Im not sure Peeke is fighting anyone for his spot. I think he has the 2RD slot fairly locked down, Babcock has called him out by name in his interviews/press conferences. Blanks is 7D, he wont be in the starting lineup. Jiricek would be a surprise to be anywhere other than the AHL this season, at least to start. <strong>I just dont think a Brodie rental maximizes the value from Peeke</strong>. I would rather get like a 3rd round pick that could bring value down the line rather than waste his value on a rental that we dont need.</div></div>
brodie improves the team and increases the likeihood that they can make the playoffs.
if they make this move and they're in a playoff spot come deadline time, it's worth it.
if they make this move and they're not in a playoff spot come deadline time, a rental brodie at 50% retention will fetch a lot more what peeke would fetch right now imo.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BoomerTheHero</b></div><div>Brodie is a RD and it would just mean we are scratching one of Brodie or Boqvist instead of Peeke or Boqvist. He also costs almost double of Peeke, so it would limit us on what other moves would be possible. We essentially get an older and more expensive replacement for Peeke, when what we need to do is move Peeke or Boqvist for picks, prospects, or a position of need. Like i said it just makes no sense for us and we would be better off keeping Peeke.</div></div>
brodie is a left hander. capfriendly arbitrarily lists him as a RD for the same reason it lists blankenburg as a LD – because both guys played their off-side out of necessity.
unlike peeke, he's a guy who they can play in any of the six d-man spots. peeke can't play on the left and can't play on the top pair. he's fighting for the second or third pair RD spot, but the other guys in that equation either have higher upside (boqvist, jiricek), are better right now (blankenburg) or are more expensive/harder to move (gudbranson).
he's a shutdown guy who can also get the puck out of the zone and handle big minutes, so you could either put him with werenski:
werenski - brodie
provorov - severson
bean - blankenburg/gudbranson/jiricek
or let him be a safety blanket for one of the young guys:
werenski - severson
brodie - boqvist/jiricek
provorov - blankenburg/gudbranson
in the roster build above, jiricek stays in the AHL, gudbranson is the 7D, and the jackets have three balanced pairs that can be very effective and all handle 20+ minutes a night if needed.
the short-term cap is fine, and it buys them more cap room in the following two seasons when they'll need it a lot more.

two moves
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BoomerTheHero</b></div><div>Peeke for Brodie makes no sense.</div></div>
for CBJ:
- adds a veteran LHD (position of need)
- adds a ton of flexibility (can play RD with werenski or LD to partner with a young RHD like boqvist or jiricek)
- adds a quality player to a position where they've had injuries
- only costs them a guy who they're likely to move anyway
- frees up $5.5m in cap over the following two years
i know it doesn't address the 'logjam' but it doesn't have to – it makes them better at a reasonable price. they can clear the logjam elsewhere, unless the logjam is unable to be cleared this offseason anyway, in which case it's a straight-up upgrade that helps clear the logjam the following season.
for TOR:
- gets them a player they like
- gets them a player with term at a low cost
- helps fix the cap crunch without costing them nylander
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>capsleafs447</b></div><div>Leafs decline. Hard pass from the Caps.</div></div>
wasn't it reported that no one was willing to offer them anything significant for kuzy? it's a hard contract to move. this deal would move that contract, give them two flippable expiring assets who can contribute this year, and save them nearly $8m in cap the following year.
both bean and roslovic are former first-round picks who have shown the ability to produce in the NHL, but haven't consistently put it together. WSH is flush with guys like that who they've turned around – strome, milano, etc.

the price makes sense from the cbj perspective imo. they're adding a center in the draft. ensuring a long-term center core of thomas + the 2023 pick + sillinger/jenner is worth giving up assets at positions of depth.

danault facilitating a three-way trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PuckLuck_77</b></div><div>This is certainly something different and has some thought put into it.
But I sincerely doubt that Danault waives his NMC for Columbus, and I don't think PLD for Danault is what the Kings want to do for the way they play the game. LA lives off of their defensive forwards, and Danault has been the only one that's been able to consistently hold McDavid at least on Earth when he's not paired with Draisaitl. Kopitar, through no fault of his own since age waits for no man, can't keep up with McDavid. And I don't trust PLD to be the guy that goes against 97 in a long series. Not at all.</div></div>
danault's NMC would definitely be the biggest hurdle. as for your other points, i don't disagree at all, but i think the appeal is more medium/long-term than short-term. being able to roll kopitar-pld-byfield down the middle would be absurd, and a pld-byfield duo after kopitar retires would be nasty to face in the playoffs.

there's absolutely no way that a second round pick gets you boqvist. he's only moving if we're getting a center back.
the only way boqvist to florida makes sense is if we get back either luostarinen or an extended reinhart.
that said: andrew peeke would be a good gudas replacement for florida, has term/is cheaper, and is a south florida native. would make a lot of sense as well.

Summer 2022 type of trade all over again
boqvist's had some injuries since coming to columbus but his development is going very well overall. he was awesome for us in the second half of the season and should be our #2 RD + PP1 defenseman this season. the only reason why his name is out there is because jiricek may force his way into the lineup. if we're trading boqvist it's in a package for a top six center.
MTL fans seem to view dach as untouchable, but he's really the only piece that they have outside the super untouchable guys (suzuki, caufield, slafkovsky) who would fit CBJ's needs in a boqvist trade at this point.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LosPatos</b></div><div>I’d used that first to go after an already established 1C / 2C. Byfield is really shakey</div></div>
the only guys out there who fit that bill are either going to be under contract well into their late 30s (hertl), pure rentals (backlund), both (lindholm with or without an extension) or flawed/expensive mid-term (kuznetsov, hayes).
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pwisch17</b></div><div>Not sure how this makes sense with CBJ adding a top C in the draft this year. Byfield hasn’t developed as fast as expected and is not an immediate 1C answer. He’d be on the same growth curve as the 3OA pick this year, so it just seems redundant.</div></div>
whoever they draft (assuming carlsson/smith) won't be NHL ready right away. byfield would be a year ahead of them, and already has pro experience. don't think he'd be redundant at all.
the appeal of adding him would boil down to wanting a long-term 1-2 punch with their 2023 pick and byfield as their top two centers. that'd also make sillinger a potential plus as the #3 and voronkov as the #4 – with all four of those guys being either on ELCs or RFA deals, instead of UFA deals taking them into their late 30s (i.e. moving significant pieces for lindholm and then extending him).

William Karlsson this year: 14-39–53, 17:28 TOI/GP, +14
Recent free agent centers:
Andrew Copp: 21-32–53, 19:11 TOI/GP, +15 -- $5.6m x 5 years
Ryan Strome: 21-33–54, 18:19 TOI/GP, +15, -- $5m x 5 years
Vincent Trocheck: 21-30–51, 17:52 TOI/GP, +21, $5.6m x 7 years
Extremely similar production (and Karlsson is less of a PP threat than those guys, too) – Karlsson has a slightly higher AAV but doesn't have the long term. No, he hasn't lived up to his 40-goal season, but he's paid appropriately as a 2C on a team that has two better options (Eichel and Stephenson), so he's a luxury.
As for Martinez, he has a 12-team NTC that slides to an 8-team NTC this summer. Most players use 7 of those slots on the Canadian teams. I'd wager that Arizona, Anaheim and Chicago are pretty common on those lists nowadays, too. Depending on the timing, it may not even be up to him, but if it is, Columbus may not even be on his list given that he played college hockey in Ohio.

what team out there would realistically be able to beat a package of sillinger + mateychuk + peeke/chinakhov + LAK's 1st (~22oa), CBJ's 2nd (~33oa) + CBJ's 2024 1st?

for the jackets specifically, it leans even heavier toward fantilli. given the depth in our system, i'd much rather get one premium piece than two very good ones.

if CBJ picks in the top three (or even top four) the pick is off the table, full stop.
the only exception would be if you came with a godfather offer. dropping from 2 to 5 in a draft where the top tier has four players, three of which are at cbj's biggest positional need (center), isn't that.
a real godfather offer here would be something like suzuki + slafkovsky + #5OA and even then i'm not sure that provides more excess value than three ELC years of adam fantilli.

boqvist's game has grown as the season has gone on. he's not untouchable, but he's definitely not available in a trade for a third line forward and some futures. the jackets' roster math (and needs) indicate that they're not gonna move one piece for multiple. they already have some logjams. instead they'll be looking to make hockey trades or consolidate pieces.

Adam Boqvist signed a nearly identical extension two months before Peeke signed his (granted Peeke's doesn't kick in right away like Boqvist's did). Boqvist's also been a bright spot for the Jackets this year while Peeke's been pretty stagnant.
The Jackets have a lot of other guys at RHD and Peeke (big young RHD, term + low cap) make him the most moveable of the group.
Normally I'd say they would probably prefer a center to come back – Krebs would be a great target here (with CBJ adding something) – but since they have to clear a logjam I could see them moving him for picks. Peeke + a 3rd for a mid/late first would make more sense than just moving him for a second. Then they could move that first + the LAK first + their own second for a stud LHD or center.
