I like Nurse, but I think Oilers messed up both players' development, especially Kailer. I don't think Leafs and Oilers match up well on a deal involving Nylander, since you can best be sure the Leafs are asking for Bouchard back.

They would trade Nylander only if that kind of piece is coming back like Evan Bouchard is.

I think the only way Kapanen gets 4.5 M next year is if he gets offer sheet-ed. If we are going to deal Nylander for a young defenseman, i would try to sign Kap to a 4x4 deal. I would squeeze sparks down his qualifying offer to save a couple hundred grand and trade Brown to be replaced by Moore. This would save a few million and would let us fill out a full 23 man roster.

Im not sure i would love a Nylander for Nurse Yamamoto deal. Id rather target Pesce, or another young RHD. If Yamamoto showed a bit more promise in either the NHL or AHL i would be okay with this deal.

Even at that the cap still doesn't quite work. But I think you thought is good. Nylander to the Oilers might be for fit for the Oilers. Leafs have to get significantly less cap back in a trade as you suggest, which is the reason they need to trade Nylander in the first place. Maybe the Leafs just take Yamahotto and either Bouchard or a first rounder, more for cap reasons.

Did any of you get the feeling that Dubas was very dismissive about the kapanen and Johnsson contracts at the Mathews press conference? He seemed to be underestimating their ask or possibly he has a better understanding of what they will take. But realistically he has never negotiated with either. Johnsson signed his QA.
