Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 6 - Nearly Playoffs
For the remaining games I'd start Woll vs Detroit and Florida and Sammy vs Tampa.
As of right now, for me Sammy is the game 1 starter but of course the leash is going to be short.
None of these goalies have shown they can steal games or series so...my expectations for goaltending is to keep the team in the game, nothing more, nothing less.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Jim Balsille made an attempt to bring the Coyotes (or was it Nashville) to Hamilton much later than 1992...I'm guessing 2004. The city of Hamilton made a presentation in 1990 at the expansion meeting, but no owner, put up even 100,000 dollars to make a presentation. Hey I think a Hamilton team would have been successful, but obviously people with money.Ron Joyce of Tim Hortons. was a candidate didn't want to pony up the money.
As we saw with the Sens, and their expansion team, it was shell game, based upon the arena and real estate. Ottawa was lucky to hold onto their franchise the later owners bailed out the bankrupt Sens.
Even Tampa had financial problems with their initial owner. They were bailed out by the current owner too.
A former business associate, talked about bringing a team to Markham Ontario. He had the money for a franchise, (in the Seattle expansion) but wanted the city of Markham to give him the land for an arena, and to pay any operating deficients for the arena. The city said no.
Don Cherry? Don't know if relying facts in his book. Don is just is trying to portray his "blue collar image" of defending Canada and the people of Hamilton. The folks in Hamilton still blame Leafs ownership for whatever reason.</div></div>
Hamilton was an option for Balsile but if I'm remembering correctly, he actually wanted to move the team to Kitchener-Waterloo.
Remember NYI ownership issues before Charles Wong took over? Yeah disastrous.
Before Pittsburgh got Crosby/Malkin/the new arena there was talk of the Penguins leaving Pittsburgh.
Before Terry Pegula took over the Buffalo Sabres, they heading towards relocation too.
All under Gary Bettman. It's time...move on Gary.

I know a team in Hamilton or Quebec City would bring in a lot more revenue than Arizona and maybe other existing teams. As for "inclusivity", it depends on what you mean. If you're referring to the "Pride Nights", remember that they were a disaster last season and Provorov jerseys sold out after he stood up against it.</div></div>
Pride Nights, Canadian hockey fans, the handling of the presence of racism at various levels within the NHL.
These things are all encompassing and really very easy to address but instead we have players leading the charge on these issues where the league should be the one taking the charge, especially if NHL HQ really believes that the league and sport is globally for everyone.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>I'm no fan of Bettman and the NHL executive. But the facts are the NHL owners, hire Bettman and his cronies. The owners have to power to get another commish. The NHL owners are the ones vote to allow franchises to join the league. Unfortunately there are so many owners who got into the league because of Bettman, they are his allies. Plus NHL owners just love dividing up the expansion fees with no respect that failing franchises cost money eventually.</div></div>
I realize that, it's just too bad these owners don't have long-term vision for success regarding franchises because if they did, they would make more money via fees, gate and TV revenue, nevermind the merchandise sales. It requires patience and vetting potential owners properly as opposed to what Bettman and company have done.
There's not just expansion failures. This commissioner can't even get inclusivity right which BTW would help bring in more revenue but hey, let's alienate groups of people based on how business has been conducted in the past.
A big eff you to that Arizona franchise.

The only thing Sammy is 100% consistent at is giving up bad goals and sometimes floundering all together. Just look at his career playoff numbers. Even vs Tampa he had 2 really bad games. Vs Florida his numbers looked better but terrible goals killed him. He's not trust worthy. Never has been and this season is an exclamation point on that. It's nuts how everyone just ignores that.</div></div>
I was one of the first to call Sammy inconsistent but I'm also not blind to that either. Ride the hot hand until it's not hot. Woll has been inconsistent since his injury and no doubt he's the goalie of the future but game 1 starter is pretty clear.

And considering how many options he has currently for the 4rth line and the way he was playing his guys at the Florida/Tampa game, he's either:
1. Looking to see whether he has 3 or 4 lines he can roll, essentially seeing if he needs to run 11/7 or:
2. Holding his cards to himself because he knows any visible decision he makes will be overanalyzed, kind of like what Florida did last year and MTL did in '21</div></div>
Man...you are talking like Leafs are the only team that has dealt with injuries. Injuries happen but still doesn't mean you shy away from experimenting early in the season but have a solid plan that every player should be locked in on once the season is down to 30 games left.
How long has Keefe been the coach? Every season it seems to be the same song and dance. It's almost like he and the team is on auto pilot early on and then come March they realize "oh **** we need to have a solid plan of how we are going play in the playoffs".
Such a loser mentality..

It's one thing to try things early in the season to try to find things that work, it's completely different with 10-ish games left. All I'm saying is...things should already be figured out and it's supposed to be about locking down on good habits so that when the playoffs begin, it's second nature and it's not something players are still iffy about.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>That's a Keefe issue more than anything, defending a lead with Reaves out on the ice is obviously ridiculous.
However, game 1 vs Florida is 100% going to get out of hand. It'll be nuts. Having Reaves in the lineup to run everyone is going to be a good idea. Game 2 he can come out and back in for game 3. I think it was Adam Oats on Kyper and Bourne who was saying those are the two really emotional games. The first game gets silly, and then the 2nd game calms down and then when you switch back to the other teams barn it gets silly again. Then it'll be calm again. As calm as playoff hockey gets anyways. I don't know who comes out, maybe it is Jarnkrok since he's missed so much time. Also injuries will happen as well.</div></div>
For all the people who think Keefe is not an issue or don't have problems with him as the coach, Reaves being out during the final minutes of a game just points out why he isn't the coach that will elevate/inspire this team to win in the playoffs.
As for using Reaves in the playoffs? Absolutely will need to have him in some games to keep the rats of other teams in check but definitely not a every game player for sure.
Goaltending is tricky because Woll is the guy of the future but he definitely hasn't earned the game 1 start. There's also Matt Murray and how he's had his surgery so...maybe he is a real option after whatever conditioning stint he goes through with the Marlies.
I guess the goalie stuff will depend on how Samsonov looks in game 1.

Honestly why i'm leaning to bringing back Sammy on a 1-2 year deal
As people were going Woll/Hildeby or Woll/Murray or Woll/Jones as the tandem next year
Oh boy NTU lul.
Woll's got a bright future but man rn he aint it especially come game 1 against whoever we face

Idon't think it's a guarantee that Sammy comes back, especially if he plays well in the remaining games and plays well in the playoffs. He may prioritize getting a big payday coming from having a season where he was actually on waivers but bounced back.
Also...he is an inconsistent goaltender. It's what he was in Washington and here it's been the same story so unless he comes back at the same cap hit as he is now, Leafs might be looking at other options.
Now as far as Jones goes...same deal to be the 3rd goalie, no problems with that.

Over the last 5-6 games that Woll has played, one thing is very clear: Leafs will need a goalie who should challenge Woll for the starters job next season and there's a couple reasons for this. Injury history should be a major factor but another reason is that Woll is a young player learning the ups and downs of winning and losing in the best league in the world.
Will probably need a 3rd goalie too if Hildeby is not going to be an Injury fill-in.

Keefe has never properly taken advantage of the last change advantage and that has bothered me alot.
If you as a coach can't figure out how to use advantages to put your players in positions to be successful, then what are we even discussing about winning.
It's one thing to expect your best players to elevate their play, but it's equally important to put them in advantageous positions as well.

He's been steady Sammy as of late with now a 20-6-7 record with 2 shutouts. He's the game 1 starter. Against Buffalo that played better than us showed it as he robbed em left and right.
Put this into perspective before waivers 5-2-6 3.44 GAA, 0.863 SV and since coming back 15-4-1 2.43GAA and a 0.914SV
And if we compare the 2 last 7 starts
Woll
3-4
3.03 GAA and a 0.893 SV
Samsonov
5-1-1
2.27 GAA and a 0.928 SV
If Keefe starts Woll over Sammy he's nuts especially if they face Boston lul.</div></div>
As of right now, Sammy should be the starter for game 1....but as we've seen, nothing is guaranteed. Sammy was inconsistent in Washington and that's what he's been here in Toronto.
He's playing well now and it's good to see him having this success however in 3 weeks time, he could cool down and that's the nightmare the organization and fans dread.

But the copycating has happened but not from Keefe more so Brad.
VGK won the cup with a football team on the backend. Big guys with size and skill. Brad went
Edmundson 6'5 221 pounds
Benoit 6'3 203 pounds
Brodie 6'2 187 pounds (7th maybe? or Benoit idk)
Lybushkin 6'2 200 pounds
Rielly 6'1 225 pounds
McCabe 6'1 204 pounds
Liligren 6'1 192 pounds
Gio 6'0 205 pounds (8th Dman)
Im hesitant to fire the PK coach. Dean Chynoweth had this PK running at above 80% for the majority of his time here. Kerfoot and Holl left and it seems the PK just never could stabilize and really took a snag in March. This just feels odd this year in that department.
Now Marner being out is a factor but not perfectly replacing Kerfoot has also come into play as while Nylander and Matthews have taken a bigger role, Nylander should not be the backup PKer. He should be for select situations. Dewar coming is a start but this offseason were gonna need to focus more on 2-way guys
In the end Keefe usually will keep the guys the guys that are playing well together even if other guys return. Got a feeling Marner when he's back will be with JT.
Bertuzzi-Matthews-Domi will probs stay together for playoffs and either we see
Nylander-JT-Marner or Knies-JT-Marner for the 2nd line</div></div>
LoL..I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on how 2 on 1's have been defended.
As for Marner being on a different line now, this late in the season? Well done, /golf clap. Had the whole season to build chemistry with guys on different lines but let's try it now..

I don't know if you're aware of past discussions about having Matthews, Marner and Nylander all on different lines but at least some of us feel that the team could take advantage of opponents with various matchups.
This is just another thing that some of us feel Keefe hasn't figured out during his Leafs tenure.
I don't know how much you guys watch HNIC pre-game stuff but recently (Carolina game) Bieska compared team systems between Toronto and Carolina. The differences seem to be night and day. At the end of the segment Bieska mentioned the NHL being a copycat league. Now there's a thing I'd copycat but that hasn't occurred to Keefe in his tenure.
Last thing about coaching/D-core: Leafs have to be one of the worst D-core at defending a 2 on 1. I don't once remember in the 6 years of this core where they managed to not allow a pass during a 2 on 1.
Before people jump on me about these things, I know there's assistants in charge of PK/PP, offense/defense but the buck stops with the head coach, period, case closed.
This is why we see assistants let go and new ones brought in but the head coach answers for things that don't work.

Well put.
Adding the no adjustments to your list is just another reason why he isn't the coach that will inspire this team to do the things needed to win, especially in the playoffs.
Edit: I'll even add consistency in effort to the list. They have streches where it looks like they can beat anyone and then have streches where they can't beat anyone.

Of course you weigh how much more you like different guys in different spots and if you’re comfortable moving back and going with option 2 later…but there’s a more precise strategy about who you want to select where vs simply just getting more picks and figuring out the rest later</div></div>
Since this draft isn't as deep, is trading one or more picks from this draft to acquire 2025 picks realistic?
Curious on where people stand on this draft vs 2025.
