Maybe a 2nd? LOL
They better at least get a 2nd and a prospect. Greene got that and he is a 37 year rental.

Carolina Fans -- My Thoughts in Description
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>MArtinez isn't exactly a fit. His underlying numbers aren't great, and his one major issue is his legs are starting to go. With skaters like Foegele, Necas, Aho, Teravaineen, Svechnikov, Dzingel who just skate around guys, Martinez isn't gonna be able to keep up. Personally, I'd rather target someone like DeMelo, and extend him, although I think the value is fair</div></div>
I think "underlying numbers" have to be taken with a grain of salt when looking at anyone on the LA roster. Pretty much everyone has done better away from the team, key examples being Pearson and Kovalchuk. Granted, those aren't defenseman, but Muzzin has done pretty well for Toronto, being their one stable defender. I disagree with saying his legs are starting to go. As someone who has watched nearly every Kings game for the past 10 years, his legs are close to the same as they've always been. He's never been a burner, but he's smart with the puck in his own zone, makes a good first outlet pass, and can keep up with the play. He would also be a great PK'er, and could sub in on PP2 when needed. It certainly would be an adjustment for him moving to a faster team, but I think he could do it.
I hope you wouldn't have to give up a 1st for DeMelo!!
Thanks for the feedback.

I think that with his contract, plus the rumor that he's threatened to retire if he's traded, makes Carts unmovable. But you're absolutely right about the need for veteran leadership.

Malkin played as the second line center on one of the highest scoring teams of the past decade.
Kopitar played as the 1st line center on the most defensive team of the decade (of which, he's a huge reason why the Kings won 2 Jennings trophies), is still just under a point per game, plays a completely different, much more responsible/complete style than Malkin, and won 2 Selke's in an era that has Patrice Bergeron and "east coast bias". He's led the Kings in scoring for 10 out of the past 11 seasons. Don't discount Kopitar.
They're both first ballot Hall of Famers. No edge to either one because you can't compare the two.

This is comparing apples to oranges, as like OP said, they're different players.
Kopi's defensive game >>>>>> Malkin's defensive game.

When building a team, if you already have a Sidney Crosby, you pick Malkin over Kopitar. If you have a Connor McDavid/Auston Matthews, you might choose Kopitar over Malkin to round out your team.
No real choosing a clear-cut "better player" here. Just enjoy two great players for what they separately bring to the game. Both will make the Hall easily.</div></div>
Could not have said it better myself, there is a reason LA was one for the 4 teams to win the cup over an 8-9 era.

Why? The Kings already have way too many bottom six forwards and 3rd pairing defensemen. Amadio was one of the better players on the Kings in the preseason and you want to give his spot away to a guy that couldn't crack the Ducks roster?

Trading for him would be like trading for Cam Ward years ago, a mistake! The game is treading away from small goalies and especially ones that make lots of coin for 4 more years!</div></div>
Dude... I’m a hawks fan. I despise the Kings. They took my boys out in 2014 in such a tragic way. I’ll never forget that. I am being objective. I would want nothing more than the Kings to ever be a playoff team again

Worst contract is Lucic and then I'd say it's Abdelkader. There's no way it's Quick, people make way too much of these stupid lists that come out.. Lol
I'm pretty sure Kovalchuk would waive to go somewhere that is at least competitive and there'd maybe be some interest in him if there's some retention involved.

That’s my thinking also. Understand some want to keep the picks, however, even a streaky scorer can accelerate the rebuild/retool a little quicker. With Martinez and Carter coming off books in 2-3 seasons can season the prospects already in the line. Was just fun to insert Laine into the lineup.

I'd be open to most of these trades.
Absolutely not on the Montreal trade. Brown has been the Kings best winger for the last two seasons. The Kings should not pay to get rid of him.
If the Kings are able to pry New Jersey's 1st round pick away, they should keep it and buy out Schneider.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. He's a solid 2nd pairing defenseman on a team-friendly contract. He also has two Stanley Cups and two game-seven OT series clinching goals in his career, one of which won the Kings their 2nd Stanley Cup. Nothing about him is "replacement level". He is also one of the best shot blockers and penalty killers in the NHL.
If traded this season, he will return a 2nd round pick and a b-level prospect. If next season, probably only a 2nd round pick.

They don't really have that many bad contracts. They're not in cap trouble either. As it stands now, the Kings have over $8M in cap space for next season, even after signing all their RFAs to extensions. They're not looking to be competitive for the next season or two, so there's no reason to go UFA shopping.
My definition of a "bad" contract is one that a team wouldn't be able to move if they wanted to unless they took back a cap dump or retained a significant amount of salary. The only ones that fit that category are Carter, Kovalchuk, and Phaneuf. Brown just recently came off a career season and is one of the only players that actually showed up during this year's dumpster fire. The Kings won't trade him. They certainly won't take on cap dumps to get rid of him. Quick had an off year, but could easily rebound next season. There would still be teams willing to trade for him if the Kings tried to move him (they probably wouldn't give up very much for him, but the Kings wouldn't have to retain a significant portion of his contract or take on cap dumps to move him).
Kovalchuk and Phaneuf will both be off the books by 2021, right around the time when the Kings are looking to become competitive again and will be shopping for UFAs. Granted, Carter's contract looks pretty bad right now.
The rest of the Kings contracts are all very reasonable.

Rebuild underway
You don't rebuild by trading away several of your best prospects and every 1st & 2nd round draft pick for the foreseeable future.
For a Doughty + Vilardi for Marner + Zaitsev swap, Toronto would be the team adding, not LA.
