<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>I think part of the reason for the rotating is these guys are all auditioning for a job for when Dermott comes back. Assuming Sandin sticks after Derms is back, one of those guys is going to the AHL. Or Sandin is because he's waiver-exempt.

I'm also not sure why you sent down Petan and Gauthier to bring up Korshkov. Sure Korshkov has lots of potential, but Goat and Petan are playing very well. I'm not sure I want to see this much mixing and matching of lines 4 games into the season. Let guys get comfortable, see what happens when Hyman comes back and then makes moves if you have to.</div></div>

Agree with you on rotating bottom d-pairing in prep for Derms coming back.
Totally disagree on any thoughts of bringing Hyman back. He has value but skills the Leafs can ill afford at $2.25m. That is x3 players at $750k AAV! Risk of running 20-man roster deep into season vs a 23-man roster is simply not worth it. Hyman's greatest trade value is early in season...rather than once other clubs know Leafs are squeezed and HAVE to trade him.
I too like Petan but his $775 cap hit is +$25k higher than Kenny's and, as you'll see if you check, I'm $4000 under cap...and can't afford him! That is price of signing Mitch/Matty &amp; Willy.
I never suggested sending The Goat down?? As we all know, he has played great! My suggested 4th Line (see above) is Goat/Spezza/Korshkov. Korshkov has had 3 yrs in KHL and was a top point scorer in same WJC (2015-16) that showcased Laine/Aho/Matthews/Marner/etc. Given Korshkov's higher AAV, keeping him down allows Leafs to try out 3 players in place of x2 (same applies to others on +/-$900k ELCs). I agree with management rationale of giving more +/-$750k guys a try out early on but, that said, IMO, Korshkov should be brought up and given a shot as soon as Babs/Sheldon feel he has adjusted to smaller ice surface.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>I don't see the fit with Mayfield. He's a bit overpaid for a 3rd pair guy and that's what he probably should be here. If you're playing him higher than that you might have issues.

Korshkov should start the year with the Marlies. Remember the Leafs model is to over-ripen their prospects and only play them when they're ready. They would not want to expose anybody who is not ready for NHL action. Especially on the top line. Korshkov is a potential call-up for a late season playoff push (especially after the trade deadline when the cap is not a factor).

I don't know how much of a trade market Hyman is going to have, especially if teams know the Leafs need to move him. It's going to be interesting with how tight things are. I would imagine they will try to hang onto him if possible and maybe move him in the summer. But you don't want to give away a good player when you're trying to win a cup.</div></div>

Did you see my 'notes' regarding Korshkov's relative performance in WJC-20 ('15-16') ...and other NHL players who were in that tournament? Given his choice to pursue KHL experience, you can also 'over season' players. Imo, giving Korshkov a shot in NHL with top players, as they did with Borgman &amp; Risen, might have merit. Just saying.

Knowing that Leafs must trade Hyman is clearly at issue. That said, no way Leafs should carry Hyman, with his skill set at $2.25m, in place of x3 players @$750k. This is reality of price paid by Leafs for top 4...and salary cap not going up as much as expected. Risk of injury with only a 20-man roster is not worth it.
