So, does this get me fired as a GM? It's attempting to be a mix of be somewhat competitive next year but still build for the future (realistic time frame to be truly competitive is no sooner than 2-3 years).

Sell Reinhart now. I wouldn't pay him what he's going to want to stay in Buffalo. It won't be hard to find someone to ride shotgun with Eichel.

Move Ristolainen for anything. Probably won't happen so it may need to be Montour in that deal in which case there would be some additional cap issues to manage.

Signed Hutton as a one year stop gap with some size and skill and gave Montour 1 year. Both guys can be flipped at the deadline with retention if they're out of it. D does lack a bit of size and grit...but I'd be looking to add that the following year.

Have a ton of cap coming off the books after this year. $20M from just 5 players so resigning Dahlin and Jokiharju won't be an issue. Also gives some future room for moves.

Left $1.5M for cap overages.

Give Ruotsalainen a shot before he leaves for the KHL or Europe as well...

For the three scratches, let the kids play. I Just picked 3 at random. Could be Mittelstadt, Thompson, Borgen, etc. Time to see what some of them can do. Rotate them in. (Johanssen and Perreault can take turns sitting at times).

Colorado gets another top 6 RW (probably the biggest gap in their lineup) to win now and have the cap space to sign him. Buffalo gets a temporary replacement or 3C in Compher with some cost certainty and a potential long-term replacement for Reinhart at RW in Kaut. That 1st is going to be pretty late. Have to give quality to get quality.
