Also, Assuming VAN re-signs Edler you'd think they'd be comfortable with Hughes and Edler each quarterbacking a PP unit. No?

2. We got muzzin for 2 seasons
3. (You missed this one) how many roster players were moved in the muzzin Trade, answer... zero.
Kapanen is worth a 1st and a b prospect so that leaves you with a b prospect owing. Now you need to do the math on how much better is spurgeon better than muzzin then divide that by 2 since it is a 1 year rental.</div></div>
I think Spurgeon is significantly better than Muzzin. Assuming we could re-sign him I'm comfortable with the deal.
Got no problem paying less though! :)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jamiepo</b></div><div>That spurgeon Trade is very bad for the leafs future. I think if you replace liljegren with lindgren it’s a bit better.
I am okay with the basis of kapanen for spurgeon. I think this fits both teams needs. With spurgeon being a rental I don’t see us needing to add much in the way of futures as we are moving a roster player. I think that kappy and a conditional first on re sign would be much closer to fair.
Think of it this way. Spurgeon plays for the leafs for one season walks in ufa and goes back to the wild. They now have spurgeon and kappy and the leafs are left with nothing. If wild were to retain in spurgeon I would add a 2nd.</div></div>

I used the Muzzin deal as a comparable and increased the offer based on:
1. Spurgeon is better
2. We get him for a full season.

That's fine. But if Lindell is worth $5.8 x 6, i'm sure Leafs could find someone to take Zaitsev for next to nothing. Particularly after we pay the July 1st $3 million dollar bonus.

I understand all of those words individually, and I still have no idea what you’re trying to say.

Johnsson & Kapanen will be RFAs with no arb rights, and no leverage. Expect their AAV to be significantly lower than 3 mil.

Holl is a 6’3” Puck moving RD signed for 2 yrs at league minimum. Top pair on the Calder Cup winning Marlies. At 26 he’s an overage rookie. No reason whatsoever that he doesn’t get every opportunity at a 6/7 D-role this year and/or next.

Faceoff % is frequently over-rated, but not when you win %60. Could help the PK if he beats out Lindholm for the 4C spot.

Signing Bonus Leverage
Travis Yost's recent piece got me thinking. Taking a look at Nylander comparables (Forsberg, Ehlers, Pastrnak), only Pastrnak recieved any signing bonuses.
If im Dubas/Pridham/Gilman do i not try to leverage heavy duty pre-lockout signing bonuses to save on AAV?
I don't know specifics on signing bonus rules, but something like a six year deal, where the maximum allowable signing bonuses are stuffed into the first 3 years.
Makes sense for both in some ways. Thoughts?

Ideas from the Athletic
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>S1LV3R</b></div><div>Trading for any Top 1-2 RHD is a losing battle. Nobody wants to give them up, and if they do, they want a king's ransom.
Every other team has had to draft them, which I think the leafs should do.
Not every 1RHD needs to be a top pick either:
Weber - 2nd round (49th)
Faulk - 2nd round (37th)
Subban - 2nd round (43rd)
Chara - 3rd round (56th)
The leafs would be better off using their 1st and 2nd picks going after D, then trying to trade for one and breaking the bank/roster to do it.</div></div>
I agree that we shouldn't be bending over backwards to trade for a #1D, but its pretty ironic that amongst the list of D-men you chose to illustrate your point 3/4 were acquired by their current team via trade. :squinty

I don't think Leafs will do this, but if Jake hist 50 points again market value will likely exceed 6.5M.
Really just demonstating the ability to retain #34, #29 and #16 without too much difficulty. Also, i forgot Carrick, so we can add him in somewhere. Ozhganov, Holl, Rosen, Borgmann and Liljegren are wild cards at this point.

Fair point. I guess we'll need to split Hamuis' $4 million between a D and a C.

2017-2018 projected opening night lines
I made one on 'pro mode' LTIR and came up with basically the exact same line-up, with almost 3 times the cap-space. The only differences were Kapanen over Fehr (i think Fehr could be done as an NHLer), and Dermott making the team whilst (burying/waiving) Marchenko.
I also would have to flip Hainsey and Zaitsev based on the recent Babcock comments.
