Agreed, but I don’t think this is selling low - A (likely) lottery-pick, a high-2nd and 3rd is a pretty good haul for Laine, IMO. Sending RR out for another good asset is just a cherry on top, particularly if it’s a move that is predicated.
It’s legitimate to wonder if his value has already peaked, and I think it’s fair to take what you can get if it’s a good deal. This definitely isn’t on the level of some of the face-slaps we’ve seen around here.

Just have Dolzhenkov and Voronkov on a line together every night.
Only Pat Maroon would probably take the ice against them. Win every game by default.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ms39</b></div><div>This is great insight from someone I can assume is a real and knowledgable Columbus fan! So, thank you for engaging sincerely.
As an Islanders fan, and real believer in Lou, I think you take a center over a winger by any means necessary. (We're playing our best hockey of the season right now with 6 centers! Our best line—Cizikas-Horvat-Barzal—is all centers!) I think being able to move Voronkov and Johnson (and maybe even Sillinger, too) to the wing would help their development. Plus, you can still get some shifts in at center. Then you've got Jenner as another fill-in center who plays wing, and Kuraly as center depth.
(Not a disagreement with your assessment here. I just think it helps a club to have as many centers as possible, and then figure out where to put ’em.)</div></div>
Of course, and much appreciate your dive into this. Silly and Voronkov have gotten some play at the wing, and yes - Boone is a Swiss-army knife who can play anywhere.
FWIW, KJ is likely a career winger. He’s got the playmaking chops to cut it at C, but his somewhat lanky-frame has made it difficult to keep at C. He’s had face off trouble, and the two-way responsibility down the middle has shown to be a lot for him.

I like where you are going with the aggressiveness - I’ve long been upset at the number of times Jarmo did his “weaponize the cap,” schpiel, only to, well, not.
My hold up is the Kampf trade and the retention - I get the balance of cap with trading for him and retaining on Elvis, but doing that and then trading for Campbell feels redundant, and that’s before getting to also retaining on Grubauer (I.e. we just turned one $5.4M cap hit into three for a total of $10.6M). I’ve <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/5003890">danced on this before</a>, but I think an Elvis for Campbell 1-for-1 could work. The alternative is Elvis just gets bought out, which is a cap hit CBJ can take right now.
Laine does need to be moved, and as much as I feel he would kick ass in VGK, I don’t see CBJ being on Bill’s OK list for his NTC.
I actually think CBJ’s C depth is at the best it’s been in a long time. Fantilli-Sillinger-Voronkov-Kuraly is looking like it could be real, and that’s before CBJ likely end up with a Lindstrom or Cattan (or Celebrini?) after this draft.
As for Dillon? CBJ already have Guds as their obligatory “big-bodied D” signing. Voronkov is also built like <a href="https://theathletic.com/4489581/2023/05/04/blue-jackets-dmitri-voronkov/?source=user_shared_article" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">semi-truck,</a> and will learn to throw the body more as he gets experience. Mateychuk almost made the team out of camp this year, and he’ll likely slot in next season.

Offseason Tinker Toys
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brady_t12</b></div><div>I think it's just so hard to ballpark Laine's trade value right now. He's missed a large majority of this season and has been so up and down his whole career, but I swear he has the potential to pot 50 in a year in the right scenario. Maybe he meshes with McMichael or Lapierre and just lights it up. I can't see this offer being beaten out by anyone else. I think the 2024 1st and a low level prospect should be more than enough given his injury history and where Columbus is right now in their rebuild.</div></div>
Laine was always an awkward fit with CBJ - they only traded for him because Jarmo caved into <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USs9AXkGpMs" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Dubois' shenanigans</a> and made a panicked trade. Fluky injuries and shortened seasons have really hurt him, and his timeline doesn't line up with CBJ, particularly considering he doesn't have the term JG does.
He's still been roughly a .80 PPG guy with CBJ, which is saying something considering the mess CBJ have been since they got him, and the expectations they put on him to be That Guy, which he isn't (and that's OK!). Put him in the right system, and I totally agree he can be a legit first-line weapon again.
And yeah, I'm still in shock over how universally liked this trade is. That just...doesn't happen on CapFriendly. Or even the internet.

UFA Ideas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaseyFlyman</b></div><div>Laine was top-3 in team scoring each of the last two seasons in Columbus, something he only did in Winnipeg in 2016-17 and 2017-18. He had 1.000 points per game in 2021-22 and 0.945 points per game in 2023-23, which are scoring rates he never reached in Winnipeg (even during his 44 goal campaign, at 0.854 points per game). His Corsi for % has held steady or increased in his time in Columbus, while blowing his teammates out of the water.
"Trending down since Winnipeg traded him" is completely ignoring the games he's played when healthy, and plainly just false when you dive into anything beyond his injury history. He's not a playdriver, and the expectation was that he'd come to Columbus to be "the guy", but he's not that and never has been. He's a really great complimentary scorer, and has rounded out his game much more in Columbus. His health/availability to play, especially this year (where he's had a couple really fluky/dirty injuries) is entirely the reason for a bad perception. Giving up on him is a mistake, when he's been a key contributor and elite player when on the ice. Doing so when his trade value is at its lowest would be catastrophic.</div></div>
Not worth the energy to counter trade-negging.
"Here's a Laine trade."
"That's not a good Laine trade, and he's not available."
"Yes it is and yes he is."

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>No one is paying you that for Laine.
It would also not surprise me if they moved him out to make way for the mass of younger players they have. Especially with another pick looking like 4OA currently this year.
It's not easy to move 8.7 mil of cap out. CBJ would never retain on that without a serious reason to do so, just for all kind of reasons. Small market team, not wanting to pay guys to play on other teams, future cap issues etc (it is 2 years)... and a large return most likely isn't happening as few teams have the cap space.
So a large return is kind of out of the question there.
To say they wouldn't move him is kind of unrealistic. He doesn't have a future in CBJ and CBJ knows that. In 2 years he hits FA he's not coming back to CBJ and with all the young talent CBJ has there really isn't room for him. It's not like he's some Vet leader who helps the team out. He's not, and never will be that kind of player. And to move him the year after will bring the same level of return. So it's just saving the team money if they did it this year.
Robertson is no Jake, and is every bit the 3rd liner at best that Puustinen is and neither one of them belongs on a line with Sid.
The only thing that will happen is he'll get checked to the ground left and right like Sheary did. We already know Sid being the biggest player on that line isn't the best thing.</div></div>
So. Again.
This entire trade is premised on the idea of a trade centered around an asset that is not even on the market.
Yes, there are many a beneficial reason to trade Laine, but this entire loss of a trade is premised on the presupposition that he *needs* to be traded.
Not the case, my dude.
Like it said, meet the ask, or move on.

Cool! Problem is, you are trying to trade for an asset that is not even on the market.
So…why would any team trade a player at their lowest value when they are not even trying to trade them? Add in PIT’s low-end prospect pool, and ya’ll are just swimming in No’s. So, I mean, Yager+ or CBJ just say “OK” and don’t care.

I see it as Elvis-for-Kemper in a change-of-scenery swap, and the rest of the package for Laine. So, a mid-1st, a late 2nd, and a few lottery ticket prospects?

He’s been a .80 PPG guy since he got here, and that factors the post-trade bump and this year from hell. At $8.7M on a short term, not that bad a contract.
Problem is, CBJ aren’t going to trade him at his lowest value, if they do at all. Particularly if they retain, I could see a stupid overpay for him at TDL if he rebounds.
