Counter-point: Malkin doesn't have a lot of years left, is always injured, never 100% for the playoffs, so sitting out a regular season would be smart as far as helping the Penguins win another Cup. Seriously though, Crosby could play into his 40s if he wanted to, I'm not sure Malkin will even re-sign after this contract is up.

The thing about Evgeni Malkin is, he's always legitimately injured. Hasn't been 100% in years.

If not Dadonov, then maybe the habs try and go for someone else (ie. Hoffman) on a one year deal. That would be perfect because they have a lot of cap space right now, but it doesn’t eat into their cap space past this year.</div></div>
It’s possible for the Pens, just need to move a few things around. I’m not sure Hoffman will be much cheaper, possibly more expensive. He’s not better but there always seems to be that one GM who drools over counting stats and opens his wallet.

We’ll see about the cap. These things have a tendency to over-correct. My other thinking in this is if he signs a 1-year deal he has the option in a year to sell his skills to a brand new team in Seattle with ample cap room.

If it were me, I’d easily match that and maybe go as high as $7M. Pens also have a decision to make with McCann. He’s so streaky. He’s either invisible or looks like a 30-goal scorer. I wouldn’t be surprised if they move on from him rather than payout $3M+.

Report Penguins unlikely to trade kessel
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mhockey91</b></div><div>You think Benn signs for that much? Maybe Faulk for hornqvist+ could work but certainly not Hamilton. Look what Carolina paid to acquire him.
You’re right on GMJR not trading Gubranson, he’ll probably stay. I just want him moved as 4 million isn’t great value for a bottom pairing guy. I wish Van retained.
Lehkonen reminds me of a younger hagalin. A speedy, defensive winger. I think he’d fit well on a line with kessel and Malkin.
I just traded Jugs for wennberg as a gamble. Wennberg showed promise of becoming a 1C earlier in his career then fizzled out. Pittsburgh has taken on reclamation projects before and they’ve been successful.</div></div>
I'm more going off of Evolve Wild's salary projections (twitter.com/evolvingwild)
I don't think Carolina would deal Hamilton but, for some reason, he always seems to be rumoured. They'd be dumb to move him. Faulk would be a nice upgrade on Schultz.
My thing about Bjugstad is he's one season off of putting up 41 5v5 Pts (that's tied with the likes of Kessel, Wheeler and Tarasenko). Now he was riding shotgun with Barkov & Dadonov and I don't see him getting that kind of deployment again but I could see him putting up 15-20 goals while being a guy who seemingly gets his stick on a high share of loose pucks on the forecheck. Wennberg for $800K more for 2 seasons more had 2 goals in 75 games last year... That makes me nervous while I'm actually encouraged by what I've seen in Bjugstad's small Pens sample. Plus I like saying "Bjug Nick Energy".

Report Penguins unlikely to trade kessel
I'd sign on to most of this. My only major criticism is I think Jordie Benn will sign for 3-4 years and for ~$3.5M.
I've liked the idea of trading Hornqvist to Carolina for a while. If not for his NTC, I think you could do Hornqvist+ for Faulk or maybe even Hamilton. And then shop Schultz. Always a market for RD.
I'd like to see Gudbranson gone but I've just accepted that GMJR feels like he needs someone to fight Tom Wilson on this team.
I'm open to keeping Maatta but adding Lehkonen and then signing Benn would be an overall upgrade. I feel like the Pens should be able to get more than Lehkonen.
I don't really see the purpose in trading Bjugstad for Wennberg. Bjugstad showed a lot of promise. I'm actually pretty excited to see his first full season as a Penguin.
Overall, some really interesting ideas. Good job! :)

It's a theoretical trade... But do you REALLY think any team would say "No" to all those players for a single 7th round pick? Even if you didn't want any of them, you could trade each of them (except maybe Jack Johnson) for a better asset than a 7th round pick.

15M of Cap Space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMTD</b></div><div>Those are really bad contracts. Hörnqvist has value but he is 33 and his contract runs for ever. Yeah, the fact that Hornqvist & Maatta both have value is why this deal works. Any team who gives up a 7th for these 4 can turn around and trade all of them for better pieces except for Jack Johnson who they'd need to either buyout or bury in the minors.

Gudbranson had a good looking 19 games but he's probably going to regress back to the player he's been for his previous ~450 games. And at $4M, for your 3rd RD, you could easily slot Chad Ruhwedel in there and get good results.

This roster theorizes Gardiner leaving Toronto (sick of fans), so the Leafs are feeling it's more important to spend $4M on a defenceman, with term, capable of playing middle pair minutes over a forward on a team stacked with forwards.

And as suggested by Riley above, why would the Leafs trade four assets (including Kapanen) just to obtain an unneeded Olli?</div></div>
Well now that Olli is out for a month with ANOTHER shoulder injury, that really shoots that that idea down.
The idea surrounding Olli Maatta is on the theory that they may need to shed Brown (although if they were to trade Kapanen, that's likely not a necessity anymore) and the idea that Gardiner may not return, Maatta for all his warts is a young defenceman, signed for a few more years at ~$4M, capable of playing in the middle pair.
This roster is a mixed bag of a few angles concerning dealings between the Leafs & Pens. Any of which *could* happen but on this roster *all* of them are happening even though one deal would negate the necessity of the others.

Total money is spread over 5 years, so your compensation is off. Kapanen would never sign for such long term at that money anyways and if he was dumb enough to do so, Toronto would happily match</div></div>
Yeah, I'm confused. I looked up on the Offer Sheet Calculator. It says AAV: $4,059,323 - $6,088,980, therefore compensation is a 1st & 3rd. So you're telling me that the max is 5 years? That's ok. Am I wrong about how the AAV works? On my roster it shows Kapanen with a cap hit of $4,059,323, so pretend it says 5 years, not 7.
Also, I agree Toronto *should* match that but for all the nonsense about teams supposedly offer sheeting Marner (they won't) I think after Marner, Johnsson and (hopefully) Gardiner, Kapanen could be the odd man out, possibly hold out unless he's dumb enough to sign for a low AAV.
Now GMJR is old school and I don't think he'd ever offer-sheet someone but he is creative enough where he could trade for Kapanen, starting with what would be compensation plus another cost-controlled prospect.

Okay, I put $5.5M. You're probably right that it's more like $6M but $500K isn't exactly off that much. Regardless, Toronto should NOT let him go. Hopefully the fans haven't chased him out of town.
For compensation; Whether I put 5 years or 7 years, it stays the same on CapFriendly's calculator. I could be misunderstanding how it works. What's the rate for 7 years with 1st & 3rd compensation.
