I don't think there is anything wrong with the contract in a vacuum. The question is really one of roster construction, and if having so much of the cap tied up in four forwards is wise.

There was a Wild fan sitting near my wife and I and I hear “they’re so soft, look how easily they fall down.”
The Wild owned that game from start to finish.

I didn't get to watch the game but could it be the forwards aren't helping on D which causes the defensemen, that are limited in ability, to try and do too much instead of playing more positionally?

Was at the game tonight…. Brutal from top to bottom. Sprong was the only forward moving the whole game. Seider and Walman were terrible, everyone looked like they were skating in sand.

Getting a goalie
Doesn’t make sense for a team with a better prospect pool for defense than Detroit (one of very few) to trade Gibson for an excess positional strength. Conversely, Wallinder has a chance to be very impactful for Detroit, as could the potential 1st rounder.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelisgoat</b></div><div>Kostin and Maata are roster players (see tonight’s game) and are not negative assets. I would be willing to deal Maata for very little so Edvinsson can get in, but Kostin is going nowhere. Please realize the way Klim was brought in just months ago.
Campbell is a boat anchor contract, not sure where you get the idea it only costs the wings 1.5M? Unless you’re mathing some subtraction there with this trade, but don’t bother. No matter how you swing this, Campbell is a massive cap load unless 50% retained, for any team.
Broberg has Filip Zadina level value in my opinion, I wouldn’t even take a flyer on him for free. We have about 5 better lhd prospects. I could do Campbell and 2 firsts for Maata and Reimer, but echoing some above comments, highly doubt Yzerman considers any such trade.</div></div>
I actually did the math backwards in my head! $3.85M is the cap hit when he’s in the minors. Seems like Wings fans like all of Chiarot Maatta and Holl which is a little surprising… better to have all of them then the first and Broberg? I love the Wings’ direction but if I were the GM I would be ok with a little more asset aggregation. Again, I really like Broberg, so it’s extremely rose coloured glasses

I actually haven't been able to watch much, so basically going off of last year. I did get to watch some of tonight's game though. Work has kept me from being able to watch as much Red Wings games as I would like.
That's actually wicked then if he is playing better. It was probably more of a team thing than just a him thing last year as well.
I'll take back my statement if what you are saying is true.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DopeGM</b></div><div>Terrible asset management for Detroit? In what way is it terrible. It’s terrible if carrying Campbell’s contract hurts them in the minors which I’m not convinced it does.
A $1.5M ish cap hit for three years for Broberg and a first is smart business as Detroit winds up the rebuild. Still, it’s a huge favour to Holland. Campbell’s contract is truly horrendous and worth about three firsts to take on. I’d rather have Broberg and shoot back Kostin but I really like Broberg.</div></div>
It’s terrible for the following:
1) waste of retention slot
2) Soup’s contract is not worth its weight in the problems that follow.
3) other teams will have interest in Reimer without any strings attached
4) Broberg would be a redundancy without being an improvement overall.
Kostin was acquired at the cost of SY doing Holland a favor (buying out Yamo). He has been a nice addition, and not a negative asset.
Maata was re-signed, and has been exactly as advertised in a steady, defensive role. He is also not a negative asset.
Broberg (lateral move at best)
Campbell (negative asset)
Presumably late first (pick 20-28?)
For
Reimer (improvement for EDM
Retainment (- for Detroit + for EDM)
Maata (improvement for EDM)
Kostin (EDM fan favorite)

I think Kane will be more expensive. If he is resigned, that would mean his hip is OK, and he will ask for more money. My guess is a 2 year deal at 5M, Maybe a cheaper one year deal that is bonus heavy. If he resigns, I am not resigning Perron, unless very cheap.
I don't want to overpay for Lindholm. We are not bad at center. Compher is fine at 2C, and Copp/Veleno likewise at 3C. Could need a shutdown C for the fourth line though. Maybe Kasper kan fill that role in his rookie season?

I don't know what some Detroit fans on here are thinking but this we are in the playoffs and we have to buy no matter the price is just stupid. At least half the time they are trading prospects that are 5 - 10 years younger and have the same amount potential if not more than the player that are being trading for. They still need to make the playoffs and even if they make the playoffs do they make it out of the first round.

Seriously, a whole roster spot taken up? The salary is prorated. 20 games past nearly so that’s almost a quarter of it off the books. That’s like 700k. So 2 mill for a potential top 6. And ye, he wasn’t great in New York, buddy had to have hip surgery. If he wasn’t injured all year and played normal Kane life, he would be cashing in 7-8 mill. The guy wasn’t rushed back and plays coming off a lot of rehab.the guys 35 and had 57 points in 73 games, 21 of which were goals all while playing mostly injured. I think it’s safe to say he’s well worth 2 mill. Who you keeping for a roster spot over Kane ? Veleno and Kostin ? I’ll take Kane all day. Smh. I don’t think you know much about hockey. What’s 2 mill grabbing you for your roster ? A deadline rental ? Or some scrub ?

Surprising to see a lot of negative comments or risk comments. They add Kane for relatively cheap without giving up anything vs a trade. If anything, it just shows Detroit is still a big landing spot for players. There is a gap on the RW between Raymond, Perron and Sprong so the depth is great in the forward group. It's not like he has to play top line either and having Perron and Sprong in the bottom is 6 shows great depth.

Guy puts up 57 points in 73 games on a historically ****ty team for 54 of those games on a bad hip. Gets hip fixed and now people are calling him garbage. I don't get it. His mind and his hands are the same and if his hip is pain free, then there is only upside here. Imagine having a player put up a 64 point pace per 82 games and calling him trash. lol. Love this site. Keep the hits coming people.

Free player, unused cap space, doesnt take up a whole lot, high upside, if he doesnt work out, you have wasted a few bucks, I dont see how people could vote no, because even though his cap hit is high the impact that the cap has on the team is not significant enough to cause problems.

I'm surprised how many 'no' votes there are. I know he's had injuries, but it's a 1 year deal, and Detroit still has quite a bit of cap space to potentially add another big name rental at the deadline. And even though he didn't have a very good year by his standards last year, he was coming off of 4 consecutive seasons where he had over a point per game, and he was still on pace for 60+ points last year. If he's healthy he's easily a top-6 forward, probably a top-line forward.
And hey, if it doesn't work out, it's only 1 year.
