New Era
While I'd love to move Provy to the Leafs, and I think Tavares would be a good add, and we have the cap to do so...I think CBJ should ask for more, or to give up less. There's probably only 6 or 7 teams that could take Tavares' full cap hit (Utah, SJS, CHI, CBJ, ANA, NSH?, SEA?), and none of them are very appealing for Tavares to waive to.
It's the kind thing where the main asset Toronto is getting back is $11M in cap space, and that's immensely costly. With Provorov being a UFA, we're essentially saying a $5.5M retained 3C Tavares will be worth more at TDL than a ~$2.3M retained 2LD Provorov, which...likely isn't true.
CBJ are interested, but probably counter with Provorov (half-retained, because why not?) and a 3rd for Tavares and either Minten or a 1st.

Wings opening day roster after eventful offseason
Columbus thinks about it, but I don't think adding Husso is an option unless Elvis goes the other way. That, plus getting basically a mid-1st alone for a retained Laine, makes it a probable no. It's not bad, just not enticing enough to pull the trigger.

Interesting choice to not resign Marchenko, Chinakhov, Texier, Nylander, or Sillinger. And putting Fantilli on the 4th line...
I get this ACGM is a win-now team (and yes, signing most notable forward free agents to one team helps), but this franchise definitely should not be in a win-now mindset.

Nuke For Laine

Quoting: earl08

lol I didn't know he might not play. What's the deal with Laine?

He's still currently in the player assistance program, for who-knows-how-long. That, plus people assuming he's going to get injured as soon as he steps on the ice, makes it easy to write off the player. I think he's in the lineup game 1, and if he's not getting headshot or slewfooted like this year, he probably plays 60-70 games.

CBJ say no, we'd rather take the chance on the younger, higher-upside winger with the shorter contract who better fits our window, who could also actually be in the lineup at the start of the season.

Laine Norris Swap
I get the idea, but Laine ended up on the shelf after two brutal dirty hits and a stint in the PAP likely attributed to a difficult personal stretch (i.e. "not likely to be a recurring issue"). Norris has had surgery on the same shoulder like 3 times and it's legitimately threatening his career. I'd rather keep Laine for now, especially if we're adding Tex to make it work. His contract is far less risky, and he's a little more likely to fully rebound.

Right, but we've got the time and cap space to take another chance on a guy who, when in the lineup, is still nearly ppg and has scored at higher rates than a lot of his WPG seasons. He's penciled in as the top-line RW. If it works: great. If not: well, it's not like his value will be lower, and his contract gets easier to move with just one year left.
Jackets fans aren't trying to push him out the door, but every team tries to tell us he's a worthless player that we should give them for pennies on the dollar...just so they can play him in their top 6 and hope for 30+ goals. That's not exactly an appealing sell.

Extra B-level picks/prospects don't help a team that has plenty, and has a lack of top-end talent. CBJ say no. We don't have any reason to trade Laine while his value is low.
If we did, it's either for 1) a top-line winger return and someone else takes the risk, 2) part of a package for an upgrade, or 3) heavily-conditioned picks that upgrade to a premium if he plays games and scores goals.

24-25 Leafs Look Ahead VII - Marners a Bluejacket
Marner is a redundant luxury in terms of top-6 playmaking forwards with both Johnson and Gaudreau here. He's also redundant in terms of highly paid top-6 forwards with Gaudreau and Laine here.
Jiricek and Jenner are nonstarters for a guy who, though clearly the better player, is still a redundant luxury with the team's current makeup.
A Marner trade to Columbus includes two of KJ, Laine, and Gaudreau, in that order of likelihood. Otherwise it's an unserious offer from Columbus' perspective. If you're not interested in those pieces, we're not interested in a trade, full stop.

It's got a pathetic history, so much so that he's the games played leader and arguably the most significant player in franchise history, hence being untouchable.
But hey, at least we've got more series wins than the Leafs, plus a head-to-head playoff vicotry, in the last 20 years. So congrats, your favorite team is more pathetic in the last 20 years than the banner child for pathetic franchises in North American sports.

Hey now, you're not hiding your MTL fandom behind a Columbus ACGM...we're not interested in handing you Johnson, unless you're giving us the quality, and we're giving you the quantity.
I don't see us trading Laine unless it's for an NHL-floor prospect that's nearly ready now, plus picks that are heavily conditioned (like, a 3rd that upgrades to a 2nd if he plays 50+ games, and upgrades to a 1st if he scores 25+ goals). Otherwise it makes more sense to keep him.
Most of the other moves I'm actually pretty okay with. It's a reasonable, sensical roster that's better than last year's, so props for that!

Oh buddy...you're missing, like, 5OA for us to take Dvorak and hand you Laine.
I'll say the same thing I say every time: MTL and CBJ are in similar spots, with similar needs, assets, and timelines. We're terrible trade partners.
Laine's value is at its lowest, but he's still a near-ppg producer in Columbus and only 26. Unless we're putting him in a package for 5OA, Caulfield, Slaf, Reinbacher, or Suzuki...we're not interested.

Seconding this. It's not a bad offer, but we don't have another top-pair potential RD, and it's a dire need. Arguably, we don't even have another NHL-floor RD in the pipeline. I don't think Jiricek gets moved unless there's a better, NHL-proven, U25 RD coming back...and who's giving that up?

Is it a lazy, unrealistic Laine trade that's been done dozens of times on this site already, and makes no sense for Columbus? Yes. But...

Quoting: Jacketsman61

The Jackets most certainly doesn’t happen. The Jackets are taking a cap dump and giving up Laine. You want Laine and for us to take Anderson…it’s 5OA and Beck++ at minimum.

That's just not realistic.
That said, we're not trading Laine unless it's 1) an upgrade, 2) a 1st-line winger return, or 3) a heavily-conditioned draft haul that likely upgrades to multiple 1sts. Otherwise, CBJ (a team that needs high-end talent and has zero cap crunch) just keep him and hope for a rebound.
CBJ counters with asking the price on Caulfield, Suzuki, Slafkovsky, Reinbacher, or 5OA, since those are the only pieces we'd be interested in.

This is such a lazy argument. The whole premise of this specific ACGM is that he waives for Columbus, and he's not waiving for somewhere he wouldn't consider extending. Why in the world would he waive for a bottom-4 team as a UFA-to-be otherwise? Why would Columbus ever consider trading anything for Marner in an assumed non-playoff year unless there was an extension in place?
Suspend your disbelief for one second for the sake of a conversation. If he's not going to extend anywhere because he's going to test free agency, he's going to stay in Toronto and then walk.

Quoting: LuckyMoneyPuck

You are also over here assuming CBJ is buying out Elvis.
A team with no real organizational depth in net, in one of the worst goalie markets in years, isn't buying out a goalie.

Tarasov and Greaves both proved last season that they're better options already. We have organizational depth, we just need a vet backup that isn't going to b**** to the media and demand a trade when he plays himself out of 1st or 2nd string. Hence the probable buyout.

Re If Marner Waives
I'd classify this under "aggressive offseason", in which case it's probably one of my favorites...which means trade values likely skew Columbus' way. That's especially true on Marner, I think that's the max offer CBJ give, but it's also lower than where other teams would be willing to go.
I wouldn't change much. A lot of things have to go right (Fantilli taking a huge step, Laine bouncing back fully, Marner meshing well, Tarasov playing like he did at his peak last season, Nylander finding more magic in the tank, and basically half the bottom-6 developing), but it's not out of the question that this team pushes for a wildcard spot next year.

Ok...I get Kampf is a cap dump but you can keep the 2nd. Pick a different team, though, Columbus has enough trouble finding spots for our younger players that need time. Kuraly has the 4C spot now, LDBB has it in the future.

Moving Contracts
The Elvis move is fine, but I'm not convinced it's better than a buyout.
The estimate cap floor for next year is $64,700,000 per CapFriendly itself. I get this isn't a complete roster and there's still all the RFAs to sign, but there's absolutely zero reason for this team to be paying to move contracts.
And moving Laine at all while his value is this low will almost certainly bite us unless we're getting an overpay, or heavily-conditioned picks. Retaining half for 2 more years, while also retaining half on Merzlikins for the next 3, would be such a massive unforced error. ~$6M in dead cap on top of only 1 retention slot each of the next two years, when we're likely selling and retaining on Provorov to eat up the third this year, would be questionable at best.

Robertson isn't of interest to Columbus, but I'm sure someone would take a flier on him for a 3rd. Marner you can get more for, Timmins you may need to attach a 7th to in order to move. But the values aren't so far off that it's impossible, or even unlikely.
