Description
Assuming Staal would waive his NTC to go play with his brother. MN might need a little bit more salary retention so they can manage a 23 man roster. Don't get too hung up on the forwards, because that's a mess this trade won't likely solve.

NY fans, what would you give up to have this trade go through?

MN fans, what would you want from NY to take on 2 years of Staal?

It cost Leafs a first rounder to rid themselves for one year of Marleau and his 6.25m cap hit and 3.5m cash payout. Staal might waive but would likely want a NMC and no buyout clause to approve the trade. Minni just might feel that 5.7m can be spend better elsewhere....but they did take Staal, it would costly to the Rangers. A first rounder and more.

I figured Marleau is probably a solid comparison because the Rangers are now in a similar situation to the Leafs after signing Trouba with at least 2 RFAs they'll want to sign, so they're going to have to include something of decent value especially because it's for 2 years. I'm just not familiar enough with their prospects to know who's good and who's someone they might give up.

The only thing with the 1st round pick is I'm not sure team that just picked 2nd is giving up a 1st round pick despite their roster upgrades, maybe if it's lottery protected. NY should almost certainly be better and Columbus will almost certainly be worse, but teams like Philly and NJ improved some also so it'll be interesting to see how NY does this year.

Rangers probably won't be a lottery team next year, they added a ton of upgrades this offseason. They signed Panarin, arguably the best free agent winger to hit the market in quite some time, they drafted Kakko who should be at least a 50p player next year, Kravtsov is coming over, and they traded for a legit top pairing RD with Jacob Trouba. I'd ask for at least a 1st from them and probably another good pick/prospect since Staal has 2 years on his deal. K'Andre miller would be nice, I was hoping we would draft him 2 years ago, but I doubt they would give him up.
