Devils wouldn’t take Erne for Wood. I’m not a big wood fan but they’re not even close.</div></div>
No worries you can keep wood then

What would it take to get Johnny Hockey

I think GMJR overpaid for his guy. He wanted him and pulled the trigger early. I would hope we would have hung up when they asked even for a first if Friedman’s report is true we talked to them.</div></div>
Totally agree with you. It'll be interesting to see what Fitz does as his first move as GM. My gut is telling me he'll have a cautious offseason and draft approach.

Hughes or Hischier are the only things that interest Calgary but New Jersey wouldn’t give them up, so a trade won’t be able to happen

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kdp23</b></div><div>I don’t disagree at all was just wondering.
They were apparently in the mix for kapanen which makes more sense because he has a couple more years plus Rfa at the end of his deal but glad we did give up a first and prospect for him.
I am of the thought that if they use assets for anyone it would be players of that nature but they’re more likely to just continue to add assets by weaponizing their cap space and continue to be in the lottery for the next couple of years at least unfortunately</div></div>
I agree that the Devils should "weaponize" their cap space. There are teams who need to dump cap, Jersey could get some competent veterans "free" and hope their current ELCs and picks develop. The Metro division just seem too powerful in the next two years even with Gaudreau for the Jersey to make the playoffs.

another year in the lottery
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kdp23</b></div><div>Just wondering your idea on where the devils are at and what you want them to do. Are you of the viewpoint that we aren’t competing for years to come so just move out all the veterans worth anything for picks? And then use all of those picks And see if any hit. don’t move any for nhl caliber players.</div></div>
It's a tough situation to be in. I am of the viewpoint that this team isn't going anywhere for at least another 2 years. Clearly we're going to have to be patient with Hughes, and I think 2 years from now he will be hitting his stride and living up to expectations as an electrifying franchise C (if not, the Devils have a serious problem). This team only goes as far as Hughes takes them imo. So they should be moving some of the older guys for picks, I don't think Palmieri fits the window, if you can move Subban for anything you do it. I would also be looking at moving on from Wood, Zacha, Butcher, maybe Severson, etc. simply to move in a new direction, these guys have been okay but certainly haven't become what most people were expecting.
There simply isn't enough high end talent on the roster / in the system and the best way to acquire it is through the draft, any drafted players in the next 2 years will also fit that same window as the rest of our young core. That said if you can add a young player with top 6 (F) or top 4 (D) potential that's cost controlled without giving up a ton then you've got to look at it. You need to have some talent around the young players to help them grow and develop but no I would not be moving picks and prospects for anybody over the age of 26.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>justaBoss</b></div><div>Indeed.
Also there's a familiar coach in Hynes in there, since he coached Devils just last year.</div></div>
That is a great point as well. Based on nothing but my own opinion I think the appeal of lower pressure markets with good teams is very appealing to him.

2020 NJD - revamp D through trades sign Hoffman
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kdp23</b></div><div>I wouldn’t mind taking a shot at Risto either but I don’t think devils front office would go for that. They’ve become more analytically driven in recent years or at least have hired people with that intention.
Devils left side with butcher and smith would be so small that’s it’s hard not to want some size back there even though it’s not seen a necessity in today’s game. I still believe you need some of that grit at least for your kill</div></div>
You’ve got three years til PK and Schneider come off and three first round picks. Get assets for Butcher and Palmieri. Use your cap space to take on a couple of bad contracts that expire when or before PK and Schneider do. Pick up some good young nearly NHL ready assets with those bad contracts. Re tool. Minnesota and Rado both say no to those deals. And that’s okay cause I think you can do better being patient. Size and grit can be found in free agency. Stack up on talent then build around it
