefully sign Timo long term.

Blues decline. The blues GM specifically said he would trade those picks for players under 26 with multiple years on their contract. Laughton does not fit what they are looking for and also the blues are not giving up a young bottom 6 center like Alexandrov who will be cheap.

Dunn is one of the hottest D in the league right now and swapping Seider from Chiarot to Walman has brought him back to last year's production. Army is not looking good lately.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aldore</b></div><div>100% agree with the Barby for JP. I think we look at it in similar ways. It’s just this signing gives us so much less flexibility and locks us into a Dcore that is a bit of a problem. I would have loved to see Perron where you have tarasenko and then flipped tarasenko to somebody for a legit top 2/4 left defensman. Would love to see neighbors succeed and then get some runs at it with the kids or make that line 1 with buch.</div></div>
For sure, I think we are on the same page. I would like to have kept Perron and done a trade of Tarasenko for a LD out East. Provy/Sanheim? Graves? But the show must go on, I think we make cost effective moves on the offense from here on out. Kyrou and O’Reilly are just extensions this offseason (at least ROR is). Kyrou should prove a more rounded game and then I’ll pay him. Tkachuk next year as an UFA is an option too. I think we will be just fine.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aldore</b></div><div>I mean, I agree he needs someone who can move the puck decently well but leddy is 1 dimensional in that regard. He needs someone who can do both. Leddy is bad to have on the team for this year, let alone the 3 after that. It’s bad cap management. Moving Krug isn’t gonna be easy with his contract and full NMC. And even if we did that, our top 2 LD as that would stand would be Perunovich and leddy? That’s not a championship LD core. I think Perunovich could be a solid second pairing guy just like I think krug is now. Leddy is not a 1st or even 2nd pairing guy. He probably had some top zone exit stat because he allows the other team in the zone so much he was almost destined to be in the top. I hope I’m wrong and leddy turns into a solid player but at 31 and everything I’ve seen, I just don’t have much faith in him.</div></div>
We will see for sure. Gotta see what happens first and go from there. As it sits after Kostin, Perunovich, and Mikkola sign back, the Blues would presumably be done. I wouldn't mind seeing a Barbashev for JP trade to lock down that 3RW for the foreseeable future. Including that trade, Blues would have:
Buch - ROR - Tarasenko
Saad - Thomas - Kyrou
Neighbours - Schenn - JP
Brown - NA - Kostin/Torp
Krug - Faulk
Leddy - Parayko
Perunovich - Scandella
Binnington - Greiss
Scr. Mikkola and Bortuzzo
