I like that. Our d prospect pool is now low, with all these guys having arrived, so vet Strahlman is a nice pickup.
And I'd love for Morin to be in lineup, (or UFA Adam McQuaid) for size, but think Hagg a safer bet
But I'd roll with that 7.
I just worry we don’t have enough speed at forward = Kapanen and Frost in starting 12 please

Philly with TOR trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>I know pmwalker and I disagree on the value of Zaitsev, who I think is a solid number 4 RH dman. But even most TOR fans are willing to trade him in their proposals for a 4th or a 5th rounder.
Gudas is a solid third pairing guy, that TOR defense definitely needs. Strong, physical vet who can play PK and bang bodies.
Zaitsev is, IMO, worth Gudas straight up. Kapanen more than makes up the difference, (and any leaf fans that think he’ll re-sign for less than 3.5mil AND that he won’t get offer sheeted are fooling themselves).
The Leafs get at least 5mil in cap space, a solid, physical defender without a long term salary and three good prospects, whereas the flyers get some needed speed on the wing and hopefully a solid top defender, (IMO, pmwalker).
The leaf fans can think that Marleau will be an easy move even for nothing: (considering his age, salary, his “heart”, and the teams (who already have bad contracts and old guys and aren’t “that close” that Marleau in his swan song will help) he’ll waive his NMC to), they’re kidding themselves. They need cap space and need something on the defense. This helps with both those while retaining their key pieces and not reliant on a hopeful trade of marleau.</div></div>
If Zatisev is in our top 4 next years we have regressed and Fletcher should be shown the door. Only additions I’d consider to our defense are Trouba, Spurgeon or perhaps Strålman if we can’t swing a trade for the previous 2.

Roster Put Together Just For Fun
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fly_iggles_fly</b></div><div>Yeah you reached pretty deep for these. And neither one says anything at all about G being good defensively. The first one, which looks to be from his rookie year, makes a brief mention of giving effort on all 200 ft of the ice. The 2nd one is about JVR and how G helped him get going. Not even any remote mention of defense. I watch NHL Network all the time, and no one I've seen has ever called Giroux a good defensive player. Over the past couple of years he has certainly made a visible effort to get better defensively. He has gotten a little better, but he still just is not good at it. And yes, whenever he makes a good play the Flyers broadcast team will highlight it. They are a homer broadcast team, and that's fine, I like it like that. I've watched nearly every game of Giroux's career. At most I've missed maybe a handful of his games. And I'm telling you, he's a great player and I love the guy, but he is far from good defensively. It's hard to find stats that say that. There are advanced stats out there, which I am not a big fan of. Any stat that attempts to measure defensive ability relies to some degree on non individual factors. And commentators on NHL Network and such are reluctant to criticize players and would prefer to just talk more about what they are good at. Especially star players. You can believe what you want to believe, but I'm extremely confident in my observation that Giroux is a sub par defensive player.</div></div>
So if say, Giroux had multiple years where he has gotten Selke votes, would that also speak to this deficiencies on defense, or would that just prove you ever further out of your element? Bro, Im not saying Giroux is a top 10 defensive forward, what I am saying is that he is not a burden, he is not a liability, he is not deficient on defense. His advanced stats speak to it, but also his peers giving him votes for the best defensive forward award in the NHL, multiple years in a row no less!, say this. here are some links for your perusal:
<a href="https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/voting-2016.html" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/voting-2016.html</a>
<a href="https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/voting-2017.html" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/voting-2017.html</a>
<a href="https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/voting-2018.html" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/voting-2018.html</a>
Top 30 every single year for the last 3 years in a row, including number 16 in terms of Selke votes the year he switched to wing, sounds like I was spot on with my assessment of Giroux's defensive skills.

Yikes alleged PIT deal

My friend who is a Pens fan said he's pretty sure Kessel was quoted as saying "i'm not sure if I'd want to play in Minnesota", so apparently he'd have to waive his NTC to allow this trade to go through. But my main point is that it seems doubtful Minnesota would acquire Kessel with intent to turn around and then trade him someplace else. Just seems like that would be a risky proposition at best. Unless this turns out to be a 3 way trade, which I suppose could be possible.</div></div>
Sounds like your friend is right!

The biggest problem with his contract is the term (5 years left). He is an NHL calibre RD and he successfully nullified the Bergeron line these playoffs (paired with Muzzin) which is something other teams wish they could say (I'm looking at Carolina here).</div></div>
I get that the TML are in a cap crunch...
but Zaitsev is pretty much the only RHD in the organization right now (outside of Liljegren who's still a couple of years out). So you wanting to trade him (with picks and prospects attached) for anything goes to show how bad his contract really is.
There are other ways to get cap relief.. like trading away a forward. Something you have plenty of.

Some of these takes a laughable. If Zatisev was indeed a top 6RD as stated wouldn’t the Leafs just move another contract to accommodate the million or so he’s overpaid? Especially a team in need of right handed defenders. ?. Seems Leafs management doesn’t even think he’s a top 6 guy or they’d just keep him and accommodate the salary. Does make you wonder

tl;dr Zaitsev is A LOT better than this site would lead you to believe.
Gudas is nothing to write home about
Bracco could be a fantastic playmaker at the nhl level

Then why does every single Leaf AGM on here include a Zaitsev trade? Keeping in mind that the TML right defensive side is extremely thin. He can't be that good

Most interesting team in hockey
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fly_iggles_fly</b></div><div>Yeah, we have a 2 year window with Hart on minimum salary. I'm not sure we have the horses to make a serious run within that window though. We have cap available this year, but don't really think we can afford to make long term UFA commitments. I think we can possibly afford one top UFA and still keep the ability to manage our RFA over the next couple years, maybe. The hard salary cap makes it very difficult to manage a team these days and I'm very interested myself to see what Fletcher does this offseason and over the next couple years. If he isn't careful, we could find ourselves in a worse position than Toronto is in right now, with lots of young talent, but no ablilty to sign them under the cap limit.</div></div>
Yes too much age, term, and money on some of your top players, and a bit of a age gap, with not too much talent in between, ghost and coutiere and not much else in that 24 to 27 category and a little too much too young or too old. Interesting times ahead, fan base probably wouldn’t appreciate one of the big guns for prospects, but that might be possibly what’s needed. There’s about 6 flyers that would fit rather nice in wpg lol, can you name them.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>fly_iggles_fly</b></div><div>As a Flyers fan, there is absolutely no way I'm trading Sanheim, unless I get absolutely bowled over with an offer, and this one surely doesn't qualify. I'm skeptical that Hayes will come in as low as $6m/yr. The cap is expected to go up again, and there are quite a few teams with free cap money to spend. I see him getting $7M, maybe even more. Additionally, I definitely see Fletcher wanting to sign a veteran goalie. I'm pretty sure he's even said he intends to do that. So this all adds up to your proposed roster not fitting under the cap, in my estimation.</div></div>
I’m a jets fan, and scooping a couple Manitoba boys before philly locks them up longterm, more my goal than a intriguing philly build. One can only hope. Looking forward to seeing what philly does though, lots of potential for a quality run. Hope they don’t keep messing with it and monster free agent contracts that are going to get in the way before the build is complete. Sure nice having a goalie on elc to spread money elsewhere

Eh, I wouldn't like it. We have a million left shot wingers (Parise, Zucker, Donato, Fiala, Greenway, Foligno, and probably Rask since we have too many centers) and it was a major problem scoring off the rush for us this past year. I can't tell you how many times we could have had an easy bang-in goal on the right side but our winger was a left shot and he flubbed his stick and we missed an easy goal. Trading for JVR would only exacerbate the issue, we need right shot wingers desperately.

Spurgeon and Kadri
Hm... I'm not a huge fan of that Spurgeon trade. We have tons of depth LD with Seeler, Soucy, and hopefully Hunt if we re-sign him (which we probably will) so I don't think Hagg is that great of a fit. We could use a LD with top 4 upside but I just don't think Hagg will be anything more than a career 3rd pairing guy. If we're getting picks I think our owner will force Fenton to get them for this year's draft. I understand you can't have conditional picks for this year's draft since the signing period is post-draft, but having the center piece of the trade as the conditional pick isn't a great idea for us (even though I think Spurgeon would re-sign in Philly especially since Chuck is the one that gave Spurgeon a chance to become the player he is today). I think something revolving around that 11th overall pick or a good prospect and maybe a conditional 2nd or something in next year's draft is more realistic. So basically it'd look like Spurgeon for 11 OA and a conditional 2020 2nd based on Spurgeon re-signing.
