I never said he's been great or even good. I'm not a Risto fan boy or anything; in fact I'm fairly quick to criticize him. I did infer he's play has been much better and that point still stands. If you want to reference the analytics that point still stands. He's been better. Hopefully it continues.

playoffs again
No need to include Erod, He's a solid guy to keep for the bottom 6 and Risto alone should get that deal done.
I think you've paid Mitts too much (just from what we've seen career-to-date)
I think Rieno will cost more then 7 with the way he's trending
I would want to sign Olofsson for much longer then 2 years; maybe a 5 year deal (he's 24, sign him until he reaches 29).

This right here. Everyone loves to rag on Risto (some of it very much warranted), but the facts are the Sabres are 5-0-1 and Defensively look great and Risto is STILL leading the team in TOI with roughly 25 minutes played a night.
People can't have it both ways. I think more then anything the start to this year shows just how bad of a coach Housley was. People should be focusing in on how horrible Housley was at deploying players, and consistently put them in the wrong situations. Kreuger is showing just how great Risto can be when used properly.

I agree. Edmonton most definitely does not have the forward depth to justify trading RNH. I don't think they should. I also didn't purpose the trade and I don't want RNH. Just pointed out how your counter ask was asinine.

Sure, and there is also a chance that RNH walks after next season since he's a UFA. Unprotected 1sts have enormous amounts of value nowadays with the lottery system. Hence why 90% of trades involving a 1st round pick have conditions attached to protect it in case of a lottery win. It's a ridiculous ask and RNH isn't good enough or have enough term left on a deal to justify it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BeterChiarelli</b></div><div>Do Sabres fans still not understand - despite Edmonton's flaws - that nobody is paying a premium price for Ristolainen?
If you want this deal, drop the 2021 2nd Round Pick in favour of the Buffalo 2020 1st (unprotected) and toss Davidsson in. I literally don't care that Puljujarvi is in this deal: in what universe does one of the league's worst defenders and a middle-six winger net you a defensively-responsible top-6 center? Christ almighty, give something up if you want to get RNH. Teams should pay for what players are worth, the Chiarelli days are over. The Oilers won't pay for what Sheary or Ristolainen could be in Edmonton. They'll pay for what they've been in Buffalo, and that's only a couple steps north of NHL replacement level players.</div></div>
Listen, I'll be the first one to say Risto isn't great. But tossing in an unprotected 1st and davidsson just for RNH is just crazy talk.

My hot take on the Sabres and Botterill in description box
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>I beg to differ. Respectfully.
Your statement that "it has been proven it only takes 1-2 years to turn around a franchise" implies that this is a straightforward task that should the standard outcome. I would like to know what teams you think were "turned around" in the last decade -- positively. (My hangdog Kings were turned around, all right, but not in the direction I'd hoped.) I think the more common outcome (in any professional sport) of rebuilding efforts is modest improvement unless and until a bolt from the blue pushes the team forward (like getting to draft Sidney Crosby). Canadian fans have been waiting years for Edmonton and Vancouver to become relevant, and the Coyotes franchise is the Ottoman Empire of the NHL. From the outside, Botterill seems to me to have done a pretty good job. Even the Radar O'Reilly trade may turn out better if Thompson and Montour improve to their hoped-for potential.
Yes, you should "demand more," but the patience for which gerowrj16 is asking is to be satisfied with contending for the playoffs this year. I sure would be happy for that from my local Ducks, but I have NO hope that this is a reasonable expectation for my Kings.
Idle thought: if Botterill manages to move Ristolainen somewhere for a 2020 first-round pick, and maybe adds a second-rounder too (even if it means exchanging a few lower ones), you should be able to fill a chartered bus to spend a nice June weekend in Montreal having a great time cheering your lungs out in an enemy arena.</div></div>
Fair points. I didn't mean to come off to harsh but the reality is in today's NHL teams typically do not go 8 years without making the playoffs at least once. Especially when you include the new lottery draft format. The Sabres haven't even come close to the playoffs and that's the problem.
For example:
2015-2016 Leafs. Finished 30th, won lottery; next year made playoffs.
2016-2017 Devils. Finished 27th, won lottery; next year made playoffs.
2017-2018 Sabres. Finished 31st, won lottery; next year finished 27th
It doesn't take years and years like it used to if you have a competent front office.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sabres89</b></div><div>It's not a great time to want to dump 5 million dollar players for a 7th. And when they have multiple years like okposo, you are probably looking at either adding something pretty nice, or taking back an equally terrible contract and hoping you can make it work. One of the op's points was adding a second to okposo for the expansion draft. I don't think that flies. We probably have a name d that will be exposed, and after Mcphee took Vegas to the cup, nobody wants your warts for a second.</div></div>
I understand that, but there is nothing stopping the Sabres from burying Sobotka/ Girgensons for 1 year in the minors. Sure they won't get much salary relief but the it will allow for younger and potentially better players to replace them. We've seen what these vets have to offer and it continues to drive the sabres overall to the bottom of the standings. Okoposo is tougher since he has a few years left on his deal, but who cares? send him to Roch and let him provide veteran leadership from the minors.
There cap isn't an issue and if these players are negatively impacting the NHL club they should not be here.

Botterill has made some great moves, sure. He is also entering his 3rd season behind the helm; in a league where it has been proven it only takes 1-2 years to turn around a franchise.
How can you preach patience? His teams have finished 26th, 30th, 27th. The team hasn't made the playoffs in 8 years. As fans, we deserve better. "The process" and "patience" is team propaganda put out to make sure fans continue to buy into a franchise and spend their hard earned money on a team that has consistently over promised and under delivered.
What's wrong with wanting/ demanding more?
And lastly I'll say this...its not about what moves Botterill has made, its about the moves he hasn't made. Getting rid of players such as Girgensons, Okposo, Sobotka (who's actually on the 2nd line to start the year LOL) are simple moves that improve the makeup of the team simply by subtracting them. Bury them in the minors, ship them to Russia, I don't really care. The team did it with Moulson, and they should do it again.

As a Bruins fan, I hope he doesn't figure it out, but wouldn't surprise me to see him as a legit stud in a couple years. He is only 24. He needs to stop chasing the hit IMO. Hitting is only valueable when you don't take yourself out of position.</div></div>
I understand what you're saying, and I don't necessarily disagree. My problem with Risto is that even though he's only 24, he's already played 424 NHL games which leads me to believe that he kind of is what he is as a player currently.
I don't think he's as bad as people make him out to be when pointing out his +/- but watching him every game makes me think he has continued to regress. He panics with the puck on his stick and usually just punts it out of the zone. In a day and age where puck possession is everything that is not a recipe for success.
The flip side being is he's a RHD who has had 4 seasons in a row of over 40 points (albeit a lot on the pp, but points are still valuable and RHD are hard to find). Hopefully he can figure it out because he looked so promising to start his career

IDK about that. Peterson is great and all but UPL projects to have a higher ceiling.
Its a good debate and Peterson has impressed in his very limited time in the NHL, but the sample size is still small (and yes I understand the UPL has not played any NHL games yet)
UPL coming fresh off a world junior gold, OHL goaltender of the year, winning the Red Tilson Torphy (most outstanding player in the league), makes me lean toward UPL having the higher ceiling.
Since Goaltending is such a crap shoot, give me the guy with the most potential for upside every time.

Buffalo already has its goalie of the future in UPL...so they have no need for Peterson.
Reinos point totals the last 4 years: 42, 47, 50, 65. All done on terrible teams. He's getting a long term deal and isn't being traded unless its for some ridiculous package (this aint it).
I wouldn't trade Reinhart straight up for even a player like Laine...so this is a hard no.

There are a plethora of GMs on the record stating the league is frozen over the RFAs. I think many GMs have loosely structured deals in place, but the RFAs are holding everything up. Don't be shocked to see a lot of movement. We are entering uncharted territory for the league so it probably isn't the best idea to look at past events and think that is necessarily how it will continue.
Teams aren't locked into anything at camp. I would look more to the start of the regular season as when things will get ironed out; not the start of camp.

That could very well be true. Or the league could be log jammed waiting on the long list of RFAs who have yet to sign. Once the RFAs start signing you could begin to see a lot of movement across the league.
