Okay, let's put it this way, what is the real sticking point for St. Louis here? It's not their timeline because they aren't contending anytime soon? Because their defense might suck next year? What's the issue with that, because realistically you could just retool?

Don't think trading Marner at 26 years old for a bucket of pucks is the right way to go, but maybe they do. Time will tell this is just a opinion.</div></div>
You may be right but I also think that the "bags of pucks" he could net would be more valuable than just letting him walk next offseason. Because I think this team is done with him, especially ownership at MLSE and I don't think he'll get an extension unless its for less than his current deal.

Trading Marner 7
Wow this is rough, this is a guy in talks for a buyout before his deal even kicks in. On his current contract he's legitimately a negative asset. Not to mention he clearly has problems with his attitude and has tried to force his way out of every organization he has ever been with.

Powerplay solves are a lot easier with competent coaching staff, no need to shell out your most promising young offensive player (which has notoriously struggled in the playoffs) for a PP quarterback

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canuck4life</b></div><div>Borgen had a very good season. He had 25 points, more than both Larsson and Oleksiak. He would have been 1 point behind Brodie for 3rd place on your team in D scoring. I have watched him tons on the Westcoast. If I had my choice out of Larsson, Oleksiak or Borgen, I would be going with Borgen, way more upside.</div></div>
Don't know how much more upside you expect from a 27 y/o that is very sub-par defensively and has limited usability in your top 4. If the leafs wanted to go for a defenseman like that I would rather just keep Liljegren.
Not to mention you listed Liljegren as worth a 3rd and a 4th which given his value should theoretically be higher than Borgen's, would make the Marner deal all the more bad for the Leafs

Simply put, not happening. Drop the idea already Leafs fans</div></div>
Defense may have a bunch of holes but value for value its a complete win for the Blues. And yes, Marner is good but clearly doesn't fit the needs of this Leafs squad and someone needs to go. To say a 90-100 point winger in Selke conversations is not good is laughable.

Doesn't matter really, if you're getting an offer that is that valuable for your team you make adjustments. Not saying it fits the timeline or the teams needs, its simply a deal where the value is too skewed to not take it

Leaf trade ideas From an outsider Nucks Fan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Canuck4life</b></div><div>I don't know man. You get a forward who was an all star this year, a young rugged rhd on a good contract, plus a 1st and 3rd. On top of that, you gain a bit of cap space, pretty good return imo. Marner is expiring after this year as well, so that probably lowers his value.</div></div>
Let's start with Marner, yes he will be expiring but any deal he's included in will be essentially his choice and will likely come with an extension since he has a full NMC which of course would lower his value slightly. Despite this, he's still a 90-100 point winger that is consistently in Selke conversations.
The two most comparable trade situations would be Eichel to Vegas and Tkatchuk to Florida.
Eichel to Vegas: Tuch + Krebs + 1st + Second
Tkatchuk to Florida: Weegar + Huberdeau
The trade you proposed is significantly lesser than both of those deals with the issue being Borgen who is pretty much a filler as hes a 27 y/o bottom pairing defenseman on a non-playoff team.
I think Seattle if Marner was willing to waive would be a great destination but I think any deal likely starts with one of Dunn, Larsson, or Oleksiak with one of Bjorstrand or McCann.

People are saying this is close to fair value which it might be, however its even close to what the Leafs should want/need out of this deal. Ehlers has the same question marks as Marner with less skill and Pionk isn't meaningfully solving any of their defensive issues.

Leafs retool
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Among other things, we expect Byfield to improve on his breakout year and DuBois improve on his cesspool year next season. Then there is the maturation of LaFerriere, Turcotte and Spence . . . much of next season depends upon who will be in goal. The Kings were comfortably clear of Calgary and Seattle this year so the question will be whether two of St. Louis, Minnesota and dark-horse Utahzona will finish ahead of them.</div></div>
I would also expect an improvement from Byfield and would expect some level of improvement from LaFerriere, Turcotte and Spence, however, not to a meaningful enough level where it completely changes the construct of the team. As for Dubois, sure he might be better, but to expect anything more than serviceable would be wishful thinking given his history.
Goaltending is a serious issue as you noted which again will be more wishful thinking than anything barring a trade or signing. Plus I think Seattle is going to make some changes this offseason and I wouldn't be surprised if they shoot back up to contend for a wild-card at minimum with the likes of St. Louis or Minnesota.
Regardless, I fear as though they are going to be stuck with being a maybe solid regular season team that just won't be able to compete with the contenders that are in the top of the west like the Avs, Knights, Stars or Oilers.

I don't disagree that the trade makes no sense for the Kings but if they think their window is opening theres a big issue lol. They have some serious question marks and unless something drastically changes, they will be fighting just to make the playoffs next year.

I actually think this is close to value you could fetch for Marner if not a bit more.
Using the Eichel trade as a comparable: Tuch + Krebs + 1st + 2nd, I think the value in this would be closer to McCann + Larsson + 2nd for Marner + (no picks)
Using the Tkatchuk trade as a comparable: Weegar + Huberdeau, this should work out as Larsson + McCann straight up
However, regardless of all of this, I'd be surprised if Marner waived for Seattle and if he did, I'm not too clued into the current state of Seattle but this seems to fit their timeline if they worked out an extension with Marner.

Next year without Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Campabee</b></div><div>As an outsider, the Leafs best games of the series were 5, 6 and 7. Coincidently Mathews missed games 5 and 6 and had limited ice time in game 7. I am not saying Mathews personally is the problem, just the mentality of the team changes when he isn’t on the ice, they play a more blue collar, everyone buys in to defense type of game when they know they don’t have anyone to take over the game himself. They need to figure out how to play that way even with Mathews in the lineup, that is what will get them a deeper run.</div></div>
Yea I wouldn't look that far into this. The rumours/estimates were that Matthews got hurt/had his injury flare up in game 3. Prior to that he had his best playoff performance of his career and carried the team to a win. Yes, the team played their best hockey when he was out, but I think that was probably more indicative of the fact they had their backs against the wall more than not having Matthews. Marner on the other hand is completely different story as he struggled in every single game of this series.

If you want to make the argument that you can find a more reliable defenceman for the playoffs than Liljegren, that's fine, but trading Liljegren and a first for a player that has been objectively worse in every way this season makes no rational sense.
Now don't get me wrong, trading Liljegren should be on the table, but it has to be for the right piece and Dumba is from from it.
Or how about the chance that Dumba can pair with Rielly in the playoffs?</div></div>
