Which the second contracts should be a lot more than their first. So it’s just substituting them out

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FriendlyGhost</b></div><div>Trades like these keep your contention window short because you don't have young players on cheap contracts for depth once the core is getting paid.
Not to mention what you're getting back for selling good picks ain't worth it at all.</div></div>
Cheap contracts for depth shouldn’t be an issue. I see Veleno, Kane, Perron and Sprong taking cheaper deals. Yea, three of them are older but that gives time for kasper and danielson to develop then they’re up at the point when they can be afforded because these veterans will be gone. Also very easy to sign good depth deals for free agency, so if they were drafting, they should draft for more high end players

Fixing the D core
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>This defense is full of place holders. Seider and maybe Walman are the only dmen who aren't place holders. The only correct way to rebuild is through the draft and developing players through your system is the best way to ensure sustained success. Detroit currently has 2 players drafted by Yzerman and only 5 players total that were drafted by Detroit on their roster. With the way Detroit has played this season I think they have opened their playoff window. Now adding big names for futures will increase are chances to win now but they will shorten how long that window stays open. One of the main reasons Detroit's rebuild has taken so long is they tried to keep that window open for too long. So they had almost nothing left in their system and have had to replenish the system before they could start rebuilding their team. I’ve noticed a lot of users on this site either don't have the patients, are incapable of looking past the next 2 seasons or just don't understand how the whole process works. But at this point is another season or 2 that bad when it could add another 10 seasons of being competitive?</div></div>
I completely understand the need to develop more defensive prospects. However, I think they already have a strong pool in Edvinsson, ASP, Wallinder, Johannsen, and Viro. Edvinsson should be good to go next year, and possibly ASP, but the rest still look like they need more time. This trade keeps better placeholders and makes the team way more competitive. In my opinion, if they were structured defensively all year they could be right up there with Toronto

This team ain't winning a Cup this year.</div></div>
The team is not close to those cup contenders right now. However, they have the prospects to get there, they just need more time for them to develop. Trades like these won’t hurt them as they’re getting rid of two guys who don’t really have a future with the team, and still having the prospects

After the performance from the d i’m watching tonight, they are in desperate need. Savard has already been labeled a need for a 1st, and xekjai a 2nd or 3rd. Plus getting rid of petry makes it more difficult

Mercer however, is not in the table for ullmark</div></div>
With other teams interested in getting goalies, it wouldn’t be enough

Fits both requirements for each team. Boston needs forward help, gets rid of cap to acquire more, still has starting goalie
New Jersey already has a strong load of forwards, Will have to extend mercer within the next year or 2 that can cause cap issues, and need a starting goalie.

Well if they’re going to acquire defensive and offensive depth then they’re gonna have to trade some big names because they have absolutely no cap to fill their holes

The forward depth is more important in their situation. Both pairs are capable of playing 20+ minutes a night. The forwards do not compare well to the rest of the rosters

I agree I believe hanifin just can’t be traded to tampa due to the fact that they have not much to give. Only issue with other teams that he’s a good fit for is that they don’t have enough cap

With a top 4 in mcavoy, greclyk, carlo, and lindholm, they can look around for a lot more depth. I’m more concerned about Bostons forward depth for playoffs, especially considering the fact that they weren’t able to get out of the first round with Bergeron and Krejci last year. I think adding depth and having those top 4 d lock down, they become top contenders to win

Wennberg is a solid piece that can play two way and win faceoffs, but there are a lot better options to use with a first round pick other than him. Also taking into account that he will listen to a lot of offers this summer and it’s smart to get something before you can get nothing

I’d say get something for him while they can. A 1st and 4th are pretty good picks for a guy who is an RFA and would probably walk if he was a UFA. He’s not where he was last year in stats and i could see him getting an even lower amount next year

Det moving up
This is projected to have vancouver as the #2 pick and detroit to have around the #8-11 pick. This fills vancouvers needs as it’s a stacked draft and they will still get a high puck plus basically a late first round pick along with a 6th and a 7th. Vancouver needs to build more strong prospects rather than 1 possible star
Detroit gives up an early 2nd, 6th, and 7th with their high first round pick to acquire the 2nd overall pick who should be fantilli. Detroits got a great prospect pool so they need a star player so it’s not risky to give up 3 extra picks
