Sorry, imo, it is Hyman who is over-rated. (Ever consider why is he not still on Matty's Line?) At $2.25m that would commit Leafs to a 20-man roster! Imo, for a team seeking to make run for Cup, that's totally ridiculous. Remember that Toronto Star article in Sept'10? Hyman 'team' has carefully crafted his social media profile but he wouldn't make Top 6 on any other NHL team. Put him out to market and see what kind of return he generates from other NHL teams?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>I think part of the reason for the rotating is these guys are all auditioning for a job for when Dermott comes back. Assuming Sandin sticks after Derms is back, one of those guys is going to the AHL. Or Sandin is because he's waiver-exempt.
I'm also not sure why you sent down Petan and Gauthier to bring up Korshkov. Sure Korshkov has lots of potential, but Goat and Petan are playing very well. I'm not sure I want to see this much mixing and matching of lines 4 games into the season. Let guys get comfortable, see what happens when Hyman comes back and then makes moves if you have to.</div></div>
Agree with you on rotating bottom d-pairing in prep for Derms coming back.
Totally disagree on any thoughts of bringing Hyman back. He has value but skills the Leafs can ill afford at $2.25m. That is x3 players at $750k AAV! Risk of running 20-man roster deep into season vs a 23-man roster is simply not worth it. Hyman's greatest trade value is early in season...rather than once other clubs know Leafs are squeezed and HAVE to trade him.
I too like Petan but his $775 cap hit is +$25k higher than Kenny's and, as you'll see if you check, I'm $4000 under cap...and can't afford him! That is price of signing Mitch/Matty & Willy.
I never suggested sending The Goat down?? As we all know, he has played great! My suggested 4th Line (see above) is Goat/Spezza/Korshkov. Korshkov has had 3 yrs in KHL and was a top point scorer in same WJC (2015-16) that showcased Laine/Aho/Matthews/Marner/etc. Given Korshkov's higher AAV, keeping him down allows Leafs to try out 3 players in place of x2 (same applies to others on +/-$900k ELCs). I agree with management rationale of giving more +/-$750k guys a try out early on but, that said, IMO, Korshkov should be brought up and given a shot as soon as Babs/Sheldon feel he has adjusted to smaller ice surface.

Have Kapanen with Kerfoot and either Johnsson and Moore. Kappy would see PK time also. Kappy doesn't seem to working well at LW.</div></div>
Totally OK with Miki/Matty/Willy! IMO, the sooner Babs moves to the line combos you(we)'re suggesting the sooner the Leafs can re-focus on their special teams - which imo are 'all critical'. (At this time, Babs' principle focus would appear to remain sorting out the main line combos.) Only thing I'd like to see, at some point in season, is Korshkov on 4th Line - so they can give him a shot in front of net on 2nd PP unit? He was wicked in close in pre-season.

C'mon!...how can +40 combined goal production in 18'-19' be 'horrible'? Canes remain flush with D (can only protect 3 in Expansion Draft) and need offense. They are also rumored to be preferred choice of Puljujarvi - for whom they would need to create cap space. In anticipation of future issues, who to better to strike a premptive deal with than Dubas - now?

As you know, your $3.25m is near to current Brandon Montour number. I'd prefer Montour.

I think you've pretty much got this spot on! - except for your 22-man roster and +/-$729 in cap space. With this roster, I'd suspect Dubas would put another man in press box. Maybe Holl? - an RD who will be at risk if sent down on waivers?

Yes...thought your logic for Hyman trade was 'inspired'. Ottawa w/ DJ and Isles w/Lou might also be targets for Dubas trade discussions(?). Hyman is known commodity to both as they're both familiar with his work ethic. Imo Leafs have a fully subscribed payroll for forwards and need to manage short/medium $$ available for blueline and for goaltending. They have eight players (including five D-men) poised to hit the UFA market next July.

Given cap constraints, Hyman,'s skill set is just far too limited and infinitely better served by x3 players @$750k...or $ spent on Leafs blueline roster (whether those you've proposed or others?). We know what Hyman can do. In '20-21' he will be 28 going on 29 and possesses zero growth potential. Give it up! Under limits resulting from salary payouts to others, Leafs can't afford Hyman's $2.25m sticker price. (You think he is worth +/- Moore, Timashov & Petan 'combined' ???)
Korshkov has more upside than many of the bench players that you've identified here. After <9 games in '19, and likely send down to Marlies for more TOI/seasoning, I could see him as a late season call up in '20..and likely full time roster player in '20-'21.
Sadly, imo, Liljgren has simply just not 'shown it' (which is not necessarily bad for a D)...but his aversion to hitting and to refraining from getting involved when his fellow teammates are roughed-up suggests that he should be given first pairing exposure on Marlies this year to assess whether he has sufficient merit for '20-'21 NHL call up.
Just saying.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>I don't see the fit with Mayfield. He's a bit overpaid for a 3rd pair guy and that's what he probably should be here. If you're playing him higher than that you might have issues.
Korshkov should start the year with the Marlies. Remember the Leafs model is to over-ripen their prospects and only play them when they're ready. They would not want to expose anybody who is not ready for NHL action. Especially on the top line. Korshkov is a potential call-up for a late season playoff push (especially after the trade deadline when the cap is not a factor).
I don't know how much of a trade market Hyman is going to have, especially if teams know the Leafs need to move him. It's going to be interesting with how tight things are. I would imagine they will try to hang onto him if possible and maybe move him in the summer. But you don't want to give away a good player when you're trying to win a cup.</div></div>
Did you see my 'notes' regarding Korshkov's relative performance in WJC-20 ('15-16') ...and other NHL players who were in that tournament? Given his choice to pursue KHL experience, you can also 'over season' players. Imo, giving Korshkov a shot in NHL with top players, as they did with Borgman & Risen, might have merit. Just saying.
Knowing that Leafs must trade Hyman is clearly at issue. That said, no way Leafs should carry Hyman, with his skill set at $2.25m, in place of x3 players @$750k. This is reality of price paid by Leafs for top 4...and salary cap not going up as much as expected. Risk of injury with only a 20-man roster is not worth it.

Isles probably don't want to move a cost efficient Dman and they really don't need another winger.</div></div>
In ideal world, I suspect Leafs would probably prefer to 'bank' Sandin until 21-22(?) ... so they don't have to protect/leave him exposed in draft (i.e. protect Rielly, Dermott, Muzzin/Barrie (?). Not certain they can wait that long...given blueline challenges...but they'll need to give Sandin taste of NHL.
I picked Isles for Hyman trade only because they have a surplus of D...and he is known commodity to Lou...but appreciate your citing of the issues involved.

It's my understanding teams can only protect 3D under contract for 21-22 who have 40 games in prior. Given that your proposed team is 20-21 (qualifying 40), by my reckoning, you'd be exposing one or maybe 2 'quality D' to Seattle. This very smart? In 21-22 wouldn't you ideally prefer to protect 3 best D + carry 3 in their Contract Year One (without qualfying prior 40)? In short, is this deal really worth all the mental effort?

After signing Big Four, Leafs can't afford to pay $2.250m for Hyman's skill set. He will be 28 in June. Imo, either trade him for prospects or seek to resign him at +$700k. There are plenty of twenty-somethings in NHL who would can deliver the services that Hyman provides and would be thrilled to play with Tavares.
