replace savard, evans, and lafferty with Aman, Wolanin, and Joshua (3.5 million aav) and you save 2 million in cap. plus you dont lose any picks. would be a considerably better offseason to simply keep existing guys instead of overpaying for savard and evans

brutal trade for vancouver but i guess fine otherwise. would be extremely lame to not re-sign joshua, imo

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>That is absolutely a fair POV but any extension would be made after a trade anyways, when it is signed is less relevant. Gauging what he is looking for in his next deal could either lead to a reality check for Marner or narrow down trade options</div></div>
if im a GM of a contedning team and i acuire marner, and he isnt a 90 point two way winger for me, i would let him walk in FA. imo he is very worth the risk to pay big assets for as a rental but i wouldnt commit long term until i can see that he can have success in whatever system my team employs.
worst case scenerio is you overpay for a 2nd line winger for a year and then get $11 million in cap space in the 2025 off season

Shanahan gets fired (obviously, new CEO at MLSE)
Keefe gets fired
Tre essentially gains full control of the roster this offseason

> Tre starts by gauging what Marner will want on his next contract if they were to extend him, Marner says something like 12M x 4 years.
> Tre says I can't do that, the highest I'm willing to go is ~9.75M, proceeding to make his case on why.

> Marner lists 3-5 teams.
> After July 1st when names like Guentzel, Reinhart, etc are signed/extended, plus Marner's bonus is paid, Tre starts negotiating with those 3-5 teams
> When he finds a deal he likes he gives that team permission to negotiate with Marner on an extension
> A trade is made and all parties are happy</div></div>
maybe im in the minority but if im trading for marner i dont want it to come with an extension in place. id rather see how he fits on my roster first before discussing contract. the huberdeau contract should be a warning for this

hoglander doesnt get pushed around that much. but hes not even the most physical player on the line anyways
well, amongst 1st line fowards last season (i.e, played at least 18 mins a game, which is 97 total) pettersson ranked 11th in the league in hits.
marner adds a ton of skill to that line. right now they have mikheyev playing there and its not like he is overly physical

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>How about <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/players/jason-spezza">this</a> as potential comp?
2014 trade for Spezza, who had one-year at $7m (similar % of cap to Marner when signed). He unexpectedly asked for trade out of Ottawa, then blocked some of the locations they tried trading him too. The return ended up being three big forwards from Dallas: Alex Chiasson, 6'4" 200 lbs coming off 35-pt rookie year; Nick Paul, 6'3" 220 lbs, 19 yrs old coming off strong playoff run in OHL; Alex Guptill, 6'3" 200 lbs former NCAA star. None were overwhelming

I think it would have to involve at least one roster player to make cap work and considering torontos window

Wrong. Incredibly fair value trade that fits Ottawa’s biggest needs.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JokiStan</b></div><div>Willingly going from Demko to two of the worst mainstream goalie options the NHL has to offer is certainly a choice</div></div>
Foresberg has an excellent track record the three years prior to this one. Worse than Demko? Yes for sure.
But still easily a good enough goalie for this team to compete for first in the pacific again. It’s not like LA or Edmonton or VGK or Colorado have elite goaltending but all of them are basically 100 point teams.
Vans biggest strength is defense. They need to add more offense to the team and this is the best way to do it
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>YesThisIsFlo</b></div><div>Listen, two things can be true:
- The trade can have fair value
- The trade makes absolutely no sense from an organizational or roster standpoint
Hell no, because it makes the team significantly worse on aggregate, even if the value might be there.</div></div>
This would be the best top 9 forward group the team has possibly ever rolled out, even going back to the Sedin era teams
