Full trade:
Pittsburgh trades Jake Guentzel (25% retained) and Ty Smith to Carolina in exchange for Michael Bunting, Ville Koivunen, Vasili Ponomarev, Cruz Lucius, Carolina’s 1st RD pick in 2024 (Conditional) and Carolina’s 5th RD pick in 2024 (Conditional).
Wow. Fleece job by Carolina.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yikes</b></div><div>I think Grier has done a fantastic job with the Duclair trade.
1) basically two thirds (equal to Tarasenko) - a good RD prospect for SJ which needs RD; and he’s 21 so he’ll have a lot of time to grow in SJ and the best pick they could get from Tampa realistically.
2) Duke has consistently voiced interest in SJ and while their being no deal on the table (obviously) he said in the last 24hrs he would return to SJS in the offseason is they would have him and if there was no deal out there for him.
3) ..I actually don’t think Duclair will stay in Tampa so it would come down to a new front runner to give Duclair a UFA deal.
4) And Grier has voiced recently not waning long term expensive UFA’s which means: IF DUKE was to resign in SJ
- Duke will return to a deal that’s probably 2-4 years
- At an AAV of probably 4.5-3.75m
So if the stars align for a Duclair in Teal - we could see Thompson, a 3rd for Duclair to return at a 4 years - 4mAAV deal.
Which would make an already great deal by Grier - even more incredible.</div></div>
I know things look bleak in SJ right now; but I really like all the young additions to their blueline pipeline. Really have turned that around in a short time.

They absolutely do. He's been great in the locker room, good in the community, and good on the ice. He had a couple of games where he was rightfully scratched for low effort, but I imagine it can be tough losing night in and night out.
I do question if he'll actually re-sign here in the offseason, but mostly because players are often complimentary on their way out but rarely re-sign.

Morrow is widely considered a good prospect, but he would be behind Yager and Pickering (who are the only decent prospects in the Penguins system).
Canes are deep at D so trading from position of strength. Probably means Pesce gets extended and Skjei probably won't if the money doesn't work and Nikishin coming.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yikes</b></div><div>Respectfully- it is very funny you say this, when literally right above there’s a small engage about how having line imbalance is odd. No issues just funny lol.
I personally, don’t have a horse in the NJD race, but you do so there will always be a bias.
It’s not just about being one of the 6 best. It’s about balance.
Ottawa is literally dealing with this exact problem, and it is not working for them despite having 4 very good defenders.
(1RD, Zub - 3LD, Sanderson Chabot Chychrun)
LHughes - LOCKED LD, top pp time probably some PK too maybe I’m guessing? Probably 20+ career TOI for the future
Hamilton - Costs you nearly 10 mil, and he’s good, he will not be playing 18min> a night LOCKED RD
Nemec - legitimately has a case to be the best drafted prospect in the league by some professional accounts, RD LOCKED - will also require special teams time if he is this good
Dougie LHughes Nemec all sharing PP time (FULL)
LH, Nemec probably get PK time for their future careers to bolster their development into cup winning d men.
Now we have Sieg taking 2LD and Marino taking “3rd” RD.
Marino isn’t bad but Probably would cost to trade to no? I’ve seen discourse around him.
Sieg is a solid defensive oriented player (isn’t he having a rough year?, can’t recall).
Both are “technically young” at 26 and locked in with deals.
So yeah he could be your 2LD but that offside and offside is not a perfect situation (we can look at Byram, he’s right there!!) unless he steals jobs which is good but that means a job is lost by someone else.
I’m talking perfect world here; devils wants
LHughes - Honestly, Nemec : elite pairing
Sieg - Hamilton : let hamtilon let loose
LD - RD : DZone oriented
(Marino currently that RD)
My rational here is you do not want Hamilton playing 3rd pair unless Casey is so good you’re trading him but you’re realistically hoping Casey is Hamilton level so that would almost be a step backwards for the Devils. And you do not want Casey to be a 3rd pair guy forever.
My only logic for the Devils is Casey’s value is arguably the highest it will ever be, not everyone is going to play like Nemec does when they step in.
Maybe Casey does… but upgrade your goaltending, upgrading depth somewhere like Defensive D or Defensive Forward or scoring depth, and maybe even another asset with 1 prospect.
Ottawa trades Chabot for Saros
Saros for Casey
Nash gets Chabot
(Literally an example of a framework)
I’m not saying the Devils can’t keep Casey and wait it out… I’m not saying Saros is available; just saying wouldn’t it be smart to explore. I want the Devils to succeed nearly as much as a Devils fan.
Don’t care for seeing a VGK 2-3 peat or another COL cup. Would be nice to see a new winner.</div></div>
I think NJD are believers in Casey. Have taken him off the table before. Have had success drafting from US NTDP. One of our development coaches, Eric Weinrich, has weekly dinners with Casey in Ann Arbor. Just feels like we are developing the player, not the asset.
I also believe he gets miscast often as an offensive dman, when his game is very much a two-way game. People see under 6-foot, skates very well, puts up points, and just assume he doesn’t play defense. But his defense is good…and was deployed primarily as defensive dman on WJC team. And is first on the ice in up-a-goal situations at Michigan.
We could trade him someday, but his value will likely be even higher once he proves up a bit in pro game. We could also play him …on either side. Or we could trade someone else.

It’s fair in a vacuum imo, with all things considered - but Buffalo does not have plenty of LD space to give Byram a role to grow into. (CGY/PHI/VGK) - Hanifin for for Miromanov, 2024 5th (VGK), 2025 1st (VGK), 2025 3rd (VGK)
Conroys streak of questionable trades continues. Trading Hanifin was a prime opportunity for the Flames to recoup some good futures, but they somehow managed to completely blunder the trade of one of the best players on the market. I guess the 1st isn't bad, although at this point it'll probably be 32nd overall and I do like Miromanov, but that just isn't enough. This is down right horrible for Calgary, and to make things worse they settled on this with a divisional rival...
For Vegas, this is a move that propels them even further towards the Cup. The idea of pairing Hanifin with Pietrangelo is terrifying. He's still got so many years of good hockey left in him, and it seems like Vegas will be able to get him re-signed. I already felt bad for any team in the west that has the misfortune of coming across Vegas in the playoffs, and it's even scarier now that they've bolstered their already stacked blue line while also still having room to add another huge asset. It's already game over for the rest of the league, we better hope the Knights don't land Buchnevich or Guentzel. Must be so nice having a front office that is just flat out fantastic.

You can get a fine deal on a great car that needs a little care (let’s say a Mercedes (Byram)),

The Avs had been playing Bo a lot at RHD to start the season and there were some growing pains; it did settle down but it wasn't the best Bo we had. He stated that it took him awhile to get comfortable there but we ended up moving him back to 3rd pair LD for the rest of the season to date. He also has to find a "perfect partner" that will mesh with his playing style otherwise it doesn't work. Eric Johnson was the most successful partner he had and now they are both in Buffalo so hopefully that will help out.
What is in the water by Lake Superior that teams think lefty/righty on defense doesn't matter. 3 of the only teams in the league that have no balance are Buffalo, Toronto, and Ottawa?
