Thread: Why not wait
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dirtysaucedonny</b></div><div>The Rangers? Not really.

ANA has some nice pieces. Yes, they're aging. But the only ones really showing their age are Kesler and Perry, and it's only really because they're making so much money that everyone highlights it. Getzlaf is still a far better player than anyone on the Rangers have/had. Rakell/Silverberg is very comparable to Zuccarello/Zibanejad, so I will agree with you there. The forward depth is somewhat similar, although I would always take ANA's pedigree over the Rangers' depth any day. The Rangers had a couple of mediocre guys take a step forward this year, the Ducks had a couple established vets take a couple of steps back. That's about where the comparison ends.

Anaheim's defence is probably one of the deepest in the league and they have good young guys locked down on affordable, long term contracts (assuming Montour will be the same). The Rangers back-end is depleted at best Besides Skjei, they are very old and immobile, the complete opposite of Anaheim.

In goal, Anaheim has what the Rangers had 8 years ago: a stud goalie coming into his prime. The Rangers now how to live out their time with a declining goaltender (although still good), who will be 39 when his contract is up (yikes). There's no comparison there either.

Don't forget that despite how bad Perry and Kesler were last year, Anaheim was still a very good team and was top 3 in their division. This is not a bad team, and they are not near where the Rangers were last off-season.

Would it help to off-load Perry and Kesler? Maybe. But you'd get nothing for them. Why not keep them, hope they turn things around, and push to compete right now. The Rangers knew coming into last season they would likely be re-building soon and jumped ship mid-year. They picked up some nice pieces for McDonagh and especially Nash (WOW). Anaheim should be coming into this year looking to compete. I think they're a bubble playoff team.</div></div>

I agree mostly with what your saying, except the d being as good as you think. Fowler can't stay healthy and Manson makes me nervous with his positioning. Perry and kesler have a lot of term left on their contracts and getzlef with his size may show more his age next yr than you think. But maybe rackell would cost more than i think, i'm willing to admit that but the idea is to trade killorn to a team that probably is decent enough he would waive his NTC to and still get a player that has size that can play center or wing and be around his cap hit and be a step up. I just like most tampa fans haven't given up on koekkoek and believe that he just needs a real shot to become a true nhl defenseman and anaheim could use some speed and offense on that blueline for sure. You pair him with manson and i think you could have a really great d line as long as manson stays home and lets koekkoek do the pinching.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dirtysaucedonny</b></div><div>I agree with you that it would be a good deal for the Sens, but disagree that Wennberg "could easily turn out to be better than him" Duchene is a former 3rd overall pick and Olympic gold medallist. People tend to forget how good he is since he played on an atrocious Avalanche team two years ago and struggled for half this year with the Sens. I would not be surprised if he puts up a nice 25g,35a this year. Wennberg put up 13g, 46a in his best season, and is only 3 years younger than Duchene. There's absolutely no basis to think Wennberg has been, or ever will be, a better player than Duchene.

That being said, getting a first round pick, young playmaker and first round pick two years ago sounds great to me as an Ottawa fan That Duchene trade will haunt us for years if he doesn't resign, and this would definitely soften the blow. However, I do think Columbus ends up with a very good player out of this too that would also allow for PLD to play a bit more favorable minutes instead of taking on first line responsibilities as a 20 yr old. Plus, maybe all Panarin needs to be convinced is that there is a chance of winning and the team is trying to build up around him. If that's the case though, you won't want to be getting rid of Bob. Even if he has underwhelmed in the playoffs, CBJ isn't half the team they are without him.</div></div>

I get the risk but if salary issues mean they cant afford werenski/panarin/Bob I think you have to move Bob for a haul. I really do like Korpi and Elvis is in the pipline for Columbus, and it any of those two and Darling can make it work you gotta do it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dirtysaucedonny</b></div><div>Obviously I agree with you being an Ottawa fan. That being said, I do think people have tended to underplay Hoffman's value throughout this whole situation. Yes, IF the accusations are true, who would want to be associated with that? However, this guy is easily a 25 goal scorer for the next 5 years on the right team. Hell, if all this didn't happen, I think he would be a 25 goal scorer on a brutal Ottawa team for the next while. I think this is a golden opportunity for both teams. Hoffman is very affordable for that kind of production, and still has 2 years left. Maybe the Sens throw in a guy like Logan Brown or Colin White with Hoffman? If I was COL, seeing the season they just had and imagining getting Hoffman, Brown/White, Girard, Kamenev, Bowers, and a third round pick all for Matt Duchene, I take that and run. What if they say no to that and the sens keep Karlsson and get a good piece for Hoffman, then have a half decent season and aren't even a top-ten pick? Banking on another team failing is quite the risk, no matter how enticing it may seem.</div></div>

I just dont offer any solid assets until there is resolution with this. Last thing a team wants is to give up good assets for him and it drags all into the start of next season. It sounds like from Avs beat writer sources that they are very happy to just hold onto the pick from Ottawa. Unless the Sens are willing to extremely discount someone in order to get that pick back, the plans sounds like they will keep onto 2019 and hope to get a crack at Jack Hughes with it.

The value in hoffman trade is never a shot against his talent and ability, its just the potential distraction associated with an unresolved issue. But you are right if they do throw in another sweetner asset to go with Hoffman, then it gets more tempting bc at the very least if the Hoffman thing spirals out of control, you still have an asset like White kicking around so its not a complete back fire.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>dirtysaucedonny</b></div><div>I would definitely agree with your approach of "give me the farm". That being said, for Erik Karlsson, i don't want 6-7 guys that add up to around his value, I want 1-2 that are going to be bonafide NHL studs. This is the best defenceman in the world we are talking about, with another year left on his contract. Whoever trades for him is 95% certain they will be locking him down for the next 8 years, which the Sens brass should know. Personally, I really like the Avalanche in a Karlsson trade, but understand they likely won't be the ones going after him. If it's Vegas, I am walking away with at least Suzuki or Glass, a 2019 1st, a mid-range prospect and an under-24 roster player. Otherwise, I'm looking elsewhere. But, that's just how I would approach the situation. We'll likely trade him to the division rival Leafs for Matt Martin and watch him win the cup for 8 consecutive years in front of our face....Because, Ottawa.</div></div>

I look at it the same way as you, if I am losing 60-70points I would prefer a "hockey trade" with 60-70pts coming back the other way. I was just replying specifically to a Vegas trade. I would pass on Theodore, Miller, McNabb for the 3 other prospects instead of those guys. I'd much rather see Draisatl (who would never be included, 'cept Charelli) or RNH kind of EDM trade. I don't see Carolina or MTL having interest in moving their 2nd/3rd overalls in a Karlsson trade but that would hit the bonafide star I would want back. Get a 18 year old star for a 28 year old one, makes sense to me.

Still wish we could just start the year with Karlsson, Hoffman, Chabot, Duchene, Stone as the top 5/core and bring back positive sens media focused on the play of the 4th overall, how White/Brown start the year and any of the litter of youth breaking into the line up. Like normal offseason stuff
