Thread:
Habs Get 2nd Overall without giving 22 or 14
There's no chance this happens.
If the Devils trade the pick, they'll ask for either Caufield or Suzuki in return, which is not happening.
Let say, for the sake of the discussion, that there would be a way to get the 2nd overall without including of of these 2.
It starts with either the 1st round of Calgary or the 1st of Florida (next year)... If not both.
You then need to add your best prospect, which currently would be Guhle.
To that, you need to probably add 1 the following top prospect/young player:
Farrell, Barron, Romanov
As well as 1 of the following lower prospect/young player:
Ylonen, Harris, Norlinder, Primeau, Kidney, Roy, Mailloux, Struble
You'd also need to add a roster player that can help them right now out of the following:
Evans, Rem Pitlick, Poehling.
If you want to send them a higher salaried player like Anderson or Petry (I really doubt they'd entertain Drouin, Hoffman or Armia) instead of Evans/Pitlick/Poehling, you probably have to throw in an extra pick to make them take it.
And, even then, I'm not even sure that would be enough as I really doubt they entertain it without including Caufield/Suzuki.
Tuch as little to no value.
Petry isn't worth much to them as they aren't in a position to win now so you'd have to pay them to take his salary (you won't have to do that if you trade him to a contender).
Ylonen and Struble aren't enough high prospect to move you from 25-ish to 2nd overall.
Without higher prospect like Guhle + 1 of Barron/Farrell/Romanov included, there's not even going to be a discussion IMO.

I fully agree about his contract being atrocious.
I chose Vancouver as it's probably one of the few teams Gally would wave is NTC to go to.
Vancouver gets a local guy who's a leader and could help the young players they have coming in.
Now, maybe the Habs would have to pay a bit more and/or retain a bit of salary for this to happen.
Rumours were that Vancouver was already shopping Garland and I think he fits more the new vision of the Habs than Gally does.
This probably has more chance to go through if Benning is still there than it does now but you never know. We've seen weirder things happen.

Difference is, Montreal doesn't need to get rid of Weber's contract and I doubt they do so if they have to pay for it.
Furthermore, you got a team in Arizona who's cash strapped and apparently going to move in a College rink for the next 3 years.
You're telling me that this owner wouldn't be interested in saving over 25m of real money over the next 4 years in that context and that he wouldn't be willing to give an asset to safe that kind of money?
Considering how they have 7 picks in the 1st two rounds this year, letting go of one of them to safe 25m doesn't sound like much of an overpayment to me.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind trying to reunite the band (Suter/Weber) for a year or two and go all-in.
I wouldn't go past that though.
Suter is still an upgrade on Chiarot so I'd give it a try.

Riiiiiiiiight...
Lehkonen is already getting 2.4m... He's good for 10 to 15 goals (while playing on the bottom 6 and not getting any PP time), he doesn't take penalties, he's quite good at killing them and shutting down the opposing players. I'm not saying he gets a raise but he's not dropping under 2m.
Gusev? People have been on Drouin's back since he signed here. Gusev is the same type of player but not as good. He doesn't fit the mold of what Bergevin is trying to build.
As for Getzlaf coming because of Perry, we're not even sure Perry's coming back. And, even if he his, I didn't see Getzlaf go to Dallas last year to play with him or move his NTC this year to come to Mtl and reunite with him. I really doubt that where Perry is playing has any influence on what Getzlaf is doing with his life.

I doubt Lehkonen takes that kind of a paycut.
Saad is most likely getting 5m per year.
Getzlaf isn't coming to Mtl, especially at that tag price.
I wouldn't touch Tarasenko as he's had major shoulder injuries over the last 3 years (or, at least, I wouldn't touch him at that kind of price).

Isn't good? Hasn't been for years?
He averages over 50pts per 82 games played over the last 4 years.
How many forwards are doing over 50 pts per year? Roughly 90, give or take, depending on which year you're looking at.
With 31 teams currently and 3 forwards per line on each team, that means that he's either one of the least performing (on average) on a first line (as there are 93 forwards playing on a first line in the league) or one of the top performer on a 2nd line.
Either way, I call this a good player.
People need to stop treating him as if he was trash; GMs are giving up high picks and top prospects each year for 50pts players.

He plays way bigger than is seize and he is extremely important IMO
Plays PK, against the best lines, perfect 4th liner who can play anywhere in the line up
I agree adding Coleman for an upgrade, but keep Lehky and let Armia walk</div></div>
Well, Vegas HAS to take someone from the Habs.
Most people are saying it would either be Allen (2.8m) or Chiarot (3.5m).
A 3rd round to take Byron over Allen (600k difference) isn't that much of a reach. Make it a 2nd round if that's what it takes.
Seattle probably doesn't even need Allen as they'll have other options as far as goalie goes. In that case, you'd pay a 3rd so they take Byron over Chiarot.
The Wild might decline, that's why I listed other possibilities. I'm just not going to make a roster for every single one of them as the trade would be similar to this no matter which of the other options would be. Would you do a similar trade for Ristolainen? Dunn? Graves? Or do you have another realistic target on 'd' that might work in a trade for Drouin?
As for Lehkonen, you are correct, the team could swap him with Armia; you can let Armia walk and give Lehkonen the same contract.
To me, both players are pretty much interchangeable though so I was trying to get an asset back for Lehkonen while keeping Armia instead of having him walk and have nothing to show for it.
I'm good either way though. You keep one of the 2 and you replace the one who leaves with a guy like Coleman or Saad.

I'd like to keep him but, he will most likely request a trade and that's what best for his sanity.
If he's traded, I'd hope that they get a dman for him. Maybe someone like Ristolainen in Buffalo or Dunn or Graves from Seattle (if they end up being taken by Seattle at the expansion draft). Maybe Dumba?

Eh.... Putting him in the AHL doesn't clear all of his cap space.
Go check the Canucks page buddy.
By putting him in the AHL, they get part of his salary in cap relief so, instead of counting for 6m$ on the cap, he only counts for 4,875,000$
So, unless my math is wrong or I missed something, Dallas would be trading away Faksa and his 3,250,000$ salary to ADD an extra 1,625,000$ on their cap and, then, on top of that, you need to replace Faksa on the roster. Even if you take someone at minimum salary, you still have to add an extra 750k. So, this would actually end up costing at least 2,375,000$ more for Dallas.
I don't think that moving up 5 spots in this year's draft is worth it.

There's little to no chance you get Danault and Lehkonen to sign those contracts. Hamilton will also most likely get more than that.
I wouldn't trade for Tarasenko with his shoulder problems; this is too much of a gamble and all of the Blues fans on here will tell you they don't want Drouin and he doesn't fit on their team (at least, that's what they've told me on multiple occasions when I tried to trade him there).
I kind of like the Werenski trade although Columbus might be asking for more than that. The issue is that you get him for 1 year and, then, his qualifying offer is 7m$. Though to do when you'll also have to resign KK and Suzuki during the same summer.
The other thing that doesn't work out is that you're right against the cap with only 20 players on your roster instead of 23. This means that, all year, you can't carry any backup player (aside from the 2nd goalie). If someone gets injured or is sick, you can't call anyone up to replace them.

There's no way we take a 2.66m hit on the cap for the next 8 years!
With players like Suzuki, Caufield, Romanov, etc to resign in a couple of years, that dead cap will cause too many issues.
I wouldn't give a 1st for negociating rights. He's that's the price once Hamilton is signed, maybe, but not just to get the chance to work on a contract without guarantee he's signing.

I don't see the Panthers doing the Huberdeau trade; they are in win-now mode. Huberdeau is one of their top players and has a very good contract. They might consider this if they were rebuilding but not at this time.
Also doubt that Lehkonen and Armia are taking those kind of pay cut to come back.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Bergevin take a run at Saad if he's available. He likes his ex-Hawks + he plays the way we've seen to team play during playoffs.
Dunn or Murray would be good pick ups especially if we lose Chiarot or Edmundson to the expansion draft.
I also wouldn't mind a swap of Ristolainen for Drouin (maybe not 1 for 1). Salaries are pretty equal, Drouin is most likely to ask out of town and Ristolainen can benefit from a change of scenery. It would also give the team a younger option on the right side as Weber and Petry aren't getting any younger and all of our top prospect on D are playing the left side.
