Description
The season for the OHL has wrapped up and Merkley had a great season. He had the most points ever in the OHL and had a great plus minus with 20, the best for him in that statistic by a long shot. A tidbit from Dobber Prospects reads

"Those who questioned his character issues will be happy to hear that London Knights head coach Dale Hunter has been singing Merkley’s praise not only for his on-ice production but for his off-ice leadership as well. Hunter has been quoted saying that Merkley’s humour and attitude in the dressing room are one of the reasons his teammates love him."

Merkley will most likely play in the AHL on the top pair next season and be a great asset on the powerplay.

This is all great, but I then realized Merkley is a RD and Karlsson and Burns are signed for 5+ more seasons. I was just wondering how everything will shake out in the coming years given none of those players belong on the bottom pair. It will also be pretty hard to move Burns and near impossible to move Karlsson. Does that mean Merkley might have to be traded or is there another solution.

If Wilson is smart Burns is going to Seattle in the expansion, so that Merkley can come up

He's probably still got a season or two of development in the AHL before he's a full time NHL player, and probably a full season of him in relatively sheltered minutes in the NHL.

Let's say it's 2.5 seasons before he's so good that you can't possibly justify not having him in the top 4. By then Burns will be 37-38 and has likely already fallen off a cliff, so it won't be an issue anyway.

But what does he give up to make that happen? It'll cost a pretty penny. Also, if I'm not mistaken, players with trade protection must be protected in the expansion draft. Though, now I think about it, it might just be NMC's... not sure.
