<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CN10</b></div><div>I think Brodie as a 2/3D at $4.6M is way more valuable than Stone at $3.5M as a 5/6D even if he is more physical. Brodie + Giordano ends up with Giordano in Norris contention each of the two full seasons they've played together.
I agree that they need to find an upgrade for the top 6 to pair with Tkachuk. I think we are stuck with Backlund in the #2C spot however, unless Dube takes a massive leap forward and plays like a poor man's Brayden Point. If something like that happened then I expect Tkachuk + Dube + playoff Bennett to be a good second line. I explored the idea of moving Frolik + Kylington + pick(s) to acquire an offensive top 6 winger capable of 50 points or more (Zucker, Hoffman, Granlund if he still doesn't fit in in Nashville, perhaps even Toffoli) but expect it would happen closer to the deadline. 3M is a great line in the regular season over a large sample size, but like you said and as we seen in the playoffs it makes it easy to shut down the Flames offense in the playoffs as pretty much everything has to run through Gaudreau's line. I believe the upgrade to the top 6 happens with a deadline deal this year.</div></div>
My thoughts are to take our top 4 players... and split them between 2 lines... although this will weaken the top line it will also open up the top lines ice time as we will then have 2 lines for the other teams to stop... make that 3 with 2 man duos that should or will pair well! Try Chucky with Mony on top pair (large first lines make teams much harder to play - copying the ducks and sharks here) then we get Johnny (protected on the second line - like others his size in the past) with Lindholm and that leaves Backs and Frolik as your 3rd line pair (arguably 1 of the best duos on the 3rd line in the league!)... Now we need a support player on each line... left are Bennett - Lucic - Dube - Mags - Janko and Ryan... So my lines...
Chucky - Mony - Bennett
Lucic - Lindholm - Johnny
Dube - Backs - Frolik
Mags - Janko - Ryan

Can The Flames Go Further in The Playoffs
Ummm... What's the definition of expecting better results when changing little to nothing? You did nothing to address our weakness on the 1st and 2nd lines? Plus your almost 2 mil over the cap?

I see where you are going here and agree its probably what will happen. Personally, I would rather see us move Brodie and keep Stone as he is much harder to play against (when healthy).
The big mistake I see and have been saying for a while is keeping the 3 m line together...
- Tkachuk is 100% a top 6 player (wouldn't mind seeing him on the top line while johnny gets sheltered on the 2nd).
- BUT when Backs is on the 2nd with PP time his numbers drop significantly! He is probably one of the leagues best 2-way 3rd line centres and an incredibly effective PK specialist but when moved up he loses a step and ends up as a mediocre 2nd line centre.
- Then Frolik... When paired with Backs on the 3rd line and given PK time he excels! But on the 2nd line, he becomes a below-average winger...
Move Backs and Frolik back where they belong and build a real second line starting with Tkachuk or maybe even Johnny!
The key here is to be playoff-ready! To get into the second round and beyond! We will not make it with the 3 m line as our 2nd line...

Just checked TO cap hit for next year and they should have about 17 mil available... this said they need to sign 4 forwards, 3 d-men and a goalie... (based on Horton being IR next year)

The trade with PHI makes no sense? Frolik is not the problem in Calgary's top 6/9... Neal is the problem (in fact Frolik's numbers are better than Simmonds so far this year!). and Calgary throws in Dube, a top prospect?
Then we have the OTT trade... Is OTT GM smoking crack? Anderson (with 1 year left) for Smith (cap dump) a 4th and a ECHL prospect.... I think they will pass...

Can't see why PHI would agree to the cap dump? And that CAR trade is a joke right?

Ive Often Wondered About This
I like where you are going with this... Bennett was a big part of the last win! When played with good players his game elevates! Add in his aggressive fore-check and you have a player that can stand up and protect Johnny while at the same time adding to the lines skill set!

Calgary Flames Lines 2018
Everyone keeps putting Backs on line 2... As a line 2 center Backs is ok but looses some of his effectiveness on the PK when played on the PP - just to much ice time...
Lets remember where Backs earned his stripes and the player he is! Probably one of the best 3rd line centers in the game today - when played against the other teams 1st line (checking line) he and Frolik STAND OUT! They excel both in a checking role and in capitalizing on opponents mistakes! As one of the best PK teams in the league! Couple years ago they where a PLUS on the PK!!!!
If this team is ever going to be great it needs to play players WHERE THEY BELONG AND WHERE THEY STAND OUT!!!! Like TJ on the RD Backs and Frolik are 3rd line and PK (no pp as it drains them!)

Hamilton was tough? Must have missed that game... LOL... And Buying out Stone??? Why so your team isn't under the cap? Stone is easily a 2nd pair d-man on most other teams... In-fact I will go 1 further... IMO Stone is better than Hamonic! Well he was last year...

Sorry, No way you get Kulak for 650k, NHL Min this year is 700k and he will get more... not much more but more...
Janko will also get a higher payout - even for a 2 year bridge deal...
Lastly you have undervalued Frolik and Stone... Neither are worth a 1st but at-least a 2nd each plus... Both are full time NHLr's

Craig Anderson?
As long as they both (goalies) don't get injured at the same time this could work... Well only if we could still buy out Brouwer and as the buy out period is over...
"The buyout period begins the later of June 15 or 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final ends. It concludes on June 30 at 5 pm EST"
This being said there is a small chance of the club getting a "Buyouts Outside of the Regular Period"... This requires
"Clubs whom have 1 or more arbitration filings may be permitted to perform a buyout outside of the regular window. This gives teams another opportunity to become cap compliant following an arbitration case"

Vanderm... Just becuase it works doesn't mean it can't be improved on...
Chucky is also a great set up - play maker and needs to be played with a true goal scorer to take advantage of this skill....
As for the best combinations... 1 of Calgarys top pairs is Backs and Frolik (not Tkuchuk?), they are amazing as a team on the PK and as the core of the 3rd line!
Play these 2 where they belong and let Chucky ascend as he should - he is just at a higher level than Backs and Frolik - need to let him shine!

I agree Hanifin will or might get more in the future but not now... I would go a bridge deal and less money!
I also would NOT trade Stone as we need the depth on D... Finally splitting up Backs and Frolik is not the right move... Leave them both on the 3rd where they shine!
Watch Janko explode with Chuckey and Neal to set him up!
