Description
As we saw last offseason Arizona did try to take on contracts that paid lees than their cap hit to save money.

Well the habs have a very nice piece for them in Shea Weber. He still has 31.4 million in cap hit and will likely never cost them a actual dollar as the insurance would cover his salary. Putting him on IR immediately means they dont have to actually spend that money. Even if they somehow have to pay the salary he is only owed 6 million total.

This is doubly important because especially next year if Chycrun is gone by then they could still be roughly 35 million from the floor. That is a lot of cap space to cvoer in a situation that good players probably dont want to go to. This is where the rest of the trade comes in.

Byron- retained at 50 percent brings his cap hit down to 1.7 million. Byron is a competent NHLer and gives them a asset to move next deadline.

Hoffman and Armia- both solid nhlers who have decent enough cap hits on not aggressively long deals that can help them reach the floor.

It is important to note that over the life of all 4 players deals the cap hit is 52.3 million while salary expenditure is 23 million.

Habs get cap flexibility and Arizona gets cap that cost less than 50 cents on the dollar so they spend less actual money

Or Arizona could do what they did last offseason and take on bad contracts along with picks. I would not call Hoffman a solid NHLer at this point in his career. He’s one of the worst 5v5 forwards in the league over the last few years.

Weber to Arizona could work and Byron too as he is a one year player that Arizona could flip again in 2023. But not sure if Zona takes the other two … and they’d probably want a pick added …

With this deal they would still need to spend well over 20 million dollars to just get to the floor if they trade JC between now and then. They also might want to try and trade Ghost now that they have rehabbed his image a bit.

The weber contract to them is a massive asset. Its cap they dont have to spend actual dollars on.

Even with all the trades they made (Ladd OEL stralman Ghost) that was only about 20 million. Trying to get value on 35 million will be more difficult.

They need cap hit next year. We saw last offseason nobody wants to sign there. Jaskin is the only player in the last 2 offseason they have signed to 3+ million aav deal. Nobody who is worth 5 million (or even in that ballpark) will sign there.

I can understand the Weber and Byron being added to Arizona. But Hoffman and Armia....8.9m can spent a whole lot better. They stay with the Habs.

The weber contract is in lieu of a pick. To arizona it is a major asset. its 31.4 million in cap they dont have to spend a penny on. For a team cutting costs everywhere that is huge.

Byron isnt a cap dump. At 1.7 million he is a solid value asset they can move at the deadline.

Arizona is going to need a bunch of cap to even reach the floor after this trade and they have struggled to sign a 3 million dollar player the last 2 offseasons (they gave Jaskin 3+ million and he is barely a nhler)
