I like it. Very close. But the 1st and 3rd round picks return for Savard a couple years back is the floor for Gavi, likely higher given the market and his reported extension in place with the Oilers. And I totally see Puljujärvi in there. (Need to learn to spell his name quickly; I’ve long thought he’d end up a Jacket, even after Jarmo passed over him in the draft.) But the rumors of him being put on waivers sinks his value for Columbus, unless I’m missing something, as they could just pluck him off the wire. Still, he should stay in the deal, and helps balance the money.

For Columbus, I have had my eyes on Yamamoto as well. If that unevens the scales, the Jackets could offer back Eric Robinson, a bottom-six forward but speedy and trained on the PK, the type of role player the Oilers might need come playoffs. Korpisalo has also perpetually been linked to EDM as a G option.

Staying away from roster players though, if the Oilers want to avoid including picks beyond their 1st rounder, a prospect potluck of say Rafael Lavoie, Carter Savoie, and Olivier Rodrigue could do the trick. None of them have sniffed the League but could be shots in the dark for a thin CBJ ranks. Tyler Tullio and Markus Niemeläinen would be second choice prospects along with anyone from the reserve list; Xavier Bourgault would be a prime choice.

CBJ also has young but expendable players it could and would ship back across the border—again to even scales—that could help EDM improve around the margins or cut cost around the edges (Janmark, Shore, Holloway, Ryan, Desharnais, Broberg, even Ceci if that’s in consideration). Emil Bemström is a world-class scorer, but…he needs to be surrounded by talent or he morphs into a lost puppy. Liam Foudy has all the tools to succeed, included genetically inherited speed from his Olympic-medalist mother and CFL father. But since his playoff goal in the bubble victory over the Leafs, he has clearly been hexed. Knocking on the door, but it’s as if the goal is covered by plexiglass. Mathieu Olivier (somehow American…from Mississippi) won’t tally many point, but he’ll punch someone for you. Anyone. And I would not build my defense around Jake Christiansen, but for a team with Ryan Murray on its roster, there are worse options. Plays both sides, will make mistakes, but learns from them and has improved every single game I have seen him on the ice. All still with future RFA rights. All 23 or younger except Olivier. I’ll throw in Gavin Bayreuther, who does not fit the prior criteria, but impresses in his ability to go from repeated healthy scratch to replacement that doesn’t look out of place. Oh, and is signed at the absolute minimum. This group seems nuanced and splitting hairs, which is honestly worthless for a Bedard-hunting CBJ squad, but for a team looking to not just make the postseason but win Lord Stanley’s Cup, these nuances could prove the difference (just ask the inexplicably located TBL).

In case I haven’t already turned this simple, straightforward, completely reasonable trade into a doctoral thesis, Columbus has one more thing to offer, particularly if the Oilers are looking for another piece in addition to Gavrikov, even Karlsson as well. First, I’d imagine they’d be willing to push that 1st round pick out into the future (or at least I would). But that’s a footnote. More importantly, they have loads of effective cap space. Probably $8M alone in LTIR with Werenski injured, and they have about two full line shifts also on the shelf. Even more flexibly, they have Gus Nyquist ($5.5M cap hit) reportedly out for the season. Not clarified whether that is regular or until next; obviously if he can come back for the playoffs he would have more value, but either way he could be moved to a team for “dead” salary (buried cap hits, players somehow ineligible for LTIR, guys with albatross contracts that forgot how to play hockey and end up healthy scratches). Oilers do not seem to fit that bill too well (to my outsider eye) but maybe a third team does, and they can move junk for the ability to exceed the cap with LTIR. Ideally for EDM that would be SJ, but not sure that works, but it could for a different trade target. Or with a fourth team. Dang, TB does it every season. Alternatively, Jakub Voracek ($8.25M AAV thru next season) also offers the same opportunity. Done right, it’s a way for a team to step in and absorb some of the Karlsson cap hit for the near future without making a 4 1/2 year commitment. Or maybe CBJ’s offices go wild and crazy, move Voracek’s deal off the books (and maybe Gudbranson’s, and THEY decide to absorb 18% of Erik the Pirate’s cap hit. Of course in addition to your deal, or a slight modification thereof.

Seriously, you’re really on point, and by the time I submit this, your deal might have come through as is. Just wanted to add my thoughts. Hope a deal can get done for both sides’ sake.
