Fixes from a Rivals Perspective
Starret will definitely be resigned after his season in Bakersfield.
Some Oiler media is now saying expect 8 or 9 new players. Trades are going to be hard & salary cap won't help. They will need to chase underappreciated players.
Goalies
They're not going to spend $10M on goalies. Look for a vet like Niemi, Elliot, Kinkaid or Nilsson to be signed. They might take a flyer on a Jack Campbell/Jake Allen type.
Defense
After Ken Hollands comments yesterday, there's no way Bouchard plays more than a handful of NHL games this year. Bear, Persson or Jones will play before EB. They might go out for a guy like Pionk or Colin Miller.
Manning will be buried in the AHL, traded or bought out. Trading will be hard but packaging a mid round pick with BM for a pick a round or 2 lower might do for a team like the Rangers or Ottawa.
The wingers, outside of Leon & Dzingel will be challenged to score as you have. That would be a huge fail in summer #1.
The bottom 6 has too many slow skaters, especially down the middle.
I realize they aren't going to be able to add a bunch of high profile UFAs like Nyquist, Johansson & Ferland, but they can add one, whether its Dzingel (like you have) or Donskoi or Nyquist. They need to add couple/few bottom six that could surprise (like Chaisson). They pass on Rattie to sign a couple of guys like Aggostino, Pirri, Tyler Ennis or Ryan Carpenter. Maybe they pick up one or 2 guys like Connor Brown and/or Erik Haula from teams that have to cut payroll. I like Gelndenning in Detroit to find his way to Edmonton.

I understand the need to get better quickly, but I don't think Holland moves the 8th overall pick. In salary cap era, with expansion coming, that pick is worth its weight in gold. The trade adds scoring and forward depth, but RD becomes a black hole. Holland will have to see whats out there this summer before making a hasty deal involving a high draft pick.

No i did not. But I still don't think the move a 50 goal scorer for potential.....even if it clears cap space. Oiler fans bought into the "We'll trade a good, expensive player for a slightly less good player and use the cap space to add another player." That failed miserably.

Need to add for Leon. If NYR were to sign his as FA, compensation would be way more than a first and Namestinkov. That offer is way too low. At least another 1st rnd pick.

There is no one giving up a third round pick for Gagner. More like Gagner +3rd rnd pick for a 5th or 6th round pick.

Defence needs work. You don’t bring in 2 rookies on an already thin D. We’d to add a top 4 RD. I think your a little generous in the Burkovsky deal. No way he should be over $3.5.

Your thoughts
I'd say good luck with both those trades. A young, mobile, cost controlled D for a 30 year old, overpaid second line center who's on the back half of his career. thanks, but no thanks.
The Florida trade is somewhat reasonable in value, but rumors are that Florida is going after goalie Bob & Panarin. Doesn't leave much cash for PK, unless they miss out. And besides, does FLA really need another $9M right handed D. They have Ekblad in that #1 role. Doesn't seem like a fit.

Edmonton says no thanks. Our D is thin enough on the right side. If Larsson in the way to Toronto, Kapanen, Nylander or Johansson has to be part of the package. Whether Edmonton adds or leafs add depends on the other parts. Only way they move Larsson is if they’ve secured at least 1 top RD before hand. And even then.....

Tampa can’t take on salary. They already have to cut or money in = money out at worst. So they probably do Brodie for Callahan. Or palat for Brodie.

Pittsburgh trade is interesting too. Pens probably want a goalie coming back? Ridditch?
Frolik. Might have to give him away. Don’t expect a third round pick, let alone 2! Florida doesn’t want to take on any salary. Saving it all for Goalie Bob and Panarin.

Vegas MTL CHI trade
Larsson is our best RHD by far. But he’s a terrible puck mover. Our offense sputters before it starts cause forwards are picking passes out of their skates, picking up rimmed picks or chasing pucks off the glass. Our zone exits are not smooth and clean.
I ONlY move Larsson if I’ve already acquired his replacement. Someone like Dumba, Spurgeon or Pesce or simile. Ideally I have a new 2nd pairing guy in place also before I move Larsson.

Koskinen is at $4.5MM next year, so you have to go back to the drawing board anyways.
I agree we need wingers in the top 6 and center depth. It was depressing to watch how little offense ad creativity from the other lines. But (personally) a lot of that started with lack of puck moving D. McDavid and Leon can excel regardless cause they're genius. Plus they mostly got the top D......everyone else was stuck with the scrubs........II like Eakin and Haula. Maybe just 1 of them? Or forget Saad. His speed matches with McDavid though. Maybe take a flyer on another Chaisson.... Pirri? Or move Larsson to Toronto see if you can pry Kapanen or Johnsson ?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DomCholette</b></div><div>Than should I trade Nurse for Tatar & Kulak? (kulak can seriously skate with the puck... but creates alot of turnover)</div></div>
What? I'm not sure where you got that idea. Edmonton needs to IMPROVE the D, not make it worse. Nurse and Kelfbom are the only guys I would want to keep. But I'd move Klefbom in the right package for a stud D. All the others are expendable...as long as the D is improved through the trade or other trades. I don't know Kulak well, but he sounds like he'd be a 6th/7th guy. If he moves the puck and skates better than Petrovic....then I'd take him over Petrovic. Would Wild consider Spurgeon (extended) for something starting with Yamamoto or Puljujarvi? Would Carolina or Philly want to move some of their D for combination of draft pick or Yamamoto or Puljujarvi? Would Stralman sign on to be our second pairing RD? Miller is supposed to be available in Vegas...is he a fit?

Vegas MTL CHI trade
NYI, BOS and COL don't have a stud like Josi, doughty, Giordano or Hedmen.
I like the forward acquisitions, but the reason Edmonton has sucked for so long is cause the D can't break up a cycle, isn't mobile enough and can't make a pass. There's no transition game at all. This D-corp will get slaughtered. Doesn't matter how good the 2way forwards are. The forwards don't defend the rush and the center is only 1/3 of breaking the cycle down low. They don't need stud D. They need competent D that can skate and move the puck. Russel is competent D and can skate, but he cannot move the puck. Benning & Larsson are both competent but neither one is a strong puck mover. Pertovic isn't fast enough and can't move the puck. Sekera is better than all of them, but likely belongs in the bottom pairing after the injuries.

Leafs cannot take salary back. They have to ship salaries out. They will be looking to move Zaitsev, Brown & Kadri and take significantly cheaper players or draft picks back. I see Kharia, Bouchard or maybe Bear, as the only guys they might be interested in.

spending right up to cap Stralman and Ferland
i like that you felt a need to add a second pairing RD. too many of these only address Edm need up front. Our D is terrible at transition and first pass. I would even be inclined to move Benning and give some ice time to Bear/Persson/Jones in that 6th spot.
Not sure Brassard is the answer. He only had 23 points last year. I guess that isn't bad for 3rd line center, but maybe a little steep @ 2yrs and $3MM. I'd like to see a little more speed in the forward lineup.

Lovejoy is a UFA and he's 35yrs old. No guarantee he will be back.
I didn't say Dallas needs Zaitsev, said they "might be willing" to take him off Toronto's hands. He's a good player, cost controlled for 5 years. Maybe the contract is a $1M too much for Zaitsev, but it could be a lot worse.....

Edmonton future
3rd and 4th line center is still ugly. Needs to be improved. Cave is fine for 13th forward. Gagner might be okay as RWer, but he's way too slow and weak to be 3rd line center. Would prefer to see more speed added to lineup.
I think you're paying Chaisson & Khaira WAY too much.
JJ might get a modest bump from this year .... how do you give a guy an 85% raise for 3 goals? $850K should be more than reasonable.
Chaisson scored >20 goals, but he's been PTO last 3 years? Other than his ridiculous start, he was on pace for 10 ish goals? You're going to regret paying over $1.75MM for him.
