Team Explanation
If Ovechkin doesn't re-sign, what do you do? Panic and sign a big UFA? Or build from within and in the meantime, sell cap space?

I think Ovechkin will stick around, but if not, then cheaply giving cap space to other teams could be a way to get back a little value and re-fill the system after the Panik move.

Moving Samsonov before expansion for a late 1st or something like one. Protecting Vanecek.

You prob won't get 2 2nds and wings own pick for Samsonov after his on and off ice struggles. Maybe oilers 2nd this year and that's it. Wings also know you could lose him for free to Seattle

Probably 2nd is enough after Van pays $1M bonus $3M owed $6m cap hit

Det, Edm, Col, Buf, and SJS each might have an expansion protection slot open at goalie. WSH could trade either Samsonov or Vanecek to any of five teams. But if the return is just a late 2nd, I think they just pick a goalie to protect and lose the other in expansion.

Just a fan, but I suspect WSH has the money budgeted to spend up to the cap, and sees cap space as the more limited resource.

if OV doesn't resign, which is doubtful unless his request is ridiculous and he needs to be shown the door, they should tank and rebuild.
