Description
2019-20: Tampa would've unable to match the offersheet unless they give up a different valuable piece. 8.5M x 7 years compensation is only a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. For Tampa, that's valuable compensation but for Montreal it's still a win. He's a great 2-way forward, and he'd provide Montreal with the option to let Danault, Tatar, and maybe even Armia walk.
2020-21: The second offersheet in Ross Colton would be one of the first low value offersheets at 1.3M x 3 years. He's a great player who could easily play up and down the lineup with skill. He really broke out and showed off his potential in the playoffs, at 1.3M annually he is a steal. Tampa parts with him because they simply lack the cap space, and getting a 3rd for him is fine for them.

Lines are run like so:

This assumes Cirelli accepts though. His qualifying offer on his next deal is $7.2 mil I believe. If Montreal only offered $8.5 mil I don’t think he accepts. Plus he’d prolly take home more in Tampa versus Montreal.

This assumes MTL could foresee he Weber injury a year in advance which is a little off to me.

I wish this happened though, they would've spent the first round pick a little more responsibly...

Just so you know, the compensation for 8.5 x 7 is four 1sts. The 59.5 million is divided by 5 years not 7, which bumps it into the top tier of compensation.

I'm not sure where you're getting the 1st, 2nd, 3rd as compensation because according to the offersheet calculator on this site the AAV range for that return is $6,166,097 - $8,221,463. Unless I'm missing something.

Players have to accept the offer sheet, which in the past Tampa players haven’t done. Point being the main example, ironically with Montreal. I’ve seen reported since he filed for arb, Colton can no longer be offer sheeted as well. Also, because I know it’s brought up a lot, the tax thing isn’t as big as assumed and talked about. When Stone signed in Vegas his agent went to Forbes and said the difference was like 80k/year to if he signed in Ottawa. Smart accounting and how taxes are applied based on where you play, bonuses etc. can make them almost irrelevant. Not saying every player takes those steps, but the loopholes exist to really minimize the impact
