Lol. Guentzal ends up getting a middle 6 winger, a 2nd round pick, and 3 mid tier prospects.

Tanev per NHL Net
Sounds like CGY is holding out hope for a 1st. I think they hold off on this proposal until they either get a 1st or realize a 2nd + serviceable youngish player is as good as it'll get.

In addition to the fact that nobody is taking Suter, he has a NMC. He's not going anywhere.

Probably a fair trade, but Dallas is far more likely to trade a 1st than Bourque. Bourque, along with Stankoven and probably Bichshel, are effectively untouchables. I don't think Nill would move any of them for a rental.

Jake to Dallas
This is an insane payment for Guenztel. 1st + 3rd + top prospect + good T9 winger for a rental forward. Teams don't even really pay 1st + top prospect for rentals, let alone the extra. And Dallas isn't hurting for forwards, they're hurting for defense.
A team with strong forward depth isn't making that overpayment for a rental winger, even a very good one. If anything, simply because they don't need him.

Lol. There is no situation in which Dallas is trading Harley for any combination of players on the Flames. He's 22 and has 14 goals/35 points while playing responsible defense. He's putting up Weegar numbers (15g/33pt) despite being 8 years younger.

Ball In
Eh... I don't think Dallas would do this, based on a couple of assumptions.
1. Teams rarely trade a 1st AND one of their top prospects for a rental. It's typically one or the other, but not both. So I really don't see a 1st and Bourque going for Guentzel. Particularly as Dallas's weakness is on defense, not top 6 scoring. Mix in the Faksa salary dump, and this has Dallas trading 2x 1st rounds picks, 1x 3rd round pick, and a top prospect to reinforce Dallas's area of strength (forwards) with a rental.
2. The Tanev deal is probably right-ish. Word is Calgary is trying to get a 1st and no one has bit yet. So I'm thinking 1st + 3rd + 4th + depth D is a bit over what we'll see, but probably not by much. I'd expect to see 1st + mid prospect or 2nd + strong prospect/young player, depending on how the market ends up shaking out.

I mean that seems fair. Based on their history, Dallas 5th round picks are gold.

This is huge for both
Dallas declines. Stankoven is their top prospect, and they're counting on him being a top, cheap contributor in the future as guys like Pavelski, Duchene, Seguin, and Benn move on. You'd have to blow them away on an offer to get him. I could see Dallas trading a 1st and a decent prospect, but a 1st and a 3rd and their top prospect? Not going to happen.
Matheson would be a great add, but Nill doesn't spend big at the TDL. Since he took over in 2013, he's pretty much only added depth at the TDL. His big trades have been in the offseason.
I'm also confused as to why Ylonen is included in this trade.

Big Trade Thoughts
Even if Benn were to waive his NTC (he wouldn't), Dallas isn't trading Harley, Benn and a 1st for Hanafin.
-Harley was Dallas's 2nd best dman in the playoffs, and is expected to solidify his spot in the Top 4 and run the 2nd PP this season. He's Dallas's top D prospect who's expected to be s a full-time Top 4 guy at and QB the 2PP. Dallas is already weak on D, they're not moving out their second best guy and rising star. Hanafin's better right now, but from a long-term view, this would be a terrible move even if it was a 1-for-1.
Adding in Benn (who had more points than anyone on Calgary last season) AND a 1st? This is a terribad trade.
All the swapping 3rds and AHL-caliber player additions are fluff.

Upgrading the Defense
I like most of this, a lot. Only quibble is I'm not thinking you land Clifton for $1.5M. But overall a good looking plan that's more realistic than most of the stuff I see tossed out. At least imo.

Lines with Jrob signed
I like this roster, and I like the comments.
Johnston stays until Dellandrea gets healthy (probably after 1 or 2 games) and bumps him back to the CHL. There is an outside chance Johnston does well enough to force the Stars to keep him, but he'll have to be REALLY good for the Stars to be willing to give up a year of his ELC. I hope it happens, but I doubt it will.
I also like Mooterus's comment about the Marchment-Hintz-Guri line. Assuming Guri can keep mentally "in it" consistently enough to make that line a constant threat, that's a good top 6. I'd rather have a good top 6 than an elite 1st line and nothing else. But I assume that's going to shift and develop over the duration of the season.

Stars decline. For better or worse, Dallas is in win-now mode. They're not trading one of their top forwards for mid-tier prospect in a win-now season. They already have enough problems scoring as is.

The only problem with this lineup is that Bones would play the Glendening/Faksa/Comeau line 16 to 17 minutes a night.
I do really like having 3 legit scoring threat lines.
